2010-2011 Ohio State Women's Track (B1G Champs) and Cross Country

Comments from Ohio XC State Champion Michelle Thomas on why she chose Ohio State:

"I chose to attend The Ohio State University for a variety of reasons. One of the biggest reasons was I didn't want to go to far away from home because I wanted to still be able to see my family and for them to be able to see me run. Another main factor was the fact that this is my home state, I think there is something to be said for that. I have ran in Ohio my whole life, I have ran at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium at the state track meet and to be able to continue to run there gives you a sense of pride that I don't think I would have if I went out of state. I also really liked the girls on the Cross Country team, the day I went up for my official visit I felt right at home, I knew then that I could see myself going there and running with those girls as my future teammates! Coach Neal also seems like the type of coach I want in college, he wants to push his athletes to be the best that they can be and he wants to accomplish big goals! Ohio State also has a very good education program and you can graduate with your masters all at once which seemed like a plus. After considering all these things about Ohio State I knew that this was the college where I wanted to continue not only my education but my running career! I can't wait to attend The Ohio State University and to be able to say that I am a BUCKEYE!!!!"

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The 25th-ranked Ohio State women's track and field team wrapped up day one of competition at both the New Balance Collegiate Invitational and the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational Friday evening.

Long Jumpers Lead Buckeyes in New York
Ohio State's sprinters and field athletes enjoyed a solid opening day at the New Balance Invite in New York City, with several runners making it to the finals and the Buckeye long jumpers posting impressive numbers.

The Buckeyes made an immediate impact in the College Division of the long jump, as three athletes placed in the Top 4 overall. Sophomore Christienne Linton (5.90m), freshman Adenike Pedro ( 5.89m) and junior Kelcey McKinney (5.87m) went 2-3-4, with Linton and McKinney jumping to season-best distances. UConn's Kristen Brown finished in first-place at 6.00m.

Senior Letecia Wright finished first in the College Division of the 200m dash prelims, securing a spot in tomorrow's finals with a season-best time of 24.52, her fastest time this season.

Wright and her Maryland counterpart, junior All-American Christina Manning, represented Ohio State well in the 60m hurdle championship, as Manning (fourth, 8:18) edged Wright (fifth, 8.19) at the finish line. USC's Nia Ali took the title in 8.06 seconds, the top Division I time this season.

Junior Madison McNary ran well in a competitive 60m dash championship race, finishing 14th in 7.44 seconds. Lakya Brookins of South Carolina was the winner in a time of 7.18, the fastest 60 time in the country so far this year.

Wagner Impresses at Meyo Invitational
While the Buckeye field and sprint squads enjoyed the bright lights of the Big Apple, the Buckeye distance runners were hard at work at the Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind.

Meredith Wagner was the top performer for the Scarlet and Gray at Notre Dame - the freshman demolished her personal record in the 5000m run with a sixth-place time of 16:58.47. Finishing behind Wagner were teammates Ellen Birmingham (seventh, 16:59.95), Kelsey McHugh (15th, 17:09.34), Sarah Foster (17th, 17:14.77) and Sarah Lowe (20th, 17:23.02). Taylor Pogue of Michigan earned the win in a time of 16:36.73, a Top 10 time nationally.

The Buckeye distance medley team ran its way to a sixth-place time of 11:49.36. Michigan captured first-place with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 11:04.26, the second-best DMR time in Division I this season.

Nothing to really write home about here, except for another very strong performance from the hurdlers.

Three Buckeyes Finish in Top 20 During Day One of Mt. SAC Relays

WALNUT, Calif. – Several members of the Ohio State women’s track and field team wrapped up day one at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut Calif. Three Buckeyes ran Thursday and each finished in the Top 20.

Tori Brink competed in the 3000m steeplechase Olympic Division and placed 11th. The sophomore ran an outstanding race, setting a new PR and breaking her own school record by 11 seconds to cross the line in 10:27.45. This time currently stands as the 20th-fastest Division I time this season and the third-fastest in the Big Ten.

“Tori really came out and competed well today. She had a hard fall on her second water jump but managed to get up and still run an 11 second PR,” distance coach Chris Neal said. “Every time she steps on the track she seems to get better.”

Ohio State Collects Four First-Place Finishes Despite Dreary Weather

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Ohio State women’s track and field team completed competition at both the Mt. SAC Relays and the Dave Rankin Invitational. Both meets allowed the Buckeyes to face top competition in preparation for the Jesse Owens Track Classic next weekend.

Meredith Wagner was the lone runner for the Scarlet and Gray today at the Mt. SAC Relays. The freshman shaved almost 10 seconds off of her previous fastest time, setting a new PR in the 5000m. She finished the race in 16:37.47, the fourth-best time in school history and seventh-fastest in the Big Ten this season.

While Wagner enjoyed the southern California sunshine, her teammates endured chilly temperatures, rain and wind in West Lafayette. Despite the weather, four first-place finishes were collected by Ohio State at the Invitational. Freshman Chesna Sykes won the 100m dash in a time of 12.34. All-American Christina Manning crossed the finish line ahead of fellow All-American Letecia Wright for the first time this outdoor season, taking the title in 13.08, a top 10 performance nationally.

26th Jesse Owens Track Classic Complete

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Jesse Owens Track Classic has come to an end after two days of exciting competition at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Several members of Jesse Owens? family were on hand today to witness the action on the track.

