2009 Polls - Regular and Pre-Season

there were 5 or 6 that didn't vote Ohio State in the AP poll at all.

Honestly I think being 18 in the AP and 17 in the coaches poll is beyond generous right now.

I think at 7 they were too high, so maybe they should be about 19-20. But dropping 11 is pretty far and dropping them 19 spots and out of the polls for losing by 9 points to an unranked Purdue with the only other loss by 3 to #3 USC would be crazy. USC almost lost to OSU and lost by 3 points to unranked Wash. in back to back weeks and didn't leave the top ten if I remember right.

You're remembering wrong. USC dropped to 12 after the Washington game. Ohio STate, conversely, dropped from 11 to 13 that week.

Ohio State has the talent to be a top 10 team, but they lack the consistency to remain there.

Until the offense shows more of a life, the defense is going to continually be hung out to dry. I don't care if Ohio State has a top 10 defense (and they do), but they just CAN'T be on the field for 40+ minutes per game. At some point this was going to be factored into the polls win or lose, it just took a loss for the adjustment to occur.

Ok I figured USC was 10th after Wash...

Oh well. I guess to be in the polls at all is good enough for the way they have been playing and how fickle people can vote. Of course I can't help but wonder how well the offense would have played if they hadn't had the TOs, especially the one right at the start.

EDIT - Iowa pulls within 21 points of taking the #4 spot. Weird that USC is behind us (even if it is only by a point). Nice to see another Big Ten team in the top 25

If you look at this graph of the votes, you can see at least four groups of teams. The top 3, then 8 teams waiting in the wings, then 4 teams who now are playing for a good bowl game (headed up by Ohio State), then one or two groups looking for a Jan 1 bowl. If Ohio State beats Penn State and Iowa, conceivably they could be ranked as high as #6.

Nice graph. The next two games will be huge. If we lose one I think we could see outside the Top 25 for the first time in a little bit. Although we win both we wil be sitting in a very nice position.

If we lose one, it'll be to a top 10 team, or to Michigan after we beat two top 10 teams. I think it'll take two losses to drops us out of the top 25.

I guess it depends a lot on how we lose. Get blown out by Penn State and we probably would drop out of the Top 25. That said, I don't think that will happen.

The graph really shows differences in the teams (i.e., the drops between positions) that are not reflected in the ranking numbers. I think we climb into the the next group up with a win this week.
