I see what you are saying, but the NCG is a little bit of a different animal. The NCG is a one game playoff where everyone agrees that the winner is crowned champion. Once you are in the NCG, you don't have to worry about the popularity contest anymore.

If that game had happened earlier in the season, I could certainly see why some voters might keep Miami ahead of tOSU in their polls, based on how the game played out. (I personally wouldn't, since I thought that tOSU had them handled throughout most of the game, but that's a different dead horse).

All that said, if BYU gets past Utah and TCU and goes undefeated, I think this victory should be enough to get them into the NCG ahead of any 1-loss BCS teams.

p.s. Oh, and I do see the potential conundrum with that last sentence, if both BYU and OU win out the rest of the season. All I can say to that is that if OU wins out that will make BYU's victory look better making a leapfrog later on more likely.

BYU plays Florida State in a week or two as well...they play a tougher schedule this year than at least 80% of the country.

BYU plays enough good teams to be taken seriously, but I'm not sure I'd go as far as your above quote. They play OU, FSU, TCU & Utah, however all four are at home. They also play Tulane, Col St, UNLV, SDSU, Wyo, New Mex, Air Force.

I'm not sure that's tougher than UM's schedule, which isn't particularly grueling. OU-OSU, FSU-PSU, ND > TCU, MSU - Utah. Then a whole bunch of junk.

Well Colorado State offed Colorado on the road, AFA looks reasonably good again...The MW has about 3 patsies, but it's time they got as much credit as the ACC...at least they can beat FCS schools usually...and Cincinnati + 7. The Big Ten and Pac 10 have some patsies too. It might be a bit much, but let's say as good as 75% of the country then.

1. Florida
2. Texas
3. USC
4. Alabama
- Rewarded for a quality win against a highly ranked opponent.
5. Oklahoma State - Also rewarded, but opponent (Georgia) probably not as strong as Alabama's. They answered a lot of my questions about their own defense and their ability to hold the line against a stout non-Big XII defense.
6. Ohio State - I had to move them down after their performance against Navy. I had planned to move them down more than this, but Oklahoma's loss helped them a bit, as well as perhaps a little homer bias on my part. I just think that right now, they are a better team than the ones I have placed right behind them.
7. California - I caught a bits and pieces of their game against Maryland, and came away very impressed. It wasn't a blockbuster matchup, but still a very solid win against a very solid opponent.
8. Brigham Young - I had them unranked in the preseason - mainly because I hadn't seen them before and they had yet to win a big game against a quality opponent. I was very impressed with the quality of their play even when Oklahoma had Bradford in the game. They may prove otherwise over the coming weeks, but based on what we've seen so far, they've been one of the top teams to start the season.
9. Louisiana State - I wanted to move them down after their performance at Washington. Like Ohio State, other poor performances and losses in the top ten helped them end up higher than I'd initially planned. Washington is a tough place to play a road game, so they get a little extra credit for that - even though the Huskies probably still kinda suck.
10. Georgia Tech
11. Penn State
- I still don't think they're better than Ohio State or a number or the other teams above them. All other things being equal, they will be hurt in my rankings most of the year by their cupcake non-conference sked.
12. Ole Miss
13. Virginia Tech
- A loss is a loss, but you could do a whole lot worse than losing to Alabama. I only dropped them four spots this week.
14. Oklahoma - I hammered Oklahoma in my rankings the same way BYU's defense hammered Oklahoma's QBs. I think that even with A healthy QB & TE they would have a tough time blocking and winning against any of the teams I have ahead of them right now. Attrition is not the only way to move up in my rankings though, so if they show they are better than that in the coming weeks I will move them back up accordingly.
15. Missouri - They seemed to answer a lot of questions against Illinois about the players they lost on offense. I think they're on the inside track to win the Big XII North.
16. Cincinnati - The Bearcats just served notice to the rest of the Big East that they're the team to beat.
17. Oregon State
18. Georgia
- They lost to a high quality opponent, yes. But in the process they also failed to answer any of the nagging questions about their team and the players they lost to the NFL, most notably at QB & RB.
19. Miami (FL) - They move into the rankings with a good win in Tallahassee. The accomplishment is tempered a bit by their relative youth and the typical young player mistakes I saw. They have a tough schedule and plenty of chances to impress me further and move up.
20. Florida State - I came away fairly impressed with the Noles in a losing effort.
21. Texas Christian - The did not play, and I moved them down. I am not exactly comfortable with that fact, but a lot of teams showed me something this week that warranted their placement higher than this slot. I still think TCU will be a good team this year.
22. Clemson
23. Kansas
24. Michigan State
25. Notre Dame

