Sad to see the end of Federov's NHL career. All-time great.

Eh, Fedorov was definitely one of the most skilled players in the last 20 or so years, but to me, he never showed the clutch mentality to be considered one of the all-time greats. He could pour in 5 goals in a 5-1 win over a chump team, but when his team was down by one in the final minute, he was rarely the go-to guy. I'm thinking only of his Red Wings years. Stevie Y was obviously the man in clutch situations, but I seem to remember more big play goals coming from guys like Lidstrom, Shanny, Draper, McCarty, or Maltby, than Fedorov. I honestly can't remember an instance when he made the big play that stole an important game for his team, perhaps one of the resident Wings fans can jog my memory. I always considered him the type of player who shined when he could get by on skill alone, but disappeared when the going got tough. I'd put him a notch above Kariya, but just below Selanne or Jagr. Probably a hall of famer, depending on the strength of his class, but I don't see him getting his number retired.

He was averaging a point per game in the playoffs before this season. Not sure how many of those could be considered clutch, but I'm sure there were a few. 176 playoff points in 183 games. Have to think that 176 points in the playoffs puts him up near the top in all-time playoff points. (EDIT: 14th all-time)

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing because I don't remember his prime years in the playoffs too well. I was about 8. I was watching.. just a little too young to remember performances from individuals not on the Penguins. :p

I always liked Federov. He was my favorite player growing up. It'll be interesting to see how the whole Hossa thing plays out during the playoffs and offseason. Supposedly the team really likes the guy and he is one of their big motivations to win the cup. So depending on how it plays out in the playoffs it'll be interesting to see if they resign him.

Will they have room?

He was down to under 11 minutes of ice time recently. From what I've seen of him, he's been a disappointment (minus a few games). Is he worth $7+ million for them? Their system is great at plugging guys in and getting production.

That's the major issue. He'd have to take a front loaded longterm deal so his hit will be around $5-6 million and we'd also have to let a few guys walk like Samuelsson. From what I've seen he's been decent in the playoffs but not as good as expected. Pretty good defensively but no consistent offense. It'll be interesting to see if we stay with the Flippula Hossa combination even when Datsyuk comes back. So it's basically a combination of how much the team wants him, what kind of a deal will he take to stay, and if we feel we have people ready to step up or can a FA for cheap to fill in for whoever we let walk becuase of the deal.

I don't know where I got that 10-12 minute number. I thought a Wings' fan told me, but I just checked and he's been above 16. He's pretty solid defensively, but he's only scored goals in three playoff games, two of which weren't close. 9 of his 12 playoff points have come in four games.

I think if I were the Wings I'd rather let a team overpay him and save some room for some younger guys coming through the system or get another vet who can be productive for much less. Hossa isn't a necessary piece for the Wings. I'd laugh if he wanted to stay and they didn't sign him. It'd be a slap in the face similar to what he did to the Pens. He could be making more for the Pens and have 7 years in place. Instead, he chose a one-year deal and might be back with a non-contender again next year.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Fedorov wasn't a very impressive player, and definitely fun to watch, but I don't consider him an "all-time great". Think about other hockey players you would consider "all-timers" (probably Gretz, Mario, Howe, Orr, Mess, Roy, etc.), and measure SF against them. Maybe he's on that level in your opinion, but I reserve that distinction for players who were a large part of their team's success. IMO, Fedorov's success was more a product of being on a great team. I'm aware of SF's playoff numbers, but I have to wonder how many of those points came in the early rounds. You also have to consider that SF was on a team that made it to the playoffs in all of his first 13 seasons, and advanced past the first round in 8 of those. SF played in 183 career playoff games (162 with the Wings), it stands to reason that he would be up there in points. For a frame of reference, of the #15-27 playoff scoring leaders, there is only one who played more games than SF (by 1), who was not a defenseman (Bobby Smith). If you take similar players (finesse wingers with speed and skill) from the same era (say, Bure, Mogilny, Selanne), and put them in SF's place, I don't think the Wings' results change much. I think Bure was more important to the 'Nucks than SF was to the Wings, in particular. Would you consider any of those named players "all-time greats" (their numbers are pretty similar). Maybe they are, it depends on how you define it. In Buckeye terms, Archie is without question an all-time great. But what about Keith Byars? Or Robert Smith? There are good arguments both ways.

Back on topic, I expect that the big names that will cause the most action in UFA will be Gaborik and Sundin. The Wild have to weigh how long they think it will take to be a legit contender vs. how much they could get for Gaborik. Of course, MG's desire to stay in a small (not to mention cold as hell) market, on a mediocre team, may be the determining factor. There should be plenty of suitors for MG's services. It may come down to a trade this year, or face trying to offer him enough to turn down a cup contender next year.

I can't believe Sundin is set to make that much money. I'm a fan of his from his Leaf days, but I don't think he's worth much more than half of that. He's going to be hard to move with that contract, unless the 'Nucks eat part of his salary. I'm guessing the front office would be happy to get nearly anything for him, and free up $4-6mil.

I expect 'Bullin and Hossa to change teams, one way or another. Shouldn't be too hard to find takers, they're just not worth it to their respective teams. Hawks may have to take a hit to move 'Bullin.

There are a few older players who will probably be asked to restructure their contracts, get traded as a gun for hire, or may just retire. Niedermayer, Guerin, Hatcher, Rob Blake, Schneider, Tkachuk, Zubov, Lehtinen all fall in to that category. I'd imagine the Avs will try to allow Sakic to retire with the team, unless he wants to be traded for one last shot at the cup.

Yes, I am really bored.

(R) Hossa, Marian ($7,450,000)
(R) Samuelsson, Mikael ($1,200,000)
(G) Conklin, Ty ($750,000)
(D) Chris Chelios ($750,000)
(R) McCarty, Darren ($575,000)
(R) Haydar, Darren ($525,000)
(R) Kopecky, Tomas ($525,000)
(R) Downey, Aaron ($500,000)

Out of that list the only ones that come back are Kopecky and maybe Conklin.

Hossa is as good as gone, Chelios won't be back, McCarty is a two way contract so he likely won't be back as is Downey.

Samuelsson has made himself some money this postseason and someone will overpay for him this year.

could be. but how many of those guys had the two way, defensive game of feds? in his prime he could lock any pivot down and play at ppg. i think with his speed he is also mislabeled often times, hes a decent sized player (6-1 210lbs) though not overly physical he brings more than the burres/selannes of the world at a younder age. he has played the last few years with major elbow issues. im not sure where he ranks personally, my guess is he ends up in toronto though. Not sure anymore - in a perfect world, yes he's done and more importantly yes he knows it and it's time to go out near the top or at the top.

Draper is the interesting one IMO. He's had an injury riddled year too.
