Off-season's starting to pick up. Holliday was dealt yesterday and teams can start signing free agents Thursday.

What do you guys think of the Holliday deal?

Not too sure what Oakland was thinking there. Holliday to me is not much more than a 5 or 6 hitter on a really good team. I'd compare him to a Jayson Werth or a Ryan Church. I think once he gets out of Colorado, the numbers will reflect that.

every Hot Stove is accompanied by one truth......

Scott Boras clients are at the forefront, and Scott Boras pisses every team off.

Not shocking the Red Sox and Angels have quit negoatiating for Texeria due to Boras's tactics.

You must not follow the Rockies.

The guy is easily top 5 hitter in the NL...this past year he was slowed by nagging injuries.

The year previous, he basically willed the Rockies into the WS.

He has gotten votes for the MVP the last three years and won the silver slug three years in a row...

You're right, I dont follow the Rockies. But look at his home/road splits for his career:

Home
.357/.423/.645
1353 ABs, 84 HRs, 307 RBIs

Road
.280/.348/.455
1303 ABs, 44 HRs, 176 RBIs

So the guy has a little more than 2 seasons worth of road games under his belt.

Divide his road stats in two, and you have a .280/22 HR/88 RBI guy.

Granted he plays a lot of games in Chavez Ravine and Petco Park, both great pitchers parks, but I mean come on. Is that a guy a top tier team would have hitting 3 or 4?

Even during 2007, his MVP caliber season, he hit .376/25 HR/82 RBIs at home and .301/11/55 on the road. Project that over a full year at .301/22/110, and it's still not a guy I want hitting 3 or 4 on my team. Add to that, the fact that he's going to a great pitcher's park in Oakland. Not exactly a recipe for success.

Reports: Yankees sign Teixeira
By Tom Singer / MLB.com
Mark Teixeira's Christmas wish has apparently come true.

ESPN.com's Buster Olney reports that the free-agent first baseman has reached agreement with the Yankees on an eight-year contract worth close to $180 million, citing a source involved in the negotiations.

This came on the heels of reports earlier in the day that Teixeira would make a decision today between the Nationals and Red Sox.

Teixeira's stated objective was to have his destination settled before the holiday.

Continued

The Yankees just buy Major league baseball and call it a day:!

Funny thing is they still might not even win their own division. If throwing money at a problem fixed anything, The United States government and the Oakland Raiders would be dynastic right now. How'd that Pavano investment go? Granted, Mark and CC are clearly better than that, but buying postseason wins is a hell of a lot harder than buying regular season wins (right, A-Rod and Barry Bonds?)

Home versus Away

G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI TB BB SO SB CS OBP SLG AVG
79 314 64 101 27 3 21 60 197 52 61 21 3 .428 .627. 322
78 320 37 69 12 2 12 30 121 46 692 .321 .378 .216

I noticed above that there was some disagreement about a good hitters average at home and away. The above statistics are the statistics of Grady Sizemore. The first line are is home statistics while the next line is his away stats. I would bat Grady any day of the week and the #3 hole and have no problems with that. I also consider him a very good hitter but this just makes you wonder.

As good of an all-around player as Grady Sizemore is, if he is your #3 hitter you're not going to win the World Series. Especially in the AL.

While I agree with what you are saying, they even backed up C. C. by signing AJ Burnett. I saw last night on the bottom line that they even offered Manny a three-year deal. I wonder if they will take that off the table. I think the Raiders is a bad example because big Al can never let go. At least George had the brains enough to hand things over to his son. Please don't get me started on the government. I can even go back to the political forum:(

Also, as recently as 2006, Grady did .301/14/37 at home and .280/14/39 on the road. Still a decent dip in average, but comparable stats nonetheless.

My problem with Holliday's splits is that he played in one of the two best hitter's park in the leage (the other being Citizen's Bank). I just wonder what he'll do in a normal park.

I respect your opinion but disagree with you regarding winning the WS with Grady hitting in the #3 hole but that is for an entirely different thread (Cleveland Indians). Sorry to get OT.
