Great first day for the Lady Bucks! The 10k ladies went 5,6,9 last night to pick up 7 points. Katie Williams finished 5th in 34:48, Sarah Foster was 6th in 34:53 and Sarah Lowe was 9th in 35:13. I believe all of these times are PRs, and Williams and Foster times were both under the old provisional standard, and Lowe's just a bit over, to put things in perspective.

OSU sits in second place with 15 points, behind first place Minnesota who has 33.

The Buckeyes held on to 2nd place after the 10K after a good showing by their distance runners. They grabbed 7 points by Katie Williams and Sarah Foster finishing 5th and 6th to minimize the damage done by the Minnesota distance runners (they finished 1-2-4). I was kind of surprised to see that Angela Bizzarri from Illinois didn't run the 10K as she probably could have taken the title... she must be going after the 5K record on Sunday.

The Buckeyes finish day 1 with 15 points, 18 behind leader Minnesota and 5 ahead of host Indiana. Women's finals today include the heptathlon, shot put, long jump, javelin, and steeplechase along with the prelims of all the sprints, relays, and mid-distance events (800, 1500).

Yep. They aren't very strong in the field events, which is the only events (besides the 10K and heptathlon) scored up to this point. Once the running finals start Penn State will start accumulating their points.

Day 2 at the Big10 Championships

Heptathlon - Ashley Galbraith, 5th place
Long Jump - Kelcey McKinney, 5th place (5.98m, 19'7.5")
Javelin - Maggie Mullen - 1st place (50.65m, 166'2")

The women have multiple qualifiers in most of the sprints for tomorrows finals but are hurting in the distance events... no qualifiers in the 800 nor the 1500.

The Bucks team performance rides largely on the shoulders of Christina Manning, as she will look to score big in the 100, 200, and 100H with 26 points being definite possibility.

The women's 4x1 ran a season's best in the prelims.

Big congrats to Maggie Mullen for winning the javelin title.

Day 3: Ohio State Finishes Sixth at Big Ten Outdoor Championships - The Ohio State Buckeyes Official Athletics Site - OhioStateBuckeyes.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women's track and field team finished in sixth-place Sunday at the 2010 Big Ten Outdoor Championships in Bloomington, Ind.

With a total of 79 points, the Buckeyes made a two spot improvement from their finish at last year's conference meet. Penn State won its third-straight conference championship (133.50 pts.) thanks in large part to individual titles in seven of the 10 track events on the day. Minnesota, the leader over the first two days of the championships, settled for second with a score of 123.

Ohio State's defending outdoor champion 4x400m relay team eclipsed the previous track record at Indiana, but was unable to duplicate its win from last season. Penn State, with a time of 3:35.18, captured the conference crown just ahead of Buckeyes Latoya Sanderson, Nyjah Cousar, Ashley Caldwell and Shaniqua McGinnis, who crossed the finish line in 3:35.61. Both times stand among the 25 best in Division I this season.

McGinnis and Penn State All-American Fawn Dorr battled for the conference title in the 400m dash once again, with Dorr taking the win in a personal record time of 52.51, sixth-best in Division I. McGinnis turned in an equally impressive performance for the Buckeyes, finishing second in a season-best time of 52.84, fifth-best in Ohio State outdoor history and a Top 15 run nationally. Sanderson finished sixth for the Buckeyes in 54.57.

Sophomore Kelcey McKinney followed up her fifth-place finish in the long jump Saturday with a fourth-place and personal record effort of 12.47m (40-11) in the finals of the triple jump. Purdue's Nkeiru Ugwoaba won the conference title at 12.95m (42-6), a Top 25 DI performance.

The Buckeye 4x100m relay team of McGinnis, Letecia Wright, Christienne Linton and Christina Manning finished third in a season-best time of 44.91. Penn State was the first-place finisher in 44.62, with Illinois taking second in 44.89.

Manning was unable to overtake Penn State All-American Shavon Greaves in the 100m dash title, as the Waldorf, Md., product finished third in 11.77. Greaves won yet another conference title in a time of 11.56, while Wright took seventh for Ohio State (11.98).

