Looks like the Herbie Ohio vs. USA series has been re-vamped without Ohio. I know he's been struggling to keep it afloat the last couple of years. I wonder if Spielman will start looking at out of state teams for his series?

The most well-known event for intriguing intrastate matchups, the Kirk Herbstreit Varsity Football Series looks to be strong once again in 2010. Here?s the tentative lineup for games to be played at Cowboys Stadium on Labor Day:

Shiloh Christian (Springdale, Ark.) vs. Trinity (Euless, Texas)
De Soto (De Soto, Texas) vs. Bowie (Arlington, Texas)
Guyer (Denton, Texas) vs. Cedar Hill (Cedar Hill, Texas)
Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) vs. Skyline (Dallas, Texas)

While the two Lone Star State games are outstanding matchups, it?s the two out of state matchups are are particularly intriguing.

It's a shame to see it leave Ohio I felt like we were pretty competitive against some of the top competitors when we put the right teams out there.

But if it ever comes back I think they need to bring it back in a much smaller format...I think expanding it to that many games and venues was a recipe for disaster. I'd love to see our State champs earn the right to play in it the next year, promote one team for Ohio to cheer for, and watch us beat the best.

Looks to me that the Ohio games will still be played; they just haven't been announced yet:
"At this point, fewer details have emerged about the Herbstreit Varsity Football Series games to be played in Columbus, Ohio. However, reports indicate that Dwyer (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) has been invited and may make the trip.
St. Ignatius (Cleveland, Ohio) will not take part in the event. The Wildcats, one of the states premier programs, have never played in a Herbstreit Varsity Football Series game."

Glenville High School will meet Florida football power
By Starting Blocks
February 26, 2010, 11:13AM

Glenville High School will participate in the Kirk Herbstreit Football Series on Sept. 6 at Ohio State University against Florida power Dwyer High School.

The Dwyer Panthers, from Palm Beach, Fla., went 14-1 last year while winning its first state championship in program history. Glenville went 13-1 and lost the state championship.

On The Palm Beach Post Game Time blog:

The game will be especially meaningful for local golf legend Jack Nicklaus, who graduated from Ohio State. Nicklaus will get to watch his grandson, Dwyer tight end Nick O?Leary, play at Ohio Stadium.

A spokesperson for the Herbstreit Football Series said match-ups have not been finalized, but there will be four games in Columbus televised by ESPN or ESPNU.

According to this article on rivals, Glenville is playing Aquinas and Warren Central (IN)...any idea which one of these will be for the Herbstreit Classic, or will that still be Dwyer? All of those plus Iggy will be a brutal schedule, but Glenville should be at their best.

What's with Herby giving Cincy no love? Our squads would give any of those teams hell. Are Elder, St. X, Moeller and Colerain not high profile enough? I guess the talking will need to be done on the field

Calm down.

Maybe those schools didn't want to participate this year.

Maybe Herbstreit wanted to get some new schools involved.

Maybe the Cincinnati schools are so high profile already that they don't need Herbsteit's event to promote them.

Maybe Herbstreit wanted to create some balance and interest around the state after playing a majority of the games in 2006, 2007, and 2008 in Paul Brown and Nippert stadium with primarily Cincinnati based programs.

It will be alright.

Wayne to play in Herbstreit Series at Ohio Stadium

By Kyle Nagel | Tuesday, April 27, 2010, 02:14 PM

The Wayne High School football team will be one of eight to play in the Ohio portion of the Kirk Herbstreit Varsity Football Series at Ohio Stadium during Labor Day weekend.

The Warriors moved their scheduled game against Canton McKinley to the Herbstreit Series and will play at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 5. That will follow Dublin Coffman's game against Westerville South in the doubleheader, and both games will be broadcast on ESPNU.

Two more games will be played on Monday, Sept. 6, in the four-game event.

It will be Wayne's second consecutive game to open the season broadcast on an ESPN platform. Wayne coach and athletic director Jay Minton said the Warriors will open their season on Sunday, Aug. 29, against Moeller as part of a doubleheader at St. Xavier High School in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown. Broadcast information for that game will be determined later, Minton said.
