ProFootballTalk.com is making an issue of Beanie's 40 time, but no mention of any of the other first-round backs, especially Moreno.

PFT is one of my favorite sites, not sure why they're making a big deal about the fastest time of the top three backs?

McShay made a rare good point on the evening 6:00pm sunday sports center.
He said alot of scouts and combine gurus might be spoiled because the Top 5 backs taken last year all ran sub 4.5 40's at the combine last year.

He said that should be considered the exception and not the rule - so expectations were high for everyone and thus criticism seems over the top.

all of the times seem down this year....is it a new surface maybe??

The difference is pretty major.

Agreed - and I think they were unusually hard on Gholston.

It's quite commonplace to assume that the hardest positions to learn in the NFL are Cornerback and Quarterback, and maybe they are.
But defensive end can't be that far behind. Those kids are coming and playing against men 28-35 years old who are bigger and stronger than they've ever faced. It's unrealistic for them to assume they'll flourish immediately.

Not only that, but Gholston was forced to change positions to play OLB for the NYJ. The guy changed positions, end of story. Give him a year for pete's sake. (Some) Steelers fans gave Lawrence Timmons a year, and he shined this year.

I forgot they had a new dome. Even a minor difference can add/subtract time from 40's.

I'd be willing to bet that has more to do with the slower times than anything.

The RCA Dome had FieldTurf the last 3 or so years of its existence, the same stuff that's in the new Lucas Oil Stadium.

But I suppose the surface below the laid out turf could be different, I don't know.

Hmm, that is pretty fascinating...

I guess fans are pretty critical of the combine in terms of evaulating players, but I guess this explains pretty well why the combine is still very very relevant.

I was very shocked at that list.

as Josh said, even though its the same surface, I'm sure it hasn't settled. The more give in the surface, the harder it is to explode on every step.