Wright and Manning were unable to duplicate their 1-2 preliminary finish in the 100m hurdle championship run. Wright settled for a third-place finish in 13.42, while Manning failed to finish the race. Aleesha Barber of Penn State took advantage of the duo's struggles to take the Big Ten title in 13.11.

Sophomore Ashley Galbraith - a day removed from a fifth-place finish in the heptathlon - claimed seventh in the high jump with a season-best mark of 1.77m (5-9.75). Michigan State's Rebecca Buchholtz won the event title at 1.80m (5-10.75).

Not a bad meet for the women. Things didn't go as they had hoped, but these things happen. The good news is that the program still appears to be on the right path. I'm not sure what happened to Manning. She DNFd in the 100 hurdles, where I assume she must have hit a hurdle and fallen. She came back to take 3rd in the 100, but then didn't run the 200 final. She easily could have been second in the both the 100 hurdles and 200 (and certainly could have won the 100 hurdles), and those 15 points would have put OSU in 4th.

Wright also had a bad race in the 100 hurldes - I wonder if Manning's DNF had anything to do with that (i.e. perhaps Manning hit a hurdle hard and that messed up Wright's hurdle).

McGinnis again ran her best race of the season at conference. She lost to Fawn this time, but still a great run.

4x1 with a season's best to just miss second was nice. The 4x4 also ran very well to just miss the win.

McKinney had a great weekend, performing very well in the both the long and triple jumps.

Ashley Galbreith also looked good, taking 5th in the hep and then jumping to a PR in the high jump.

The team still has a lot of holes (distance and throws need to improve, no vaulter, added depth to the jumps) but the girls the team has did well, and the team is definitely looking good for next year, as virtually everyone returns, and the staff has put together a very nice recruiting class.

Props to the women's team:bow: I thought that they would finish a little higher since they did finish second in the indoor championship ball with one of their stars having a bad day I guess it costs them a few spots.

26 Buckeyes Set to Run at NCAA East Regional Preliminaries Next Weekend - The Ohio State Buckeyes Official Athletics Site - OhioStateBuckeyes.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Twenty-six Ohio State track and field athletes - 13 men and 13 women - will represent the Scarlet and Gray next weekend at the 2010 NCAA East Regional Preliminaries in Greensboro, N.C.
North Carolina A&T will play host to the top teams east of the Mississippi River May 27-29. Athletes from Big Ten, ACC, SEC and Big East universities will all be in action at Aggie Stadium, hoping to secure a spot in the NCAA championship field.

A breakdown of the Buckeyes set to compete next weekend in Greensboro:

Manning, Wright and McGinnis are the most experienced Buckeyes at the national level. Manning captured the first All-American honor of her career after a seventh-place finish in the 60m hurdles at this year's indoor championships. Wright is a two-time participant at the national finals, having finished 12th in the 60m hurdles this past March and 16th in the 100m hurdles at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships. McGinnis placed 13th in the 400m dash at the indoor championships two months ago and was the anchor of Ohio State's 11th-place 4x400m relay team at last June's outdoor finals.

NCAA Eastern Preliminaries Day 1

Mullen Finishes Second in the Javelin at East Preliminaries, Qualifies for NCAA Championships - The Ohio State Buckeyes Official Athletics Site - OhioStateBuckeyes.com

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Maggie Mullen will represent the Ohio State women's track and field team at the NCAA championships next month after her runner-up finish in the javelin throw Thursday at the 2010 NCAA East Regional Preliminaries.

Mullen secured her first national championship birth thanks to an impressive 50.44m (165-6) throw. Florida senior Evelien Dekkers squeaked past the Buckeye sophomore with a mark of 50.48m (165-7) to capture the regional title - the Top 12 finishers advanced on to the NCAA finals in Eugene, Ore., June 9.

Latoya Sanderson posted a personal record time of 53.99 to qualify for Friday's semifinals, good for third in her heat and 16th overall. Shaniqua McGinnis ran a time of 54.54 to take 28th overall, placing her just short of the cut off line. Auburn's Joanna Atkins holds the best time (51.87) headed into the semifinal race, where the Top 12 runners will move on to Eugene.

