2009-2010 Ohio State Fencing Season

ORD_Buckeye

Wrong glass, Sir.
Midwest Conference championships today. Buckeyes, despite being ranked 3rd in the nation for the men and 6th for the women, haven't looked quite as dominating as in recent years. Nonetheless, championship should come down to us and the loathesome domers.

Buckeye Fencers Ready For Midwest Championships

OHIO STATE VS. NOTRE DAME
The Midwest Conference championships will renew the rivalry between the Buckeyes and the Fighting Irish. The two perennial powers have combined to win three of the last six national championships, with Ohio State topping third-place Notre Dame by 41 points in 2004, Notre Dame edging the Buckeyes by two points in 2005 and Ohio State claiming the 2008 title by 10 points over the Fighting Irish. Neither team has finished outside of the Top 5 at the national championships since 2002. Last season the Irish and the Buckeyes finished second and third, respectively.

Buckeyes Finish Second at MFC Championships

The Ohio State men's and women's fencing team returned from the Midwest Fencing Conference (MFC) Championships after earning runner-up finishes in both men's and women's divisions, falling in both to regional rival and host Notre Dame. The overall title was the first for the Irish since 2002, breaking the Buckeyes' seven-year reign at the top of the MFC standings.

NCAA regional qualifying matches up next in Evanston, then NCAA championships. Hopefully, we can pound the domers in the rematch.

Ohio State Competes in NCAA Midwest Regional Qualifier

The Ohio State men's and women's fencing squads traveled to the Northwestern campus in Evanston, Ill., last weekend to compete in the 2010 NCAA Midwest Regional. The Buckeyes showed their prowess on the strips, claiming 12 Top 5 finishes in the event, putting the Scarlet and Gray in good shape for the NCAA Championships March 25-28 in Boston, Mass.

With a full complement of 12 athletes headed to the NCAAs, we should be looking at no worse than another top 5 finish. Top 3 is very realistic, with an outside shot at our 3rd national championship in the last 6 years.

Ohio State in 7th at the NCAA Championships. This, however is prior to the start of men's competition today. The men have been significantly stronger this year, so we'll see. Another NC is probably out of the question, but we should climb into another top 5 finish.

Margarita Tschomakova, who was named a first-team All-America.

Buckeyes managed to claw their way up to a 4th place finish over the weekend, making it 2 national championships and 7 top 5 finishes in the last 7 years. Penn State won their second consecutive national championship.
