Practice Insider: Spring Has Sprung
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS ? Spring practice was not even five minutes old and already Jim Tressel was fielding questions about which young players were standing out to him.

?So far after one practice,? Tressel asked rhetorically with a smile.

?In shorts,? he added.

That?s the nature of spring ball. If it wasn?t for stories like that there wouldn?t be much news to report.

And yet no news is good news in Columbus, where Buckeye football is a 24-7 obsession in a city where spring football is the second biggest season of the year.

The Buckeyes were in shorts and shells (shoulder pads and helmets) Thursday for their first practice of the 2010 calendar year and already a few youngsters were standing out to the boss.

?I saw Corey Brown do a couple things that I?m not sure I noticed in the fall. Kind of a newcomer there at corner, a do-everything guy as a wideout and DB and so forth in high school. He looked a little bit more like a fluid guy that was playing that position,? Tressel said of the redshirt freshman from Gateway Pennsylvania.

?I saw Chris Fields do some things. I think he?s been steadily coming along, but its different reading it off a card than understanding the concepts of ours. Zach Boren caught the ball pretty well on the perimeter drill. Lineman wise it?s impossible to tell with just helmets on, but John Simons got a lot of quickness.?

Coach Tressel wasn?t the only one taking mental (or actual) notes during the first spring practice. Here are my thoughts from what I saw at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center Thursday:

Ohio State football notes: OSU is working on defensive line depth (with Cameron Heyward video)

COLUMBUS — Ohio State co-defensive coordinator Jim Heacock doesn't need a few good men.

More specifically, he needs eight of them.

With the departure of three starters from last year's starting front four, Heacock and the OSU staff will be taking a good look at who will step into the spots vacated by the departure of tackles Todd Denlinger and Doug Worthington, as well as end Thaddeus Gibson.

"We've got a lot of young guys, but depth is going to be critical," said Heacock after the Buckeyes' first spring practice on Thursday. "We've got a good young group with a great attitude. We've just got to find who our top eight are."

The Ohio State defensive scheme calls for a deep rotation of defensive linemen to keep a fresh batch of bodies in the trenches to both stop the run and put pressure on the passer in throwing situations.

The return of Cameron Heyward, a 6-foot-5, 288-pound combo end-tackle who would have likely been a first-round pick in this month's NFL draft, is paramount. A healthy Dexter Laramore (6-2, 310) at defensive tackle will be a plus for the Buckeyes this fall, and the emergence of John Simon, who opened many eyes as a 6-2, 270 true freshman last season, is also expected.

"Those younger guys are really going to have to step up," said Laramore. "They've got big shoes to fill. But after looking at them and what they've been doing in the weight room, I think they'll be able to step it up."

Ohio State football: All is well with the Buckeyes (with video)

COLUMBUS — A bright sun cast down on the face of Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel on Thursday afternoon after the Buckeyes had finished their first spring practice at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

Clad in a short-sleeve shirt and shorts, Tressel glanced up at the cloudless sky as if he couldn't believe a 70-degree day had been afforded him.

"I've never been around a bad spring (practice)," Tressel said.

Ohio State spring depth chart

After watching the first day of Ohio State spring practice, and listening to comments from players and coaches afterward, here's a rough depth chart for the Buckeyes.

OFFENSE

QB: Terrelle Pryor, Joe Bauserman/Kenny Guiton

RB: Brandon Saine/Dan Herron, Jordan Hall/Jaamal Berry

FB: Zach Boren, Adam Homan

LT: Mike Adams, Andy Miller

LG: Justin Boren, Connor Smith

C: Mike Brewster, Jack Mewhort

RG: Bryant Browning, Corey Linsley

RT: J.B. Shugarts, Marcus Hall

TE: Jake Stoneburner, Reid Fragel

WR: DeVier Posey, Grant Schwartz

WR: Dane Sanzenbacher, Chris Fields

WR: Taurian Washington, James Jackson

DEFENSE

DE: Cameron Heyward, Keith Wells

DT: John Simon, Adam Bellamy

DT: Dexter Larimore, Garrett Goebel

DE: Nathan Williams/Solomon Thomas

SLB: Etienne Sabino, Tony Jackson

MLB: Brian Rolle, Storm Klein

WLB: Ross Homan, Andrew Sweat*

CB: Chimdi Chekwa, Travis Howard

CB: Devon Torrence, Corey Brown/Dominic Clarke/Donnie Evege

S: Jermale Hines, Tyler Moeller**

S: Orhian Johnson, C.J. Barnett

* Sweat injured, not fully participating in practice, but likely No. 4 overall linebacker at this point.

** Moeller not taking part in contact drills this spring while recovering from a head injury, but lined up as a second-team safety in some drills. Could become primary nickel back in the fall.

The one name that surprised me on the projected depth chart was Schwartz in the 2-deep behind Posey. Any details from those of you who've been following more closely?

With Small, Thomas, and Carter not participating plus no true frosh enrolling early plus it being a spring depth chart(a time the upperclassmen and walk-ons get their names on it), it's not really unexpected. They listed 6 receivers too so he's probably still in that 5th or 6th spot.

Practice No. 2: Left tackle intrigue

Another day in the sun for OSU today, again in shorts and helmets. The pads go on tomorrow, but that session is not open to the media. The next open practice is not until Thursday.

The most interesting thing today was not that Andrew Miller was working at first-team left tackle. We already figured that he would rotate some with Mike Adams.

The fun came when offensive line coach Jim Bollman was asked about the spot, and he immediately volunteered that four players would be rotating in and out of left tackle this spring: Adams, Miller, J.B. Shugarts and Marcus Hall. The latter two played strictly on the right side last year.

I asked if the phrase "wide open" was too strong to use when talking about left tackle and Bollman said, no, wide open was probably fair to say. He went on to make it clear he would play the best player at the spot, period, pointing out that he's had walk-ons play for him before, which I took to mean that a highly hyped player (such as Adams) does not have a built-in advantage, at least not any more.

I'll have more on that in the paper tomorrow.

What? What about all the fine fillies in St. Paris?

Feel free to join 'Bus and the rest of us SoCal folks some time.

How could I forget  But yesterday was no exception, I would make sure the recruits get to swing through the oval if they come on early. But I would love to have a BP shindig, I will definitely be ready to go for the spring game.

Loosely related to football, but The Oval was rockin today. Hopefully we have weather like this for the spring game...I've never seen so many attractive females in one spot (sunbathing at that). Life at OSU = the best.

Every day I walk through there and think, how can an 18 year old male come on a college visit, walk through this, and NOT want to come here?
