2010 Aussie Open - Men

Murray has been playing some sharp, error free tennis.
It is too bad the #5 seed Murray is in the same quarter as the #2 seed.

IMO, every guy left is capable of winning the tournament. Davydenko didn't look great against Verdasco, but the Russian has been red hot the past few months and has won his last 2 matchups vs. Federer, whom he plays next. Drawing him is just as tough as getting Murray, but Federer looked very sharp against Hewitt last night.

And Cilic has a big game. His match against Del Potro was a classic, a real slugfest with two 6'6" guys that can move around the court. His match with Roddick should feature at least two tie-breakers.

Djokovic-Tsonga will also be interesting, that was the final in Melbourne two years ago, but Jo-Wilfried has beateb him a few times since then. They're in the top half (Federer's).

Right now, I'm picking Federer over Djokovic in the top half, and Murray over Cilic in the bottom. But no outcome would shock me.

So far, two huge BB73 upset predictions fulfilled-- 1. Cilic and 2. Murray in the semis, but alas,
3. Only one tie breaker. Roddick didn't get the memo! :(

6 guys left, and I've got vCash on all of them. :wink2:

Roddick played great in the 3rd and 4th sets, and had Cilic at love-40 in the opening game in the 5th set, but Cilic served his way out of that. Andy got treatment for a shoulder injury in the second set, and couldn't serve at full power, but he played excellent baseline tennis in the 3rd and 4th sets (he rarely serves and volleys anyways) - he just couldn't sustain it in the final set.

Murray was on top of Nadal from the get-go. Nadal was down two sets before anything was noticeable with his knee - he tried to keep going after he tweaked it early in the third set, but decided to not risk further injury - it was the first time he's ever stopped playing during a match in a major.

Shocking stat - Nadal's record in his last 11 matches against top-10 players is 1-10: 1 win against Tsonga, 3 losses to Davydenko, 3 losses to Djokovic, 2 losses to Del Potro, 1 loss each to Federer, Soderling, and Murray.

Rafa's ranking is going to sink fast later this year, especially if he isn't healthy enough to win the French. That will make it tougher for him to win any other majors in 2010/2011, since he'll end up facing guys like Djokovic, Murray, and Del Potro in the quarters.

I really like Cilic's game, but I still think Murray will take him out - and since he's much more rested that Cilic, it could be a one-sided match.

Does anybody know if there are any up and coming American stars that should be a good one on the tour?? It just seems like outside of Roddick and Isner (who's slowly getting better), there really aren't any good American tennis players, I really wish we could return to the 90s and 80s when it seemed like there were a lot

Donald Young was the #1 Junior in the world about 4 years ago, when guys like Cilic and Del Potro were also juniors, but he hasn't developed a power game like those guys have (of course, they're both 6'6"), so he hasn't been able to break through yet.

Not a lost of promising juniors in the USTA events right now.
However the #4 seed at the Aussie juniors section is Mitchell Frank who is scheduled to play today to reach the quarterfinals. He is from Annadale, Virginia, and attends a junior tennis academy in College Park.
Frank is rated the #1 prospect/recruit for American High School juniors (class of 2011).
In summarization, he does exceptionally well in Junior tournaments with American competition but struggles when competing internationally.

Mitchell Frank Bio

Frank is the only American left playing in the Aussie juniors (Nick Chappell lost in 1st round).
Should be interesting to see if he could be the next American hope.

Federer and Tsonga advance to the semis in the upper half. Fed looks unstoppable, penetrating a red hot Davydenko, while Tsonga persevered in a fairly even contest, capitalized on 8 out of 12 break points, and took advantage of Djokovic fatigue.
Should be interesting to see how well conditioned Federer is if he has to go 5 sets with Tsonga.
Cilic and Murray will square off in the lower draw.
The manner in which Murray dominated Rafa suggests he may be the favorite, although Cilic can get streaky, and as he did with ARod put the hammer down.
My v cash speculation has been squandered (Roddick, Nadal, Verdasco, etc.)
Only profit opportunity is Fed.
BTW BB73 has major money on 4 of 4 options left in the semis.
This is a can't lose, but curious, which semifinalist offers the BB73 maximum payout?

We have got to root for the prosperity of anyone who has offered matching v-cash bailout money to motivate BP website donors for the 2010 drive. :)

I put 565 million down. If either Federer or Cilic win, I'll get 1 billion back. If Murray wins I'll get 720 million, if Tsonga wins, I'll get 760 million.

Djokovic actually left the court to throw up after the third set. He was worn out, and Tsonga played well - but if Djokovic wasn't sick the match was a tossup (so to speak).

Federer was getting blown away in the first set and a half. Down a set and serving at 1-3, 15-40 the whole match changed missed Davydenko missed a backhand. I can't remember such a dramatic turnaround - unless it was Serena coming back from a set a 0-4 down earlier last night.

I like Federer and Murray in the semis, but they're the obvious favorites.

Britain's Andy Murray advanced Thursday to the men's Australian finals with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Marin Cilic.
On Sunday Murray will meet the winner of Friday's semifinal between #1 seed Roger Federer and 6th seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
The world's most populous nation was genuinely excited when two Chinese women reached the semis in Austalia.
Will Britain have reason to celebrate or will Scotland be a loser again?
Check out this Murray quote from ESPN.

The last British man to win at the Australian Open was Fred Perry in 1934. Perry won Wimbledon in 1936, the last British man to win there, a drought that has worn heavily on the psyche of players such as Murray, Tim Henman and others before them.

Murray is the first British man to reach the Australian final since John Lloyd in 1977 and the first to reach two Grand Slam finals in the Open era.

Murray used to joke several years ago that when he lost he was Scottish, and when he won the media referred to him as British.
He could make everybody happy in the United Kingdom if he breaks the drought on Sunday.
