OSU suspends two on women's team: The Buckeyes women's basketball team announced it was suspending two of its seniors, including two-time Big Ten defensive player of the year Shavelle Little, for the first three games of the season.

The suspensions, announced Wednesday night by coach Jim Foster, are a result of what a university statement termed ?an NCAA secondary rules violation.?

Little and Cherise Daniel will be permitted to practice with the team during the suspension. Little has led the team in steals each of the last two seasons. Daniel, also a guard, has appeared in 52 games off the bench in her first three seasons.

The Buckeyes, five-time defending Big Ten champions, open their season on Friday at home against Eastern Illinois in the opening round of the Women?s NIT.

St. Mary star Ellerbe picks Ohio State
Thursday, November 12, 2009

Basketball wasn?t always this easy for St. Mary?s senior Martina Ellerbe.

In fact, her first experience on an elementary school team was downright discouraging.

"I was like, ?Oh, I?m just going to join because I?m tall,? " said the 6-foot-2 Ellerbe. "And I would just sit on the bench and then go home and cry because I couldn?t get in."

Ellerbe doesn?t spend much time on the bench anymore. And her play on the court earned her a scholarship to play basketball at Ohio State. She signed her National Letter of Intent on Wednesday.

Ellerbe chose Ohio State over Miami, Georgetown, West Virginia, Harvard, Princeton and Yale.

"You know how sometimes you get the feeling," Ellerbe said. "Well I got the feeling when I went there [on a visit]. Everything was just perfect."

Ellerbe, a Teaneck native, liked the facilities at Ohio State ? she said the 19,000-seat Schottenstein Center, where Buckeyes play their home games, is "like Madison Square Garden."

But she was also impressed by the academic support program. Ellerbe plans on studying pre-med.

Ellerbe is a center at St. Mary and reached the 1,000-point milestone last season. At Ohio State, she?ll play small forward. The last three years she has been playing club basketball for the Bronx-based New York Guachos, where she got some valuable perimeter experience last off-season.

Ellerbe had the chance to travel with the Gauchos and hone her work ethic.

It was in middle school where Ellerbe, not content to sit the bench, started putting in extra time on the basketball court.

"I was always at practice and doing things other kids weren?t doing," Ellerbe said. "I guess it started to work because all the sudden I was in the game and I was scoring points."

Signing with Ohio State proves how hard Ellerbe has worked, and just how far she has come since those early days on the bench.

"Starting out I was never good or anything," Ellerbe said. "I never thought I would be in the position that I?m in now."

Scullion signs with Ohio State
Salem senior commits to hoops with the Buckeyes for fall of 2010, looking forward to Lady Quakers’ season
By MICHAEL S. BURICH & TONY MALUSO, Staff Writers
POSTED: November 11, 2009

SALEM - Salem senior Amy Scullion has been at the pinnacle of the area sporting scene for her entire high school career and now she'll try her hand at making it big on the national scene.

Scullion signed a national letter-of-intent to continue her academic and basketball careers at The Ohio State University on Wednesday. Picking a college is normally one of the toughest decisions in a high school kid's life, but for Scullion the decision was rather easy.

"It's Ohio State," Scullion said. "The tradition, the atmosphere, it's all something that I want to be a part of and becoming a Buckeye is something I really wanted to be."

Helping make the decision even easier was the fact that Scullion, who admittedly is real close to her family, will be able to make the short drive to Columbus to watch her play, and that her older sister Katie, is already enrolled at Ohio State.

Also playing a huge role in getting Scullion officially to Columbus was Ohio State head coach Jim Foster.

"Coach Foster is a great guy and I felt really comfortable with him," Scullion said. "He's a person that I'd want to spend the next four years of my life with. Not only can he help me on the court but he can really teach me things off the court as well."

Coming into her final prep basketball season she is ranked as the No. 9 small forward in the country in the 2010 recruiting class by Scouts, Inc. The same scouting service has her ranked as the No. 44 overall best player in the 2010 class.

As a junior she was the Salem News and Morning Journal's co-player of the year along with being named a third-team Div. II All-Ohian. She led the Quakers to a 19-5 record as a junior along with a 13th-place state ranking, and a second straight berth in the Div. II district final.

She averaged a team-high 17.1 points, 9.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists a game, while shooting 48 percent from the field and 75-percent from the foul line.

With her in the lineup over these last three seasons, the Quakers are 46-15 - a winning mark of 75 percent.

However, Scullion still feels her work isn't done at Salem.

"I'm very excited about the team we have this year," Scullion said. "I think we have a chance to make it a long way this year especially now that Canfield is out of our district. If we could get a state title before I graduate, it would make my high school career complete."

The hardest part of Scullion deciding her future was whether to follow the path of basketball or volleyball.

On the volleyball court, where she is well-known throughout the country, Scullion just completed yet another All-Ohio campagain in leading the Quakers to a Div. II regional berth.

Well, one "suspension" game out of the way. OSU 91-EIU 68.

Both teams played well. FG%, OSU 44%....EIU 40%. I think we missed Shavelle a little here.

The game swung on rebounds.....OSU 59...EIU 31.

I believe that the "really" good news from the first game is what happened at the 4 position. Star Allen's production at the 4 ( 11 points and 8 rebounds per game) has to be replaced this year by others.

Well, in the first game of the season, the "others" seem to be;

Sarah Schulze.......18 points and 9 rebounds.

Andrea Walker.......10 points and 9 rebounds.

Sarah had a fabulous game playing all of her 17 minutes at the 4, shooting 63% from the floor (3 of 6 from behind the arc) and dominating the boards.

Andrea doesn't shoot 3's, but had the better floor game shooting 80% and also dominating the boards. Drea played many of her 13 minutes at the 4.

Congratulations to these two excellent players! Good luck in today's game.
