2009 tOSU Offensive Line Discussion (official thread)

These are my exact thoughts. The line play is just pathetic. Not only do they not execute well, but they also get more penalties than any other line I have seen.

The penalties are incredibly frustrating and inexcusable at this point but the OL had been playing alright overall this year until yesterday. Not really fair to trash them for the entire year over one awful game.

With that being said, the recipe to beat our Offense has been found. How they respond, and the adjustments made to combat this, will determine the rest of our season.

Browning has really disappointed me. Last year and this year, he has really hurt us. Consistently been a burden with penalties and being beat. Could be the whole line being beat consistently but I feel like Browning is at fault a lot of the time. I'm not trying to bash the kid, but maybe someone needs to give him a kick in the arse to get him going, or even give him some competition to get him (and the O-LINE) to start playing with some intensity, but I don't see any of them playing with a fire under their asses. If we don't see this, especially against the tough games ahead, it won't be pretty.

I think you are, I think a lot of you are trying to put the blame on Browning which is unfair or unrealistic. I've seen him mess up, but i've also seen make some outstanding blocks. If you are going to criticize someone, criticize Jim Cordle....he's been nothing short of horrible or Mike Adams who isnt good at pass blocking at all.

My take on the situation, you almost have to replace the O-Line coach. To me, its not the players you have a 5* at just about every position on the line these are all able-bodied guys, this shouldnt be an issue. Look at the DLine, they are playing as a cohesive group and at a high level. Do you see that with the O-Line? A good coach maximizes the talent of each individual player!

Also, not being able to get either A.Davis, Barksdale, Long, Jenkins, Martinez, is killing us

Browning has been one of the most consistent linemen this season. Might actually have been our second best linemen so far this year behind Boren. He had a bad game. People need to realize that just because some dimwit TV announcer sees one replay where Browning messes up and comments on it doesn't mean that he "sucks."

I give Bryant much props for getting better since last year. The move to guard has done wonders for him.

Watched the game again....wow we really played bad and as they say it starts up front.

They made Purdue's front 4 look like the Steel Curtain....

Effort, Intensity, smarts, team work??????

Quite a few have picked on TP and he definitely has got to take responsibility for his poor play but these guys were really outplayed all game. The O-line played like they were pissed at Pryor.

Lots of room for improvement.

I disagree. Overall Browning has been one of the bright spots on the line due to his improvement from last year.

I thought his holding on Saine's run yesterday was discreet and effective. Unfortunately it didn't go unnoticed by the officials. 9 times out of 10 I think it does.

Oh I agree that Holding call on Saine's TD run was kind of rubbish, as I didn't see much of a hold. But he has been victim of the False Start more than his fair share this year. That's why I'm so freaking frustrated. Not just with Browning but with the whole OLine not playing with much intensity if any.

To be sure, the OL had a bad game. In addition, Jake Ballard sometimes has a tough time stopping pass rushers who line up wide to his right. While TP might be the whipping boy for many fans in this loss to Purdue, this was clearly a team loss to the extent that the OL often did a poor job of protecting their QB no matter where he tried to set up for a pass.

To be fair (and perhaps controversial), the strength of the OL has not been a hallmark of the Tressel era. Of the approximately 45 offensive linemen (tackle, guard & center) in the NFL from Big Ten schools, only 4 are from tOSU and only two of those are Tressel-coached. While tOSU has more players in the NFL than any other B10 school, few are OL.

Admittedly, putting a player in the League is not the proper measuring stick to evaluate a player's effectiveness in college; however, it can be useful for making comparisons to other teams.

We can endlessly speculate about toughness and execution, but that may not be the root of the issue. After considering the struggles of the OL the last few years (yes, there have been some bright spots), I think it is reasonable to ask a pair of questions. First, are Coach Tressel and his staff consistently recruiting better OL talent than most B10 teams? And second, are Coach Tressel and his staff doing a better job at developing OL talent than their B10 peers?

I'm not pushing the panic button because of one bad game. My concerns about the OL have been percolating for several years.

I have been very disappointed with the play of the offensive line this season, especially against the blitz. Pryor deserves some of the blame for the bad play, but it all starts up front. They aren't giving him much of a chance to succeed.

It took me a while to get to this point, but I really think that Bollman has run his course as offensive line coach. I understand that he probably knows technique and X's and O's better than most people in his profession; he didn't get to be a coach at OSU by being an idiot. That being said, I see no fire from this unit. Compare them to the defensive line for example. Our D line plays with an attitude. It seems like the O line plays too passive, it's been that way for a while now. Something isn't clicking with them, so I think it could be time to bring in younger, more energetic guy and try to light a fire under their asses.

I may be way off base here, but the writing is on the wall. It has been for some time. We have had the skilled players offensively to be great, we recruit highly ranked guys on the line. Yet time and time again we are talking about so-and-so being a bust, or so-and-so playing bad. I have not seen a dominating offensive lineman at OSU since Mangold.

If you ask me, a good offensive line can cure a lot of what ails you offensively. Just as a great d line can do as well. If we are going to pinpoint the most important thing that needs to get better, it's our offensive line.....especially with their pass blocking.

Is it time to make a change from a coaching standpoint on the offensive line? I think it could be. That being said, will this ever happen? Could an internal move be effective? What are the options here?
