For me, this might be the most exciting thread I've ever started. First off, the OSURFC opens play this weekend at the University of Louisville.

The biggest news is the announcement that The Greater Columbus Sports Commission, The Ohio State University Rugby Football Club and USA Sevens LLC are proud to announce that on June 5th and 6th of this year, there will be a Collegiate Invitational Sevens Championship to be held at Crew Stadium. USA Sevens will once again be partnering with NBC to televise portions of the tournament. The Ohio State University will be one of the 16 teams represented at the tournament. The field will also include the likes of Cal-Berkeley, Tennessee, Dartmouth, Notre Dame, Army, Penn State and Utah. This is especially exciting for us as this should coincide with both our alumni weekend and the launch of our new website. I wil be publishing further details as they become available.

This is also an exciting time as college rugby is looking to govern itself independent of USA Rugby via the newly formed USA College Rugby Association.

Was fortunate enough to workout with the ATC/PT from Ulster Rugby of the Magners League and Heineken Cup this morning...he attended our regular 7AM lifting session.

NBC has agreed to broadcast the first Rugby Sevens collegiate championship June 5-6, marking what NBC believes is the first time college rugby games have appeared on broadcast television.

The round-robin tournament will be held at Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, and feature 16 teams.

NBC will broadcast the games in the 2:00-4:30pm ET time slot on Saturday and 4:30-6:00pm ET Sunday.

"Rugby Sevens is an exciting, fast-paced sport that is growing in global popularity, participation and interest," says NBC Sports Senior VP/Programming Jon Miller.

"USA Sevens is the ideal partner for this event, which features the best collegiate rugby teams in the country."

Rugby Sevens will make its Olympic debut at the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro.

That's outstanding, Wade. Hopefully, it will go a long way to making Ohio State a center of collegiate rugby in the Midwest/Great Lakes.

Love to see Theee Ohio State University kick some Cal Golden Bear ass in the finals. Bastards stole our drinking song after hearing the band play it at the 1950 Rose Bowl.

This Saturday the OSURFC faces a new varsity program...Davenport University from Michigan. They are 10-0 since their inception last fall. The game will be played at the turf facility in between The Shoe and the towers (Lincoln and Morrill) at 6PM on Saturday evening.

Ruggers Suffer 1st Loss as Ohio State Wins 30-17
Panthers outscored 22-3 in first half

March 13, 2010

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Davenport beefed up its schedule for the spring and a poor first half led to the first loss in school history as Ohio State defeated the Panthers 30-17. DU will look to rebound at Bowling Green next weekend.

The host Buckeyes scored early to make it 7-0 but DU came right back with a penalty goal to get within 7-3. Ohio State then scored the next 15 points to close out the first half and took a commanding 22-3 into the locker room.

DU came out with much more focus and aggression in the second half and after falling behind 25-3, the Panthers scored 14 straight points to get within eight at 25-17.

That would be the final scoring for the Panthers though as the Buckeyes tacked on one more try for the final outcome of 30-17.

DU will travel back to Ohio to take on Bowling Green next Saturday.

When I saw this was their first loss in "school history", I figured they haven't been playing rugby for more than a year or so and that the statement was a bit hyperbolic, and decided to check the link to their 2009-2010 schedule. Holy shit, they've fucking killed some teams:

Wayne State 100-0 (Sep 5, 2009)
Oakland (MI) 78-0 (Sep 19, 2009)
Ferris State 87-7 (Oct 10, 2009)
Saginaw Valley State 75-5 (Oct 17, 2009)
UM-Dearborn 83-3 (Oct 24, 2009)

I'd never even heard of Davenport University until now, but for a "no name" university they seem to have a helluva rugby squad...
