2009 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

"Only the ignorant recruiting fans think that's a big deal. A lot of the great players won't even make their commitments until December and January. The race in recruiting almost always goes to the tortoise, not the hare
The Lemming forgot to add that the reason why he thinks these guys are great, is the fact that the longer they remain uncommitted, the more money he can make by speculating on them.

The race in recruiting goes to the program that gets the most out of the talent that they sign, regardless of what the so-called recruiting gurus think.

The way I read him is "everybody knows that the best players don't sign until the end, and those who don't think so are just ignoramuses."

That may have held a small amount of truth 4 or 5 years ago, but nowadays it's not only a faulty way of thinking, but you could argue that it's, well, ignorant.

13/24 of the current 5 stars on rivals have issued verbal committs, including the #1 player..........

Yes, but only 1 of the committed Rivals 100 has committed to ND, so the rest must be better. Well, except for the fact that ND has 2 committed kickers, unrated by Rivals, both 5-stars if you ask Lemming...

USC's is really impressive(going by Rivals ratings). 13 of their 15 commitments are in the top 250. We have 14.

Yeah , USC is impressive, they always are, at least according to ther services and the media. But, on closer inspection all but one of these 4&5 stars verbs USC has are CA kids, mostly SoCal. Thing is, for my money, I'm not so sure that they are that much better than the kids in the OH-PA-MI-IL-IN-KY belt,(about the same area & population). I just don't buy it year-in-year-out that CA recruits are so much better and deserve to be rated so much higher...across the board and especially early on. I've seen the game here and I'm not sure it deserves all of the accolades it gets. The media is certainly more sophisticated...which could be part of the reason.

USC recruiting is ho-hummer every year. They routinely pluck all of the 5 star and top 4star recruits right here in their back yard with basically no competition and always plenty to choose from and then cherry pick the rest on the country selling weather and Hollywood to all these impressionable, starry eyed kids. It's too easy!

The job Ohio State has done is nothing short of a miracle. Especially seeing how the decked is so stacked against them given the weather, economy and getting blasted or beat out of the last 2 NC games amidst a firestorm of criticism that they shouldn't have been there in the first place.

Mr Jim Tressell and Staff are working their butt-off and are heads above the fold in my heavily biased eyes. They are not looking off during real estate purchases for their players or making sure that they have enough spending cash, either. They deserve number 1 because they are!

Yeah, getting kids to go to school in the middle of a ghetto is a walk in the park.

Agreed with everything but this. A miracle? This isn't Temple we're talking about. And we don't play in Antarctica. The coaches have done a great job but this is Ohio St. and we have won 3 straight Big-10 titles. This shouldn't be unexpected.

I've thought about this recruiting topic as well...consider the big time football programs (top 25 type) with proximity to USC and Ohio State that battle for recruits from the region.

Just off the top...

USC: Cal, UCLA, Arizona State, Oregon, BYU

OSU: Michigan, ND, PSU, UWV, Louisville, Tennessee, Wisky, Va. Tech (more east coast), Illinois, Missouri (recently), Cincinnati, Pitt

Obviously, the schools from bigger conferences have built in advantages like money, publicity, and most of the time facilities, but OSU has had a lot of great recruiting classes with what seems like much more competition to get them. :osu:

Good point. :)

Rough, yes, and old, but I wouldn't call the campus the 'middle' of the ghetto. You need to go a little further south to find the real battlegrounds. Besides, students are fairly insulated with a lot of commercial and historic buildings close by. And with the freeways all around, you are minutes from anywhere in off peak hours.

And to locals, they grew up knowing all about where the campus is, so no one notices. Athletes coming from out of town aren't necessarily going to be shown the absolute worst. And whose to say that where they are coming from is any better. Just my take, anyway.
