2009 Official Injury Thread

ok we have every player thread just about with every hang nail, bumped up knee and what not. maybe we can have a thread that is generally updated with injuries to make this a tad easier for viewing and massively more complicated and duplicated for posting?

Kick scrimmage highlights (Blogging the Buckeyes)
We did not get a chance to chat with coach Jim Tressel, so we got no official injury updates. But sitting out with apparent injuries were:
OL Justin Boren (in shoulder pads and shorts, a simple wrap on his right knee).
LB Austin Spitler (not in pads)
RB Jamaal Berry (shoulder pads, shorts)
TE Jake Stoneburner (shoulder pads, shorts)
DB Zach Domicone and DE Melvin Fellows also were in shoulder pads and shorts.
During practice, LB Ross Homan went down and trainers came out for a few minutes, but he walked off the field under his own power. He looked a little wobbly, hard to tell what happened.

Great idea for a thread. It should save a lot of people a lot of time, looking for this kind of info.

So don't take it personally when I say I hate this thread. Worst thread ever. This thread can suck my dead dog's left nut. Fuck this thread. Seriously. I hope this thread is really fucking short. Did I say Worst Thread Ever?

can we ask someone to "own this thread" for awhile (unless the injury bug bites-then well vote them out). goal for the thread will be one person to do an end of the day "full update" so we can touch base in one place...

Injured Buckeyes: Several players sat out practice, though as they stood or worked out on the sidelines, none of their injuries looked too serious.

Linebacker Austin Spitler (calf strain), guard Boren (knee), running back Jaamal Berry, tight end Jake Stoneburner, defensive back Zach Domicone and defensive end Melvin Fellows all stayed out of the main drills.

Then starting linebacker Ross Homan went down with what appeared to be a minor left knee injury during practice, and backup middle linebacker Storm Klein missed much of practice as well while getting worked on by the training staff. Again, nothing appeared serious, as Homan was walking around on his own after he limped off the field.

Still, all that linebacking depth wasn't very deep Wednesday, with four of the top eight linebackers (Tyler Moeller is out of the year) missing for this practice. As a result, the first-team linebackers were Brian Rolle in the middle, flanked by Andrew Sweat and Etienne Sabino. The second team, at least for one drill, included freshman Jordan Whiting and walk-on Tony Jackson.

Bob Hunter commentary: Nagging thoughts on OSU's injuries
Sunday, August 23, 2009
By Bob Hunter

While players, trainers and coaches closed in around a prone Cameron Heyward, the small crowd of family members and reporters in Ohio Stadium might been watching a silent movie.

The hushed Horseshoe resembled a massive mausoleum yesterday. All eyes were on the two-year starter at defensive end, a man who had sacked quarterback Terrelle Pryor on consecutive plays earlier in Ohio State's jersey scrimmage. Heyward wore a pained expression that might spread faster than the swine flu among fans if he is out more than a few days.

"Cam is a monster," defensive tackle Doug Worthington said. "He will brush that off and ice it for a few days. Cam will be out there Monday running around. It's scary to see (anybody) go down. We all take our helmets off and say a quick prayer. I didn't know the severity of the injury, but I know Cam is a tough guy and he'll be all right and be back very soon."

And if he isn't? None of the Buckeyes will say this, but this is one of the last things you want with the season opener in less than two weeks and a make-or-break game seven days later.

Even if he just "rolled an ankle" as coach Jim Tressel said, will Heyward -- the real Heyward -- be ready for Southern California in three weeks? While the 287-pound junior watched the rest of scrimmage with an ice bag the size of Rhode Island on his right ankle, the names of the dearly departed came quickly to mind -- linebackers James Laurinaitis and Marcus Freeman and cornerbacks Malcolm Jenkins and Donald Washington to the NFL, linebacker Tyler Moeller out for the season because of a head injury, linebacker Austin Spitler out for now because of a calf injury. Now Heyward, out until Monday or, uh, when?

At some point, this has to hurt doesn't it?

It would seem so, but the Buckeyes haven't reached that point yet. The defense was dominant for much of the scrimmage, just more so when Heyward was in there. No doubt Ohio State is better positioned than most schools to overcome attrition by injury.

