All-star team and player-of-the year selections are highly subjective and, if anything, tend to spark debate among fans in all sports. That said, it's difficult to make a case against any of the special awards winners on the
Dispatch All-Metro football team.
Offensive Player of the Year Storm Klein of Licking Valley and co-defensive Players of the Year Zach Boren of Pickerington Central and Josh Kusan of DeSales each powered his team to a state semifinal. All three were finalists for the Associated Press Mr. Football Award and earned Player of the Year in their respective divisions on the All-Ohio teams as well.
Coach of the Year Scott Bartholomew was responsible for turning a Logan Elm team that was 0-10 in 2007 into an 11-1 playoff qualifier in his first season. He was the state Coach of the Year in Division III.
Other players might have boasted better statistics, but Klein was the workhorse for a 12-2 team.
Klein rushed for 1,804 yards and scored 27 touchdowns in helping his team back to the Division III final four for a second straight season. Although he is expected to play linebacker at Ohio State, Klein played defense only part time this season in order to carry a hefty load on offense.
"We had high expectations, but even though we didn't get back to the state championship game again it was so cool to be able to go out with all of my friends," he said. "Believe me, I savored all the moments we had together, and I'll never forget them."
Panthers coach Randy Baughman said it's unlikely that the school will ever produce another player the caliber of Klein, a four-year starter who ran for 6,349 yards and scored 99 touchdowns. Both figures rank him in the top 10 in Ohio history.
"As good as Storm is and has been for us, he's still a team player by all means," Baughman said. "To achieve what he has achieved for four straight seasons shows what a special player he is. It seems like he's been here forever. I'll know we'll really miss him."
