2010-11: The Year of the Buckeye

PlanetFrnd

Head Coach
Multiple national championships in a school year are rare, and something to be celebrated, no matter the sports. Some schools have been able to pull of the feat with two "minor" sports, or a "major" (football, m/w hoops) and a minor.

Not often has a school pulled off two majors in the same year. Recently, of note:

UConn once swept men's and women's basketball. Florida once swept football and men's basketball.

Could the Buckeyes sweep ALL 3 majors in 2010?

As it stands right now, the football team returns most of its starters, losing Coleman, Thad and a handful of important seniors from the 2-deep. Coleman and Thad will be missed - as will Ray, Rob Rose, etc. - but the bulk of the contributors are back with many talented youngsters waiting to see the field (hence http://www.buckeyeplanet.com/forum/...more-geared-ntl-championship-2010-2011-a.html)

In men's hoops, Turner could leave. There is outside speculation that Buford could too, but nothing is definite. If both stay, the core of Lighty, Buford, Diebs, Dallas and, of course, Turner plus the top recruiting class in the nation almost assuredly make the Buckeyes a preseason top-5 with talent and experience on par with any of the top teams.

The Lady Buckeyes won't lose ANY starters from a team that is STEAMROLLING teams right now and have to be considered contenders to win the NCAA THIS year.

So... 2010-11... could it be done? Other than the football schedule, which plays out nicely with PSU, scUM and southern scUM at home, I haven't examined schedules. That being said, it's fair to predict that both hoops teams will have the potential to enter their respective tournaments as high seeds...

I will say it now because... why the hell NOT?

2010-11 will be the year of the Buckeye!

If the men's team can hit shots OSU could win both basketball titles this season. And we all know that the football team is going to be prepped for a run next year.

Sorry, the lack of depth and size is too much to overcome. The men's basketball team will be solid this year but the national championship is a pipe dream.

Next year and the year after are possibles.

Love the topic and the positive outlook. Wish I shared it.

For football the O should be stellar. But how many times on this board have we argued that it is defenses that win championships. And defenses start with the DL. We will lose at least 5 of our DL rotation. That said, there is not a game on the schedule that is not winnable sitting here today. If Heyward comes back, maybe.

Ladies BBall will return an absolutely amazing squad. Could be the best shot of the lot although UConn will still be very strong.

Men's BBall is all about Turner. Without him we are bottom tier Big Ten. If he returns and the Frosh Big Men can play out of the box, maybe. But there is absolutely nothing I have seen that makes me think Turner will even consider a 4th year.

I like our odds of a hat trick for 2011-12 better than 2010-2011.

Assuming Pryor stays there are very few critical losses from the football team (I know about the LB, but we are loaded with young talent) and those great recruiting classes of the past two years all become upper classmen - including an awesome OL.

It may be a complete rebuild for men's BBall, but that is a nice group of six coming in. It will be all about the one and dones and who else we get for 2011. Even then we would be a dark horse, but not like we would be next season.

And the best three players on the Ladies team will all be here in two years. Going to be a title contender at least through 2011.
