Mackey is the first to Unalalkeet. I'll post the standings again after a few guys leave Unalakleet, because that time is more telling than when they arrive at this particular checkpoint.

Mackey has a 5-hour lead out of Unalakleet. Schnuelle rested on the trail and again at the checkpoint, but Mackey took a 7-hour rest at the checkpoint, so the lead is real.

It looks like King and Schnuele have decided to stay together for a while, or at least one of them did.

It's too bad that Mackey has such a big lead, because the next 6 guys are having a real battle for second place, all arriving at Shaktoolik within 22 minutes of each other.

When it comes to the Iditarod, is a really more about the driver or the dogs or the statistical planning. I can remember when Nancy Butcher used to dominate the Iditarod. What would be the comparison between Mackey and Butcher:huh: Maybe they ought to run next year's race without him. That would almost make it fair.

I think the dogs are the most important factor.

You meant to say Susan Butcher (who passed away in 2006). She gave a little talk on a tour I once took in Alaska (I think ScriptOhio has taken the same tour). She gave credit to her lead dog, Granite.

Well of course her first name was Susan:)

The race across the edge of Norton Sound has been brutal, with wind chills of 50 below zero.

Mackey rested over 8 hours after making the leg from Shaktoolik to Koyuk. So far, only Schuelle and Baker have made it into Koyuk. Schnuelle had two lead dogs stop and sit down on him before a third dog led the way across the ice.

Many of Seavey's dogs have diarrhea, Neff is battling pneumonia, and has frostbite on his face.

Mackey is now at White Mountain, taking a mandatory 8-hour stop at that checkpoint before he hits the last 77 miles of trail to Nome. He should finish sometime tomorrow, when the vBet will pay out in time to toss that money at the NCAA vBets.

Former winners Seavey and King had their teams just hit a wall with the 50 below wind chill coming over the ice of Norton Sound. They basically lost a whole day. I'll give them credit - they cared more about their dogs than about fighting for the prize money differences between 2nd and 5th place.

Seavey finally made it to Koyuk, averaging 2.00 mph for the leg. King's time will be even worse. They didn't really go that slow - they stopped at a cabin, and/or turned around and went back to Shaktoolik when the winds were so bad.

Schnuelle and Baker have left Elim, 46 miles from White Mountain. They're only a minute apart, so the battle for second will be close.
