Three Buckeyes Named to 2010 Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Three Buckeyes were named to the preliminary Watch List for the 41st Rotary Lombardi Award. Senior linebacker http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/Vi...743&SPID=10408&DB_OEM_ID=17300&ATCLID=1059313http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/Vi...743&SPID=10408&DB_OEM_ID=17300&ATCLID=1059313Ross Homan, senior defensive lineman http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/Vi...743&SPID=10408&DB_OEM_ID=17300&ATCLID=1151220http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/Vi...743&SPID=10408&DB_OEM_ID=17300&ATCLID=1151220Cameron Heyward and senior offensive guard http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/Vi...743&SPID=10408&DB_OEM_ID=17300&ATCLID=3725709http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/Vi...743&SPID=10408&DB_OEM_ID=17300&ATCLID=3725709Justin Boren all were named to the preseason list.

Eligibility for the Rotary Lombardi Award is limited to down linemen, end-to-end, either on offense or defense, who set up no farther than 10 yards to the left or right of the ball, or linebackers who set up no farther than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage. The candidates earned a place on the preliminary watch list by earning All-American honors or by being named to their respective all-conference first team as selected by the conference's head coaches. The Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List will be updated prior to the start of the 2010 season in order to identify those players who have been selected as pre-season honors candidates.

Boren, a Pickerington, Ohio native, was a first-team All-Big Ten pick by the media last season. He started all 13 games at guard in 2009 and helped the Buckeyes rack up eight 200-yard rushing games and five straight to end the season. The eight 200-yard games are the most in the http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/Vi...743&SPID=10408&DB_OEM_ID=17300&ATCLID=1059367http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/Vi...743&SPID=10408&DB_OEM_ID=17300&ATCLID=1059367Jim Tressel era. The five-straight to end the season were the most consecutive since 1992.

Heyward, a second team All-Big Ten performer, helped anchor an Ohio State defense that allowed just 11 touchdowns over its past 43 quarters of play and ranked third nationally with 5.9 three-and outs per game. Considered by many NFL experts to be a top pick in the NFL draft had he left, Heyward was dominant at defensive end in 2009. He led the Buckeyes with 6.5 sacks and had 10 TFL and led all defensive linemen with 46 tackles. He had his best game of the year with 9 tackles and 2.0 sacks in the win at Penn State.

Homan, another second team All-Big Ten selection last season, led the Buckeyes with 108 tackles, including 57 solo. He also tied for the team lead with five interceptions and two fumble recoveries. He had 15 tackles, 2.0 TFL and one forced fumble in the win over Wisconsin and had interceptions in four of the last five games, including 12 tackles and one interception in the Rose Bowl win over Oregon.

While the Watch List highlights those players who have already received national recognition, any Division 1 player who meets the requirements is eligible for consideration from the Rotary Lombardi Selection Committee. This committee is comprised of more than 500 members, including all past winners and finalists, all Division 1-A head coaches and a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters.

The Rotary Lombardi Watch List, intended as a reference tool for the Selection Committee, will be periodically updated and revised through the conclusion of the voting to determine the 12 Semifinalists for 2010.

Last year's Rotary Lombardi Award winner, Ndamukong Suh (Nebraska) was picked up by the Detroit Lions and Finalist Gerald McCoy (OU) by Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the First Round of the NFL Draft.
The 41st Rotary Lombardi Award will be held on December 7- 8, 2010 at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas. For more information on the two-day schedule of events, please visit www.rotarylombardiaward.org.

Hopefully Posey is on The Biletnikoff Award list by the end of the season!

If that happens, that means that Pryor has "taken that next huge leap forward" and that Posey has rid himself of his "droppsies". If Posey is on the Biletnikoff Award list after the Michigan game, then that means we are undefeated and on our way to the NC game.

Chekwa, Hines Named to Jim Thorpe Award Watch List

Veterans among 35 of the nation's best defensive backs
CHICAGO - Ohio State seniors Chimdi Chekwa and Jermale Hines were named to the 2010 Jim Thorpe Award preseason watch list Monday, a list that includes 35 of the nation's best defensive backs.

Chekwa, a senior corner, recorded 43 tackles, one interception and seven pass break-ups last season and has three INT's and 20 break-ups in his career. He'll serve as veteran of the defensive backfield this season with 39 career games under his belt.

Senior safety Hines was fourth on the team with 57 tackles last season, 3.5 for loss, while recording one sack and two interceptions - one of which he returned for a touchdown against Wisconsin. Hines played all 13 games in 2009 and has played in 30 career games going into his senior year.

The Thorpe Award is one of college football's most sought after and prestigious awards. It is named after history's greatest all-around athlete, a man who excelled as a running back, passer and kicker on offense, but also was an awesome defensive back. Recognized in the Pro Football Hall of Fame simply as "The Legend", Thorpe also played professional baseball and won Olympic gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon.

The Jim Thorpe Award "watch list" is determined by analysis of the pre-season All-American teams listed in at least six pre-season college football annual magazines. Four points are awarded for first team, three points for second team, two points for third and one point for honorable mentions. This procedure determines approximately 30-40 players on the pre-season watch list. This list is not final and players who have outstanding seasons are added as the season progresses.

A "Screening Committee" of Jim Thorpe Association members follows these players throughout the season, watching games and researching information sources to grade Thorpe Award candidates on the basis of performance on the field, athletic ability and character. The committee meets on the first Monday in November to narrow the field to 10 or 12 semi-finalists.

The committee meets again on the Monday before Thanksgiving to select the three finalists. The names of these finalists are submitted to a national panel of about 50 sports writers, sportscasters, coaches and former players who vote to determine the winner. The three finalists are invited to the ESPN College Football Awards Show, and the winner is announced during the show.

Formal presentation of the Jim Thorpe Award takes place at ceremonies in Oklahoma City on the first Tuesday in February following the national signing date for college football recruits.

Last season Pryor passed for 2,094 yards with 18 touchdowns and led the Buckeyes with 779 yards and seven TDs on the ground. The dual-threat quarterback has rushed for 1,410 yards during the last two seasons, the sixth-most by an FBS quarterback during that span. TP is on Manning Award watch list too. Not sure where this fits in with the rest of these awards, but thought I'd share!

News / Allstate Sugar Bowl

In addition to being named the Preseason Big Ten Player of the Year for offense, Ohio State's Terrelle Pryor (official bio) was also tabbed as the league's most exciting player in a poll of top players in the league. Pryor, who was the MVP of the Rose Bowl last season, is also a member of the Manning Award Preseason Watch List for the second year in a row. The Manning Award, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, is releasing the Watch List one player per day through its official Facebook and Twitter pages. The award has honored the top quarterback in the nation for the past six years.
