2009 tOSU Offense Discussion

no offense to anyone, but it's not a given that Bollman is leaving. Sounds more and more like wishful thinking than anything. My biggest problem with our OL has always been the recruiting philosophy. If a kid's development isn't as far along as we need our OL has suffered. Been going on for years. We need more bodies IMO, we need options. It gives more incentive for kids to work on their technique and to perform in games if someone is pushing them to get PT.

It may be wishful think but what are the chances Bollman takes a step back and Hazell becomes the OC? Not necessarily in name but in who is actually calling the plays? Hazell is already getting more responsibilities but what are his actual chances of getting much more in the off-season? Or even as the season goes on?

I watched the highlights of Vince Young's first two years at Texas in the link Jwins posted in TP's thread...

And what stood out to me the most was the downfield blocking by his WR's. When VY went outside on teams his WR's were either flat putting guys on their asses or driving them to the sidelines, to the point where VY just had to run.

I haven't really paid much attention to the WR blocking outside of when it's been obvious, because I've mostly been watching Pryor, so how would you guys say our WR's have been blocking on the permiter?

Speaking of Duane Long's posts. I am really agreeing with him the last few days.

To be a champion you have to beat champions. We don't beat championship programs, and we know why. That is at the center of all this. We are not competitive because of the offense and Jim Tressel is the only man in the sport of football who still thinks he can win with this offense. Often there is no particular thing to focus on as to why a program starts to lose. We can see what the problem is.

Great point in my opinion. This offense is clearly not working.

When it is something that has been said thousands of times by fans, writers and barely coherent drunks, I'm not sure it qualifies as a great point. It's more like shooting fish in a barrel.

I find his last two points to be pretty flawed.

1) I'm not sure when last minute losses became synonymous with not competing, but I have a suspicion that it began after January 07.

2) often programs start to lose with nothing to focus on? Where does this take place? Losing brings out an avalanche of criticism, and its particularly heavy in areas that have been dumped on before.

I've seen lots of teams fall apart, but I've never seen them do so while everybody just shrugs their shoulders unable to spot the problem(s)

Well just to make clear my "some people" statement was not referring to you. I've read many of your posts before and you know football.

What we used to do on my team was flex TE's out to the boundary to block for the bubble screen. Much higher success rate. I think the success rate jumped like 45%. I ran numbers for my alma mater post graduation (thought I might become a coach a while ago).

That would be a great way to utilize Stoney...he is already a WR/TE type anyways, so at least it would be more ambiguous than sticking Ballard out there. Plus with bigger receivers like Posey and Carter, it should work if practiced.

I hope that's not the case...I'm with Duane on this one, we need to aggresively pursue a succesful OC from a different program and be willing to pay them. The talent we have had under his regime has been second to non and we continue to underperform. It can't be any more obvious that the offense under Bollman/Tressel will not produce results. Getting a recognized OC from a different program will force Tressel to give up much of the play calling duties and philosophy. I love Tressel and you will likely NEVER see me saying that he should go or even hinting at it...he is a great head coach, but he just isn't a good offensive coach. Let someone else take the reigns.

LSU won a championship running a basic, pro-style offense, and Alabama is doing the same thing right now. Difference is they had and have really good offensive lines. That my friends is the problem, not TP. That Bama QB is not very goob nor was Matt Flynn. Pryor almost NEVER has time to set his feet and step into a throw, and when he does have time he is so used to being pressured that he still throws off balance. Things will get better though...

We don't even necessarily need a successful OC from a different program... Greg Davis has had a lot of success at Texas and he's been Mack Brown's right hand man since he was at North Carolina.

I agree with alot you're saying but JT would quit before handing over the reigns to someone. It's not worth it to him.

I have heard this and read this before and I always end up asking myself why? Why would JT quit before handing over OC duties to someone else?