Sarah Foster just missed qualifying for the 10000m national championships, finishing 16th overall in 35:53.22. Clara Grandt of West Virginia won the race in 34:29.86, as the Top 12 moved on to Eugene. Katie Williams closed out her Buckeye career with a 24th-place finish (36:16.89), while sophomore Sarah Lowe took 39th overall (36:57.80).

All-American Christina Manning failed to qualify for the 100m dash semifinals, taking 26th overall with a time of 11.65. Florida State's Marcecia Pemberton ran the second-fastest Division I time this season (11.12) to lead the field.

Just like the men, kind of a mixed bag for the Lady Bucks.

The Good: Clearly, Maggie Mullen leads the way here. Another very strong performance by her. She will be strong candidate for an All-American finish, as only 6 others had a better throw out West. Latoya Sanderson dropping a nice PR to get under 54 and move onto the semis. She has a legit shot at moving on to Nats with another strong performance, though it will probably take a PR. Ashely Galbreith, although she did not advance, jumped very well in the HJ.

The OK: Sarah Foster ran ok in the 10k. Time isn't too important here, as the race was surely tactical. But it would have been nice to see her be a bit closer to a Nat birth, as she was 28 seconds off 12th place. The good thing I suppose is the state of OSU women's distance generally, as a I am to the point of being disappointed that a 10k girl didn't get to Nats, where just a few years ago I would have been thrilled with this performance. Manning ran decent in the 100. It's not really her main event, and she was just off her best. She was only .04 off of making the semis, but had little chance of going to Nats. The hurdles are where its at for her.

The Bad: Have to start with McGinnis. Running a mid 54 and not advancing for a 52 second 400 runner is very disappointing. Hopefully she can bounce back well in the relays. Katie Williams run in the 10k also wasn't very good. Definitely had hoped for her to on the cusp of qualifying. And Sarah Lowe, although she didn't have a shot of moving on, also didn't run very well.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Letecia Wright and Christina Manning will represent the Ohio State women's track and field team at the NCAA outdoor championships after finishing in the Top 12 of the 100m hurdle semifinals Saturday evening at the 2010 NCAA East Regional Preliminaries.

Wright finished eighth overall - third in her heat - in a personal record time of 13.05, the fourth-best run in Ohio State outdoor history. All-American Manning was fourth behind her Maryland counterpart and 11th overall in 13.20 seconds, just fast enough to move on to next month's championships. Queen Quedith Harrison of Virginia Tech was the regional champ in a time of 12.69.

Manning and Wright join Maggie Mullen as the three Buckeye qualifiers for 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships, June 9-12 in Eugene, Ore.

Wrapping up the rest of the meet for the Buckeyes:

OSU's 4x100m relay team of Wright, Manning, Christienne Linton and Shaniqua McGinnis finished 15th overall in 45.26. Auburn won the East regional title in 43.48.
Latoya Sanderson, Nyjah Cousar, Ashley Caldwell and McGinnis ended the 2010 campaign with an 11th-place finish - fifth in their heat - in a time of 3:37.02. LSU recorded the best Division I time this season to take first-place in 3:31.01.
Kelcey McKinney's first trip to the regional prelims ended with a 23rd-place finish in the triple jump at 12.45m (40-10.25). Florida State's Kimberly Williams took first at 14.03m (46-0.25), the top Division I mark this season.

Pretty solid weekend from the ladies. Would have liked to have seen McGinnis and the 4x4 move on, but such in life, though the 4x4 not running that well and only missing advancing by .05 seconds hurts. Great run from Leticia Wright. Think there is a great shot that Mullen and at least one, if not both of the hurdle girls pick up AA honors in two weeks.

Buckeye results from Day 2 of the National Championships:

Letecia Wright finished 5th in her 100m hurdle heat with a time of 13.20 and 12th overall... top 8 made the finals. If she ran her Regional time she would have qualified for the finals.

Christina Manning finished 7th in her 100m hurdle heat with a time of 13.43 and 20th overall. Even if she ran the same time she did in Regionals she would not have qualified for the finals.

Maggie Mullen is the last Lady Buckeye to compete at Nationals... she will be throwing on Saturday.
