2010 Florida Gators Baseball

No. 6 Baseball Defeats Army, 9-3 - GatorZone.com

Gainesville, Fla. - Monday March 15, 2010

Sophomore Anthony DeSclafani (Freehold, N.J.)(2-1) hurled a season-
high 5.2 innings to earn his second-straight victory as No. 6 Florida (12-3)
downed Army (5-4), 9-3, on Monday at McKethan Stadium. Sophomore
Preston Tucker (Tampa, Fla.) drove in three runs, highlighted by his first
homer of the year, and freshman Austin Maddox (Jacksonville, Fla.) was
2-for-5 and collected two RBI for the Gators. Senior Jeff Barfield (Perry,Ga.)
allowed one run over the final 3.1 innings to notch his second save.

?We haven?t had back-to-back losses this season and it is nice to get back
in the win column,? head coach Kevin O?Sullivan said. ?We took the lead
early and I think scoring in the first inning did a lot for our confidence and
got us back going again offensively.?

Senior Matt den Dekker (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) opened the scoring for Florida
with a leadoff homer in the first inning off junior Kirk Porter (0-2). His
second homer of the season cleared the wall in right center was the first by
a Gator to start a game since Avery Barnes went deep against South
Carolina on April 25, 2009.

The Gators return to action tomorrow night against No. 5 Florida State
(13-2) at McKethan Stadium. In a meeting of freshmen right-handers,
Hudson Randall (Atlanta, Ga.) (2-0, 2.51) will oppose Seminole Robert
Benincasa (1-0, 1.64). The game will begin at 6:30 p.m. and air live on FOX
Sports Florida in North/Central Florida. It will also be shown on DirecTV
Channel 655 and DISH Network Channel 447. The Seminoles claimed the
first of the four regular-season meetings with the squads, 10-5, at the
inaugural Florida Four Tourney in Tampa on March 2.

if this week's midweek tilt against Florida Gulf Coast is any indicator, UF will be drawing a higher # of fans this year than last. 3400 for a midweek game against anyone not named FSU is great for Florida. Also drew 4800 for the Saturday game against MSU, also not really a "rival."

Yeah I know it's not what LSU or others draw, but the gap won't be quite so large this year. Losing some games to weather early in the year might skew the numbers, but the average will certainly be higher.

I really don't see UF being a strong pick to win it all as another poster said. I'm a huge fan, but there are two reason why I don't think we will be able to pull it off.

First, the recent injury to Tommy Toledo. He was hit in the face by a line drive and had a 9 hour surgery a few days ago to start the recovery process. Speculation is that, health wise, he should be ready to go again near the end of the regular season, but there are so many other considerations and factors that are working against him. He's got to not be afradi of going back out there and pitching, for one. Depending on the kid's mental makeup, that may not be that easy to do.
On top of that, he won't have pitched for probably 6-8 weeks - that's not normally an easy thing to do. His arm could be "fresh" but he's also going to have a stretch where he's not throwing at all, so he'll have to get back into shape in that regard. I do think there are some good young arms that could step up, we certainly have the numbers, but there's also a lot of inexperience on the staff, so it's hard to say how it's going to turn out. Toledo was really looking good, and with him and Pantaliodis being a formidable 1-2 punch I was really liking the staff A LOT. I still like it, just not quite as much.

The second reason is the overall youth of the team, not just in the staff. Outside of Den Dekker and Adams, the lineup is all underclassmen, and the staff is equally as young, with a big chunk of the innings coming from freshmen and sophomores.

Overall I like the talent and makeup of the club and O'Sullivan is doing a heck of a job, but I think this team is a year away from truly being one of the top 2-3 favorites to win it all in Omaha.
