2010 British Open at St Andrews (July 15-18)

Els thinks this kid is really going to be something. I think the old man probably heard him wish him a happy birthday. A good day for South African golf.

Louis Oosthuizen. That's Oosthuizen.

Seven strokes. Not bad for a farm boy.

Which is pronounced OO-west-HAZE-in. He's one of the Ernie Els proteges. He won several times in South Africa and won his first European Tour tournament this year.

We should remember that he had the luck of the draw on Friday, going out early.

What I like about this youngster is his demeanor. Like Els and Goosen at his age. Very even-tempered. Looked like he enjoyed the day thoroughly until 17, where he admitted tightening up.

I like him to win again this year.

Ditto that. He's got the glimmer. Should be fun to watch.

Most of the guys in the booth remarked that while he's got a great tempo to his swing - he doesn't hit it overly far. Consistently in the 280-290 range.

He was getting a boost because of the fast and hard St. Andrews fairways. It's likely he'll have to continue to improve if he wants to compete on the longer and generally slower American courses.

Let's see what he does at Whistling Straits.

Can't help but like the young man. I was surprised by many almost empty grandstand there were for the final round today. Finally, I wonder how much longer Tiger and Phil will be referred to a 1 & 2 in the world?

Well, who else you going to put in there? Prior to Sunday this guy had been in 7 majors and failed to make the cut and then, boom! There's yet to develop three or four golfers steady enough to convince me that Tiger has any real challenge besides himself. I swear with this current field you whisper "Tiger" and half of them soil their armor. Say, "Tiger just birdied," and the other half begins to play like me.

I will say that this guy was impressive on Saturday and Sunday, especially Sunday. He played like someone who knew how to keep his cool, keep the ball in bounds and make the others beat him, while Casey began to press on number four and the rest of the round.

Until someone proves that week in and week out they can compete at that level. You have to remember that where Phil and Tiger are in their careers is different then where some of the young guns are. Phil and Tiger are all about the Majors and the couple of other tournaments that are right up there like the Memorial and the Players. Other than that the rest of the tournaments are for tuneups to the majors for them.

The young guns are still playing there way through the circuit and building their reputations along with their metal to be able to win and win under pressure. That being said, I like Rickie, Rory, and Ricky to start showing up more and more and more...

Thought I would make one last comment on this thread before it sets in the west: I was shocked when the yardage of the Old Course was listed in the newspaper at 7300+. After watching one short hole after another being played on TV, I'm starting to suspect there have to be a couple of half mile par fives somewhere.

Daly Takes Cherry Bomb Trousers to Canada After `Extreme' British Open

John Daly?s trousers are brighter than his golf game at the moment.

Still, he has fans who follow his progress at most events, and that was enough for Loudmouth Golf, a San Mateo, California- based clothing maker that signed the 43-year-old to wear its products in February 2009. His pants were a major discussion at the British Open again, as was his marketing of the trousers.
?The amount of attention we received each day was incredible,? Alan Wallace, sales director at Loudmouth, said in an e-mail. ?We had a 40 percent increase in sales during the entire tournament.?
The American wore psychedelic purple pants in the opening round, that the Daily Telegraph described as resembling ?a pair of curtains designed by Jimi Hendrix.?
They were followed by a neon pink effort, while the third round brought a more somber red tiger print. The trousers have names including Cherry Bomb and Cotton Candy. He wore some featuring an American flag motif for the final 18 holes.
?Technicolor Pants?
Deadspin, an U.S. website that comments on sports and media, said the weekend?s winner was ?Daly?s Technicolor pants party explosion, which added some needed zing to an otherwise boring British Open.?
Daly?s sponsorship deal is dependent on sales. The two-time major winner and his girlfriend were selling trousers in St. Andrews in the evening of July 15, after Daly had finished the opening round in third place, according to the U.K.?s Daily Mail.
