17. Just How Good Is The ACC?

Solid, and getting better.

While the ACC took a bit of a hit in the bowl season with Boston College, the league's runner-up in the title game, losing to Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech getting stomped by LSU in the Chick-fil-A, Miami losing a true road game against Cal, and NC State and Clemson also losing, it was a banner year for a conference that hasn't been able to get over the hump and become the superpower envisioned by the league's head honchos when it raided the Big East for teams.

While the league still isn't the SEC, and probably never will be, and it wasn't as good as the Big 12 last year, a good case could be made that it was the third best conference after a rock-solid group of non-conference wins. Just go right down the list and everyone had a respectable non-conference win on the resume. But there was also a bad loss or two that kept the league from making a run in the argument of 2008?s best conference.

Boston College - Beat Notre Dame, lost to Vanderbilt

Clemson - Beat South Carolina, lost to Alabama and Nebraska

Duke - Beat Vanderbilt, lost to Northwestern

Florida State - Beat Colorado and Wisconsin, lost to Florida

Georgia Tech - Beat Mississippi State and Georgia, lost to LSU

Maryland - Beat Cal, lost to Middle Tennessee

Miami Beat Texas A&M, lost to Florida and Cal

North Carolina - Beat Rutgers, Connecticut, and Notre Dame, lost to West Virginia

NC State - Beat East Carolina (who was unbeaten and the hot team at the time), lost to South Carolina, South Florida, and Rutgers

Virginia - Beat East Carolina, lost to USC and Connecticut

Virginia Tech - Beat Nebraska (at Nebraska) and Cincinnati, lost to East Carolina

Wake Forest - Beat Baylor, Ole Miss and Navy (in the bowl), lost to Navy (in the regular season)

While that might not seem all that impressive, with every good win balanced out by an equally decent loss, try doing that with any other conference. No other league was able to represent itself quite as well in the grinding, middle-of-the-pack games, but that's not what the ACC is looking for. It wants to be among the elite of the elite, at least to the point to where it can get a second team into the BCS on a regular basis.

A brief look at each ACC team, after a coaches teleconference.

ACC's two new coaches aren't all that new

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- It didn't take long for the Atlantic Coast Conference's two new coaches to get comfortable with their new jobs.
Frank Spaziani already knew the ins and outs of Boston College's program, and Dabo Swinney certainly didn't need any help finding his way around Clemson.

Both longtime assistants and former interim coaches were promoted to head jobs this offseason, and among their top priorities during spring practice were taking lead roles and injecting their personalities into the programs.

A brief look at each team's spring game.

CFN

Florida State
Short-handed throughout the spring, the defense rose up in the Garnet & Gold game, forcing seven turnovers for a 39-27 Gold victory. S Jamie Robinson had a pair of interceptions, and his teammates recovered five fumbles for a measure of redemption against the Garnet. On one of those fumbles, LB Nigel Bradham returned it 45 yards for a touchdown. Starting QB Christian Ponder generally had a rough day, going 10-of-19 for 118 yards, a touchdown, and those two picks. On defense, end Justin Mincey played well, making a team-high five stops and 2.5 tackles for loss.

Miami
Using a unique scoring system designed by the coaching staff, the Miami offense spanked the defense, 52-3, racking up more than 400 yards of total offense. The hero on the ground was junior Damien Berry, a converted safety, who rushed 114 yards, including a 54-yard touchdown burst. Sophomore Jacory Harris solidified his spot as the starting quarterback, going 9-of-16 passes for 141 yards on five possessions. Sophomore Thearon Collier was the preferred target of Harris and Taylor Cook, making a game-high five grabs for 65 yards.

Virginia Tech
April 25 - The Maroon-White game had a regular season feel to it, as Antoine Hopkins returned a fumble for the decisive touchdown, and the Maroon D stuffed QB Tyrod Taylor inside the 5 on the final play for a 13-7 win. Taylor finished 16-of-33 for 188 yards and a touchdown, but was upstaged on offense by young RB Ryan Williams. The exciting redshirt freshman had a game-high 86 yards on 10 carries, while catching two receptions for 66 yards and a score. Hopkins, another second-year freshman, was the hero on defense, adding five tackles and two sacks to his game-changing score.

ACC adopts 72-player limit for conference road games

AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. -- The Atlantic Coast Conference has voted to cap football travel squads for league games, a cost-cutting measure that should save schools thousands each year.

ACC athletic directors passed the proposal Wednesday at the conference's annual spring meetings. It goes into effect this fall.

Other Bowl Championship Series conferences have a 72-man limit on travel rosters. The ACC limited its title game teams to 72 players, but previously had no cap on the number of athletes who could travel and dress for league games.

This article says: Don't sleep on Wake.

SI.com

Don't forget about Wake, and don't forget about QB Riley Skinner

Riley Skinner has lined up under center for the start of 37 Wake Forest games. When Skinner showed up in Winston-Salem as a freshman, Wake's latest recruits were in middle school. Still, Skinner can't quite come to grips with the fact that he's now officially the old guy on campus.

Whether he believes it or not, more than 165 players will have joined the four-year starting quarterback on the roster from the time he enrolled in 2005 to when he calls his first play this Sept. 5 against Baylor. In the world of college football, that makes Skinner a grizzled veteran.

"I guess now I'm probably the oldest I can get, a fifth-year senior on the field," Skinner said. "I've always looked up to some of these seniors for leadership. ... It's just weird to know that I'm that guy the team will look to now."

Skinner isn't the only remnant from Wake's surprise 2006 Orange Bowl team, but of the 14 remaining from that roster he's logged the most playing time. After taking snaps during the most successful three-year period in Demon Deacons' history (starting 26 of their 28 wins), he's become the team's unquestioned leader. What's more, in his final season Skinner has the chance to cap that recent success by going down as the most accurate passer in ACC history.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pounder enters 2009 with a .673 completion percentage (639-of-949), topping the career .670 record Virginia's Matt Schaub set. That rate puts Skinner in line with the last two Heisman Trophy winners (Sam Bradford boasts a .685 career percentage, while Tim Tebow sits at .657) while his 25 interceptions in 949 attempts are the fewest among all active players with at least 700 career passes. His 26-11 record as a starter gives him the second highest wins total (along with South Florida's Matt Grothe) among active players behind Texas' Colt McCoy (32).

BC's QB this season will have zero game experience, as Davis will be transferring after he was suspended for academic reasons.

Projected starter Davis leaving BC

BOSTON (AP) -- Boston College quarterback Dominique Davis is transferring after his academic suspension. The school said Tuesday he has not decided where he will go.

The Eagles are coming off a 9-5 season and Davis was projected to start this fall. He started the last three games as a redshirt freshman following an injury to senior Chris Crane.

In six games, Davis completed 63 of 138 passes for 741 yards. He threw for six touchdowns and four interceptions.
Davis led a 70-yard drive in the final minutes of a 24-21 comeback win over Wake Forest. He completed passes of 36 and 21 yards before scoring on a 1-yard run with 1:12 left.

Alabama (Atlanta) What is that Division V:sad2:

That's the location of the game - not a branch of FreeTextbooksU. :wink2:

Gotta give VT some credit for scheduling Nebraska and Alabama both in the same season - they might end up wishing they played the 2004 or 2007 versions of those teams.
