2009 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

What is the situation with Freeman and the staff? We all know the pros and cons on Freeman, but regardless, he's an in-state kid that has an offer list that is really impressive, and yet there has been next to nothing said about Buckeye interest. Is the lack of interest more to do with the fact that we're looking for a guard as opposed to a tackle, that he's such a wild card, that he's a Trotwood Madison kid (still don't totally understand the rumors of negative implications here), or something else?

Buckskin86,thanks for the video, it was real cool, the 09 class is going to be scary. Not to sure about other classes at tOSU, can someone tell me how this 09 class compares to others???

There is only one measuring stick for recruiting classes at The Ohio State University:

National Championship
4 First round draft picks
8 All-Americans
Lombardi & Outland winner
National Defensive MVP

The staff decided long ago that Freeman was not in their plans...much like Zebrie Sanders.

We're always looking for tackles ... just like every team in college football.

You don't need to understand it, just believe it. Trotwood Madison is the Anti-Glenville.

Talent ... and demeanor. Ohio State has a very definite "profile" for offensive linemen, and Freeman just doesn't fit it. He has never been a factor as far as the Buckeyes are concerned.

Because we offer a guy doesn't mean what order the coaches view him. The coaches do have a pecking order.
If the staff offers a kid, it means they want him. Obviously, if the quota at that position is filled up, the kid-Vlad Emilien for example-will be politely told the ship has sailed. However, that does not seem to be the case for Martinez-he was offered after/at the same time as Longo, so the coaches are still fishing. I think the staff figures it can get an elite national OL like Watt or Martinez, they will take him, otherwise they will be happy w/ Hall (hopefully) and the other OL and use the schollie somewhere else.
If you want to talk "pecking order" look at WHEN the coaches offer the schollie-that gives you an indication of the staff's pecking order. That is why the staff flooded the field w/ DB offers-they wanted to be through w/ recruitment for the most part. Besides, DB's and WR's are more high strung and difficult to recruit-OL are more placid to deal with!

Ohio State's 2009 football recruiting class is ranked No. 1 nationally by Rivals.com after the Buckeyes received a No. 4 ranking for the 2008 class.
"The Buckeyes have assembled the nation's best class, with one five-star commitment and 16 four-star players," the Web site reports. "They also have a whopping 23 (now 24) commitments, the most in the nation. But the class isn't just about quantity. It's about quality. Five-star linebacker Dorian Bell (of Monroeville, Pa.) is a major catch, as are Jamie Wood, Justin Green and C.J. Barnett."
ESPN.com ranks the class third behind Texas and Southern California, noting that "we still question some of the bottom of the class."
Rivals.com ranks Michigan fourth even though new coach Rich Rodriguez has only 12 recruits.

The article has been posted in another thread, but in it JT talks about how Skinner might be done for medical reasons. I feel bad and all, and wish him nothing but the best, but would this free up a schollie, or would he be on until he graduates??

With NCAA approval they can put him on medical waiver and free up the schollie. But as Skinner is a Sr that would probably go to a Senior walk on and doesn't help for the future.

Medical waivers remain on scholarship, but they don't count against the 85-man limit ... meaning that the kid still gets a free education, but the football team gets to fill his spot with another scholarship player.

In Skinner's case, it's kind of a moot point, since 2008 was going to be his last year of eligibility anyway.... In other words, Skinner taking a medical waiver in 2008 won't open up an additional scholarship for 2009.

Did anyone think that maybe tOSU is taking a wait and see with Freeman. He is such an unproven commodity that, perhaps, the coaches want to see his senior season before they decide to make a push for his services. If he goes somewhere else before they make a final judgement...
Cie le vie!

No. I think the staff has already made up their mind on him.
