Spring Wrap up - The Defense
By John Porentas

The Buckeyes were looking for replacements for starting linebackers James Laurinaitis and Marcus Freeman and defensive backs Donald Washington and Malcolm Jenkins this spring. The biggest problem the defensive coaching staff had in making those replacements was not finding players to step up, but choosing from the many players that actually did.

My .02:

The breakdowns of the individual positions are well documented. Front 4 is the strength, I think the LB's can easily be replaced and the safties are strong, its just the corners and getting the unit to jell as a whole.

My concern for 2009 is that the young corners make Heacock go back to the rush 3 drop 8 style of 2006/2007. I think this DL can be very good but it takes a special kind of defense to make a living doing that and I'm not sure this edition is going to quite be in that class. On the plus side of the ledger, not many opponents aside from probably the Bowl game and PSU seem to have the QB and offensive weapons to make us pay for that style of D.

Not that I think USC will be short on offense this year, but can you name one returning starter other than Joe McKnight? I know USC is never short of talent, but (and correct me if I'm wrong) they're going to have a lot of new personnel this year.

Stanley Havili, and Damien Williams accounted for 3 TD's last year....... Besides McKnight's 12 for 120?? night.

they return their top 4 RBS, entire offensive line, starting WRs and TE.

They do replace Sanchez, but i believe his game against us last year was only his 2nd start.....they always reload at QB.

bottom line is their offense will be very talented, deep and experienced

No no, I meant point taken. I'm aware that they return the entire offensive line and most (all?) of their receiving corps. I just couldn't name any of them, whereas you can. I'm not sure USC's offense will be better this year than last, but that doesn't mean they won't be good. They're almost certainly going to be better than Penn State.

McKnight scares me a lot. Ive been spending a lot of time at WeAreSC, and have a pretty good grasp on what they have and what they think. They believe that their run game will be dominate, and are pretty confident in a win.
