Game Thread 2010 Rose Bowl: Ohio State 26 Oregon 17 (Final, 1/01/2010)

Congrats on barely beating Purdue. Our defense allowed 26 points after 5 turnovers by our offense. And, uhh, Purdue put up 36 on Oregon's D.

btw, :ban:.

I'm not here to troll, just to discuss. You do have to realize that Oregon has played a tougher schedule than Ohio State. Oregon's SOS is 11, where as Ohio State's is 50. That's not saying that Ohio State is a bad team, just that they have had an easier time getting to 10-2 than Oregon has.

Which is all about alleged powerhouse Boise, which is going to be a tough sell around these parts. Unfortunately, they will again face a flawed opponent in the BCS. Maybe they'll win their 2nd bowl game in 6 years.

I wouldn't say it's all about Boise State but that is a very good point. Oregon has beaten 8 teams that are playing in bowl games this season.

tOSU has beaten 5 that are heading to bowl games.
Oregon has beaten 6 heading to bowls.

tOSU- Navy, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Penn. State, and Iowa

Oregon- Utah, California, UCLA, USC, Arizona, and Oregon State (Oregon lost to Boise and Stanford)

tMATH- ( Amount of points over teams beaten that are playing in bowl games **-averaged together-**)

Ohio State - 14.6
Oregon - 15.6

Very, very close, both have played their fare share of big teams.
Which ones were more formidable opponents can only be opinion.

Uh, wrong. You've beaten six team going to bowls:

Utah (San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia)
California (San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia)
UCLA (EagleBank)
USC (Emerald)
Arizona (Pacific Life Holiday)
Oregon State (MAACO Las Vegas)

The other four teams you beat (Purdue, Washington State, Washington, and Arizona State) aren't going to bowls. And none of the teams you beat are playing after Dec 30th.

We beat five teams going to bowls, but at least we beat two teams playing in January bowls (bolded):

Navy (Texas)
Wisconsin (Champs Sports)
Minnesota (Insight)
Penn State (Capital One)
Iowa (FedEx Orange)

A 6-6 team can make a bowl game... Congrats.

Thanks. The schedules don't lie. Oregon has played and beaten tougher teams this year.

It is going to be interesting to see the overrated Ohio State defense finally be put to the test. Ohio State has played 4 teams with an offense ranked in the top 50. They are Toledo, Illinois (at #50), Penn State and Wisconsin.

Oregon has played 7 top 50 defenses and 4 in the top 21. Against those 4 teams in the top 21 they had an average of 363 ypg and 32.75 ppg.

I just have a hard time seeing Ohio State's 71st ranked offense keep up with the points Oregon is going to put on the board. That 71st ranked offense is against just 4 teams with a defense ranked 40 or better.

I know it's all apples and oranges and we really won't know anything until the end of the game but if you look at the numbers I am surprised Ohio State isn't a bigger dog than just 2 points.

You are right. I stand corrected. I just really can't wait for this game. Even if I wasn't an Oregon alumni I think this looks like the best game of the bowl season. It will be a lot of fun to see how the read option works against such a highly regarded defense.

I guess we can't take you at your word.

Two strikes and your out on this site. Consider this your warning, particularly since you didn't bother to back up this cute little shot.

It certainly casts a different light on lines like this:

"That's not saying that Ohio State is a bad team,"
"highly regarded defense"

Well you've convinced me that we suck. Clearly our weaknesses are the ones that matter, not yours on defense.

OSU is a very good rushing team, and Oregon has an aggressive but undersized defense. It's not hard to imagine OSU controlling the line of scrimmage and turning in a big day on the ground. Oregon has an excellent offense, and OSU has an excellent defense. What level of 'excellent' is up for debate, but the notion that either is overhyped doesn't fly imo. If one handles the other, it's an accomplishment in a great challenge, not evidence of how the opposition was exposed.

It's no secret that Oregon has one of the worst pass defenses in the entire country. It is a HUGE liability against a team willing to go to the air. It will be interesting to see if Tressel changes his game plan a little. I know how much he loves to run, run, run.

Agree to disagree I guess... Think what you want but you're making this sound like Oregon can't be stopped.. Because they played a "tougher" schedule. We'll see.
