Ben Hartsock 17 catches 137 yards and 2 Tds
R. Arden 4 catches 50 yards
Hamby 2 catches 29 yards 1 TD

'07 stats on '08 TEs
Rory Nicol 16 catches 84 yards 0 tds
J. Ballard 13 catches 149 yards 2 tds

This may end up being the most unfair comparison of all...

If they do, in fact, use a lot of quick passes this year; I see the TE figuring significantly into that strategy. We'll see.

Either way, stats are definitely not a fair way to compare tight ends. I would leave this to people who can really compare technique and ability. The problem is, the people who have given me the impression that they can really do that have not posted in any of these threads.

From my shallow perspective, I have the impression that Hartsock was probably a better blocker than either of this year's tight-ends, but that Ballard (and maybe Nicol) might end up being a better receiver.

could be the easiest this side of nuge
Nuge and D-Line. Ballard makes this a contest after '08 ... it's another one of those deals where you've got to compare the proven commodity on a national championship winner vs potential.

02. hartsock was an absolute stud. but ballard is the first kid with the talent to play at his level. this could be the year someone outshines hartsock. but until it happens, easily 02.

btw, hamby did have considerable playing time in 02 did he not?

I'm surprised to see the modest stats on the '02 TEs. I feel like I remember us using them much more that season.
Fred Davis disagrees.

We did throw to the TE a lot more in '03, however. Hartsock had nearly twice as many receptions in '03 (33) than '02 (17).

Yes he did. As as someone pointed out the drop vs Texas I'll point out his early fumble recovery in The Game '02 that kept a critical drive alive and kept momentum from making a huge swing toward scUM.

BTW '02 on this one. Given time Ballard might eclipse Hartsock but he hasn't yet.

I'm going to pick this based on who I'd rather have on my team. I think Ballard is the best TE of the bunch, alhough he hasn't had much of a chance to shine. I'm not taking anything away from Hartsock, he played like a champion, but Ballard and Nicol give more versatility than Hartsock and Hamby.