Out: Illinois, Iowa, Oregon. The Illini got pounded by Mizzou. Iowa almost lost to an FCS team, and did it in a way similar to a way the Browns lost a game once. You can't almost lose like the Browns once did and still be considered a good team. Oregon was a mess. Like many others I freely of the Chip Kelly Kool-Aid, and I look like a fool for doing it.

Not in: Boise State, Tennessee, M*ch*g*n.

Boise State looked awful in their own right against that putrid Oregon team. Not worthy of being ranked at all in my opinion. A true Top 25 team would have pounded Oregon mercilessly on the scoreboard when the Ducks didn't even manage a first down until the 3rd quarter.

Tennessee did what they were supposed to do against Western Kentucky. Can they impress against a real team?

Fuck M*ch*g*n.

you've just become my favorite poster on BP.

yeah, I know I ranked Ole Piss higher than LSU, but I've already severed my right hand completely off my arm for being such a smart ass and hitting the "submit reply" button

I understand that view, it's just not how I rank teams. I rank teams based on who I 'consider to be better' and go from there. That's probably why it's good to have many voters, so you can average out different methods of ranking.

If it were more of a decisive victory, that would probably change things more for me, but BYU played "balls out" and OU may have played their worst game of the year, and lost their star player and BYU only managed a one point win on a late game touchdown.

The end result is, on my poll, that OU drops by several spots and BYU goes up a few. But there is not enough evidance to flip-flop them, not yet anyway.

-z

I dropped OU a loong way because of that game.
Their O-Line looked dreadful. Bradford got rocked a few time before finally getting knocked out of the game.

BYU was dominating the game BEFORE Bradford went down.
At halftime, BYU had 245 total yards. OU only had 268 for the entire game.
BYU held the ball for almost 19 minutes in the 1st half.

I don't know how good BYU's defense is supposed to be this year, but I don't think they're the 2000 Baltimore Ravens, yet OU's line made that front 7 look like Ray Lewis and company.

Now, OU has a really shitty line blocking for a back-up QB and their all world tight end is done for the season.

So yeah, I think BYU should be ahead of OU, and won't be shocked in the least if they stay ahead of them all year.

Wish I'd seen this thread earlier! Here's my ballot:

1. Florida
2. Alabama
3. Texas
4. USC
5. Penn State
6. Oklahoma State
7. California
8. Ohio State
9. Virginia Tech
10. BYU
11. Oklahoma
12. Cincinnati
13. LSU
14. Georgia Tech
15. Boise State
16. Utah
17. Mississippi
18. Nebraska
19. Georgia
20. Michigan State
21. North Carolina
22. Miami (FL)
23. Mizzou
24. TCU
25. Auburn

Teams I'm buying right now: Alabama, Penn State, California, Va Tech, Cincinnati, Michigan State, Mizzou, Auburn, Arkansas, Navy

Teams I'm not buying right now: Boise State, Mississippi, Notre Dame, Iowa, South Carolina, the rest of the ACC (excluding also Florida State)

I'm buying Cincinnati BIG time. If they play like they played Monday every week and can win at Oregon State, we will see our first unbeaten Big East team since teams left the conference.

There's always one team every year that seems bi-polar (big wins, big losses). I see Tennessee being that team this year.
