2009 tOSU Offensive Line Discussion (official thread)

Just looked at some of the replays...after Shugarts went down, it looks like Miller and Cordle spent the majority of the time at LT and RT, respectively, including on the long pass play to Posey. Adams played well in filling in for Miller, but I had always been satisfied with the play of Miller. And now it looks like our best line may be the one that we started the season with.

Marcus Hall was in there too at RT, and he did well.

Hall was in on the third down play before the bomb. His massive frame jumped out even among the other giants. He certainly did well, but I would expect the majority of snaps going to Cordle at RT.

edit: the future competition between Miller/Adams at LT and Shugarts/Hall at RT is going to be exciting to watch.

Agreed.

On a side note, news is that Shugarts should be ok and ready for the Iowa game.

I for one LOVED the toughness JB Shugarts showed... the medical staff probably had to hide his helmet from him to keep him off the field. Hell, who am I kidding, they probably had to take all of his pads away because he would've taken someone else's helmet.

OSU's offensive line learns to deal with adversity

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The game program was invented for seasons like this on the Ohio State offensive live, where the starting lineup has changed six times in the first 10 games.

It might be different again for No. 11, when the Buckeyes (9-2, 5-1) play host to Iowa (9-1, 5-1) on Saturday with the Big Ten's automatic qualifier to the Bowl Championship Series -- mostly likely for the Rose Bowl -- on the line. Right tackle J.B. Shugarts, the starter there for eight straight games, limped off the field with an apparent left leg injury during the win at Penn State on Saturday.

Yet the line simply reshuffled the deck again and kept on playing.

"It's rough. We've shuffled around a lot," left guard Justin Boren said. "But we're getting better as a unit.

"There's some stuff we have to continue to work on, but it is hard when you've got guys going in and out of there."

Only two linemen have started every game: sophomore center Michael Brewster and junior right guard Bryant Browning. But Brewster has been playing for several weeks with a sprained right ankle that seems to require a little more tape wrapped around it with every passing game.

Brewster hasn't missed a start, but he reportedly has sat out some practices to help the joint heal. That can't do much for the synchronicity of a group whose almost every move is choreographed or keyed off joint recognition of what the defensive front is trying to do.

"Guys miss practice, I miss practice, you're not on the same page," Brewster said.

"We've just got to stay focused in the film room and when we're studying, because we know we have the abilities to (get the job done). We've just got to do it all the time."

I will have to admit that at times, i have been critical of the offensive line play and its coaching staff over the past 2 or 3 years. From now on i will
just keep my comments to myself. One thing that i never thought about was
how banged up the offensive line is, yet they still go out there try there best. Could this year be one of the worst for an Ohio State team to go in and play with so many injuries ? Well if it is then you can't ask for more, from a team than what they have been through. I hope that they continue to Jell as a unit in the next two games and really come out healthy at all positions. Good Health and good luck to you guys.

Considering the number of injuries and illnesses that the line has had this year you can't help but be impressed by how the line played last Saturday. By far there best game, even with the injury to Shugarts and the continuing line shuffling. I wonder if we are starting to see some of the results of hiring Keith Uecker earlier this year?

I have to admit that I am pleased with the play of the offensive line this season. Minus the Purdue game, I believe the line has been pretty consistent. I'm glad Shugarts is OK because he is a great player, but I do think Andrew Miller may be better. I have been really impressed with Miller this season. Above all though, great job of the interior line on subduing Odrick. This guy gave us fits last season and has been a terror all year long, but we made him relatively quiet.

I like the progress the O line has made this year. Some days weren't so good but others were. I like the way they are starting to play as a unit but even more I like the attitude they have. I can tell they want to play and whop some butt in doing it.
Wait' till next year guys , woo hoo we gonna be bad.

Herbie gave major props to the O-Line today on CFB Live. Said that he wanted to give props to a unit he has been very critical of recently and said they played their best game against PSU and he think they're turning a corner with that momentum and thinks we'll dominate Iowa Saturday.

OSU notebook: Top eight blockers cleared to play

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State will have its top eight offensive linemen available for its game Saturday against Iowa, even if some aren't 100 percent healthy.

For the first time in four weeks, tackles Andrew Miller, Jim Cordle, Mike Adams, J.B. Shugarts and Marcus Hall will be ready, along with guards Justin Boren and Bryant Browning and center Michael Brewster. It's as healthy as the Buckeyes have been up front in a while.

"The degree of their health, it would be hard for me to judge, because I'm not the one whose foot hurts or ankle hurts, or whatever," coach Jim Tressel said yesterday. "But they're available."

Adams has been out for three games because of a knee injury. Shugarts limped out of the win at Penn State last week because of an apparent knee injury, but he has practiced this week, Tressel said.