?The Jesse Owens Classic is a meet we always enjoy because it?s a chance to perform at home in front of our friends, and families,? said head coach Karen Dennis. ?This year was more special to have the chance to perform with members of the Owens family in attendance. The women were motivated to do well after having attended the banquet on Thursday. They felt like VIP?s being in the same room with the mayor, our University president, athletic director, olympians, community sponsors and, of course, Mr. Bill Cosby.?

The Buckeyes collected three victories on Sunday. Leading off a 1-2-3-4 sweep in the 100m dash, knocking off two-time defending Big Ten champion Shavon Greaves of Penn State in the process, was All-American Christina Manning. Manning posted the fastest time in the Big Ten and the fifth-best in school history, crossing the finish line in 11.58 for first place.

"We had some really good performances in areas like the 4x100m relay and the 100m dash where we dominated going 1-4," said Coach Dennis. "Our sprinters and hurdlers are healthy and showing improvement weekly."

Coming off a team championship at the 2011 Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships, the buzzsaw that is the OSU Women's Team continued its brilliance by winning the Big Ten Outdoor Title as well.

As they did indoors, the OSU women dominated the sprinting/hurdling events and added in some strong contributions in the field events to best defending outdoor champion Penn State by a score of 135 to 122.

OSU went 1-2-3 in the 100 (Manning (with a huge PR), McNarry, Sykes), took first in the 200 (McNarry), first in the 400 (McGinnis), 1-2-7 in the 100 Hurdles (Manning, Wright, Gray), and grabbed a third in the 400 Hurdles (Cousar). The 4x100 team of Manning, Wright, McNarry, and Sykes also took first and nearly set a meet record.

In the field events, Kelcey Mckinney won the title in the Triple Jump and took 7th in the long jump. Maggie Mullen finished second in the Javelin and third in the Hammer Throw. Alana Gray took third in the Heptathalon. Alexis Thomas finished fourth in the Hammer Throw, Adienne Perko took 5th in the Long Jump, Ashley Galbreith finished 5th in the Heptathalon and 6th in the High Jump, and Rachel Mack took 6th in the Long Jump.

The OSU win is made all the more impressive by the fact that the distance squad appears to pretty beat up injury wise and wasn't able to contribute any points to the effort after posting solid results at last year's Big Ten meet.

The women also only lose one scorer next year (Wright), so it appears that they will continue to be a force on the conference level.

Great job ladies!

Manning Named Big Ten Athlete of the Year; Dennis Coach of the Year

COLUMBUS, Ohio - After winning the first Big Ten indoor title in program history in February, the Ohio State women's track and field team followed that historic first by winning its first Big Ten outdoor title in program history last weekend. In recognition of their outstanding individual efforts, junior All-American Christina Manning and head coach Karen Dennis were honored Wednesday by the Big Ten conference office for their achievements during the season and over the weekend.

Manning, a Waldorf, Md., native, was named Big Ten Athlete of the Year and Athlete of the Championships after claiming Big Ten titles in the 100m dash, 100m hurdles and the 4x100m relay. The junior captured those same accolades after the Big Ten indoor championships as well. With a facility record being set in each of Manning's title performances, the All-American truly enjoyed a weekend to remember in Iowa City.

Running anchor for the 4x100m relay team, Manning claimed her first title of the meet with teammates Letecia Wright, Madison McNary and Chesna Sykes. The relay team finished with a time of 43.94, the second-fastest time in school history. In the 100m hurdles, Manning led a 1-2 sweep for the Buckeyes, capturing the gold in a personal-best time of 12.86, the second-best mark in school history and the third best in the nation. Manning then led Ohio State's unprecedented 1-2-3 finish in the 100m dash, crossing the line in 11.29, the second-fastest time in Ohio State history, 21st-best in the nation and a new personal record.

Thirteen Buckeyes to Compete at NCAA East Regional Meet

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 27 Ohio State women's track and field team is set to send 13 student-athletes to the 2011 NCAA East Regional preliminaries on the campus of Indiana University May 26-28.
After sweeping both Big Ten indoor and outdoor championships this season, the Buckeyes will now look to carry that momentum onto the NCAA stage.

"We do want to (improve)," head coach Karen Dennis said. "Regionals is what sets us up for the national stage. We think we have some competitors with Maggie in the javelin, Norianna in the shot, Alexis in the hammer. Then we have Christina and Letecia in the hurdles, who I still think should be on the top podium at the national championships. They have that ability. I think our 4x100 team is a team that can run with anybody in the country and that's running in cold weather for the most part this year. So I still think there is more left in this team as a whole. All of our competitors are poised to advance and we just have to go out and get it done this weekend."

...

A look at the Buckeyes set to compete this weekend:

Christina Manning - 100m dash, 100m hurdles, 4x100m relay
Madison McNary - 100m dash, 200m dash, 4x100m relay
Chesna Sykes - 100m dash, 4x100m relay
Letecia Wright - 100m hurdles, 4x100m relay
Alana Gray - 100m hurdles
Nyjah Cousar - 400m hurdles
Shaniqua McGinnis - 400m dash
Ellen Birmingham - 10000m run
Ashley Galbraith - high jump
Kelcey McKinney - triple jump
Norianna Brown - shot put

The National Championships at Drake University (Iowa) start today and go through Saturday. Ohio State women participating in the National Championships. Number in parentheses is their seed place out of 24 participants:

200m - Madison Mcnary (21st)
100m hurdles - Letecia Wright (2nd)
100m hurdles - Christina Manning (4th)
4x100m Relay - Letecia Wright, Madison Mcnary, Chesna Sykes, Christina Manning (15th)

If the women place where they are seeded (which hardly ever happens) they'll finish the National Championships with 17 points. Here's hoping they perform better than that!
