  • As with the Tigers and the Gators, so much interest was generated last year by the discussion of the Sun Devils that it warrants a thread this year. I would like to write something up on ASU's outlook and expectations (so says Captain Bite-Off-More-Than-He-Can-Chew :lol:). Reag: feel free to comment or add anything. It would be appreciated.

    The Sun Devils are currently ranked #2 by Baseball America and for good reason - they started their season 11-0. All of their games so far have been in Arizona, though. ASU hosts Grand Canyon State and then an interesting 3 game series against the SEC's Auburn. They then travel to Fullerton, CA to take on traditional powerhouse Cal State - Fullerton.

    Thanks JCOSU for starting this thread. I'm a little busy right now but will add some insight as soon as I get a little extra time. Sun Devils are looking good so far, but like you said, all home games for the most part. Should be a fun year.

    ASU had a great 2009 and hope to do better in 2010. ASU lost their 3 best players in (P)Mike Leake picked 8th overall, (CF)Jason Kipnis picked 63rd overall and (C)Carlos Ramirez picked 261st overall. The Sun Devils also lost their long time head coach Pat Murphy.

    Good news is, ASU had the 2nd or 3rd best recruiting class in the nation this year and had the best recruiting class in the nation last year. So the Sun Devils bring back plenty of young talent to restock the shelves. First year head coach Tim Esmay is an ex-Sun Devil baseball player and has been on the Sun Devil coaching staff for 5 years as an assistant coach. We're hoping Tim uses the bullpen better than Pat Murphy ever did.

    The Sun Devils are 11-0 and have played some good teams to date. They have beaten #10 Oregon State, Cal Poly and UC Riverside. Other notable non-conference games will be against Cal State Fullerton, Auburn, BYU, Houston and San Diego.

    The Pac-10 appears to be better this year with ASU, UCLA, Stanford and Oregon State all ranked in the top 30.

    11 new Sun Devils have already seen the field this year including 6 true freshman and 5 JC transfers.

    ASU has won 3 Pac-10 titles in a row and is picked to win their 4th straight.

    There are only 4 seniors on the team, 8 juniors, and 20 sophomores/freshman.

    ASU beats Grand Canyon University (local private Phoenix college-DII) 4-2. Now 12-0

    Auburn up next for a 3 game series starting Friday in Tempe. I hope I don't hear any S-E-C chants this weekend. :shake:
    I kind of figured "Grand Canyon University" was in Arizona somewhere :lol:

    The SEC traveling out the south? Say it ain't so! :)

    It actually should be a very interesting series and may tell both teams exactly where they are Nationally right now.

    Hey, some people are stupid and might not know!

    I'm hoping to go to the opener vs. Auburn on Friday night.

    ASU always plays a pretty good non-conference schedule and sometimes we can pry a SEC team from their comfort zone.

    Breaking down Auburn vs. ASU

    Batting averages:
    ASU = .372
    Auburn = .373

    Opponents batting averages
    ASU = .223
    Auburn = .293

    ERA
    ASU = 2.6
    Auburn = 4.99

    Runs scored
    ASU = 126
    Auburn = 99

    Runs against
    ASU = 36
    Auburn = 72

    So it appears both teams are pretty good hitters, but ASU seems to have much better pitching. Auburn is 9-2 and ASU is 12-0. Should be interesting, but I'm guessing ASU takes 2 of 3.
