There are 28 total points. Every match has the possibility of being halved.

These odds all came from my warped brain.

My favorite golf event. It will interesting to see how the long bombers of the rather young United States team does on a European type course. The European team definitely has a big advantage especially if Woods plays poorly.

Pairings out:

Dustin Johnson & Phil Mickelson together? I can't ignore a Dusty & Lefty pairing.

woods-stricker-093010-480x288_1.jpg

Steve Stricker and Tiger Woods will pair off against Englishmen Ian Poulter and Ross Fisher on Friday morning.

Nice uniforms, scarlet sweatervests and gray pants; however, to bad the shirts/hats aren't gray too.

Not a good start:

1. Rain delay: The opening matches in the Ryder Cup have been suspended because of heavy rains at Celtic Manor.

2. US rainsuits not repelling water: The Americans will come back to the course with new rain suits. Several players complained that the rain suits they had been wearing -- which featured their names on the back -- were not repelling water.

3. US trailing in 3 of 4 matches: Playing in a driving rain from the start, the Europeans opened quickly, leading in three of the four best-ball matches.

a. Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer are 2 up against Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson through five holes.

b. Holding 1-up leads are Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell, who lead Stewart Cink and Matt Kuchar through four holes,

c. along with Ian Poulter and Ross Fisher, who lead Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker through three holes.

d. The only U.S. leaders are Ryder Cup rookies Bubba Watson and Jeff Overton, who birdied the first two holes to lead Luke Donald and Padraig Harrington. Their match is through two holes.

From the article linked in the above post

Finishing the matches on Sunday as scheduled is unlikely because of the delay. If play continues into Monday, it has to be completed by 6:43 p.m. local time (which is sunset). Whoever leads in completed matches at that time would win the Ryder Cup; any matches remaining on the course would be considered halved.
I guess I don't understand why they would have to finish on Monday and halve matches not finished. I would think such an historical event could be played into Tuesday.

they used to play the cup in the heat of the final push on the pga tour. it is just recently that they pushed it back into october. making guys stay somewhere until tuesday would really hamper their opportunities to get to the next tour stop and get in their practice rounds.

I could be wrong but I would like to know how many of these guys are really going to play in a regular tour stop next weekend. Many of these guys take the next weekend off after a major event and the Ryder Cup is right there if not above the major tournaments.

Kaymer and McDowell are booked to play next weekend in England. Zach Johnson is playing in Georgia. That isn't really what I was getting at though. That rule was written back when the PGA was still in its final push to the tour championship at the time of the cup. Also don't forget that these guys don't get paid to play. Asking them to stay and play for free when they need to be getting ready for an event is a bit of a stretch.

Almost put this in the FAIL thread...

from Sun Mountain's facebook page a few days ago

"Check out this photo from a Ryder Cup practice round. That?s a fine looking USA jacket. Weather will most likely be a factor at this year?s event. May the team with the best outerwear win."

This has to be a PR nightmare for them! The USA team had to send someone into the souvenier tent during the rain delay to buy them new raingear because their Sun Mountain gear was not repelling water, it was actually retaining it.

The USA played better after the 7 hr 15 min rain delay (Phil had 3 straight birdies after sucking earlier), and they now have a lead in 2 matches, trail in 1, and have 1 match all square. Stewart Cink has rolled in 3 long bombs to give his match a lead.

They're changing the format to try to finish on Sunday. After finishing the first set of 4 matches (they've played bwtween 9 and 12 holes right now), they'll have 6 teams play foursome matches. After that, the third session will be 2 foursomes and 4 fourballs.

All 12 singles matches would complete the 28 points on Monday.

I am beginning to not like Poulter . Makes the last putt of the day to tie Woods/Stricker and he acts like he just won for Ryder Cup for his team:tongue2:

There are very to be some very tired golfers at the end of tomorrow and it seems like this has almost become a test of endurance rather than golf. We shall see.

Indeed. 36 hole days are a bear, throw in rain delays and it gets very taxing mentally and physically. I have always found it very hard to get mentally into a competitive round of golf, then pause in the middle for a rain delay, and get yourself back into the same frame of mind you were in previously.

USA......USA......USA......

The Americans hold a 2 1/2 - 1 1/2 lead after the morning four-balls, which finished nearly 24 hours behind schedule because of Friday's torrential rains at Celtic Manor.

1. Overton and Watson -- but mainly Overton -- provided the first full point for the Americans with a 3-and-2 win over the heavily favored team of Luke Donald and Padraig Harrington.

2. Tiger Woods also won -- with a big hand from Steve Stricker, whose brilliant touch with a wedge at No. 18 clinched another U.S. point and kept them unbeaten as partners.

3. The powerhouse duo of Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson was beaten 3-and-2 by Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer in the leadoff match.

4. The Northern Irish team of Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy roared back from two holes down with six to play, halving the match with Americans Stewart Cink and Matt Kuchar.