The tired thought that a lot of Ohio State subs could start elsewhere mostly is true.

The backups might not be as good as the starters, but at a school that wins as often as Ohio State does, they're all top recruits and usually pretty good.

Injury report:

--DE Cameron Heyward, who rolled his right ankle in the jersey scrimmage Saturday, wore a protective boot tonight. Tressel said he thought he'd be OK for the opener on Sept. 5.

-- LG Justin Boren was in full pads tonight and did some individual drills. That's a very positive sign that he will be fine by next week.

-- Others in pads but who did not participate in the full practice:

TE Jake Stoneburner (lower leg or foot injury; Tressel sounded a bit iffy on the chances of him returning soon).

LB Austin Spitler (calf, no concern from Tressel)

First, the injury front, minus Boren:

-- DE Cameron Heyward dressed, but only participated in individual drills. He no longer wore the walking boot he had on his sprained right ankle Monday, but rather had some extra tape and a soft pad on. Like Boren, it appears he should be available for the opener.

-- A few new bodies on the "did not practice" report today: TE Jake Ballard and S Ohrian Johnson.

-- The rest of the DNPs: RB Jaamal Berry, TE Jake Stoneburner, DE Lawrence Wilson, CB Travis Howard (looked like a right ankle), LB Austin Spitler, S Aaron Gant, S Zach Domicone, WR James Jackson, DE Melvin Fellows and K Devin Barclay.

-- Spitler still not doing even individual drills leads me to believe he might be more "iffy" for next week than Heyward.

-- LB Storm Klein looked to tweak his right ankle during practice. He got taped up, tried to go back out, but soon was sitting again. Certainly nothing serious.

Exhale....Boren is back (Blogging the Buckeyes)

Latest on the injury front

Along with Boren, Flash Thomas was another player who returned to practice Wednesday after missing the jersey scrimmage and open practice with an injury. Thomas worked with the second group during 7-on-7s and had a very nice grab on a ball thrown by Bauserman.

Some other Buckeyes were not as fortunate, however, as starters Jake Ballard, Austin Spitler and Cameron Heyward all missed practice on Wednesday. After suffering a high ankle injury in the jersey scrimmage, Heyward was already out of his boot, but he did have a splint on his right ankle. Ballard and Spitler were dragging some weights around off to the side while Heyward and Lawrence Wilson used the bikes. Wilson seemed to be in good spirits but you have to wonder how much he will be able to help the Buckeyes this season, especially early on, if he isn?t even back in live practice yet.

Jake Stoneburner did individual drills but did spent the scrimmage portion of practice stretching on the side. With both Jake?s out, freshman Reid Fragel was the first-team tight end. Tailback Jaamal Berry also did not go in the afternoon, as he has been limited to one practice a day. Others who did not practice include safeties Orhian Johnson, Aaron Gant and Zach Domicone along with corner Travis Howard and kicker Devin Barclay.

From today's presser.

Official.site

We're pretty healthy. We'll be close to full speed ahead. We've got, I think, five or six or seven guys that, for one reason or the other, perhaps doghouse reasons or injury reasons or whatever won't be with us, but really coming off a tough training camp, I feel pretty good. In fact, I even show that I would be accurate in not -- I even highlighted them on my personnel sheet here, of course you know Tyler Moeller, you know, won't be with us all season and that's -- you wish you had a guy like that. It's been good. He came back to town the last couple days and he's doing great and progressing well and there's no question in our minds that he's going to be back playing for us shortly after the new year and into spring practice and so forth.

Melvin Fellows will probably miss a little bit of time. Mike Adams, Orhian Johnson, Travis Howard, Jermale Martin won't be with us probably on Saturday, but outside of that, even some of the guys that as you've been out of practice and so forth that haven't looked like they were full speed seemed like yesterday and in today's report seemed like they're going to be full speed with us. So to have a good, tough training camp and be relatively in good stead, we feel good about that. It's going to be a nice, hot day. We're going to need to make sure we have lots of folks.
