I thought it would be interesting to compare the 2008 Team vs. the 2002 National champions on a position by position basis.

First position being QB.

On the surface it clearly seems like TB has more tools and is superior to Krenzel in terms of production. However, Krenzel had some fantastic intangibles like being cool under pressure, not making mistakes, and being a winner.

Boeckman may be the more physically gifted player, but he has yet to show the intelligence that Krenzel did. Krenzel knew he didn't have the strongest arm, so played within his ability, and coaches put together game plans that allowed just that.

If Boeckman gets that same attention from the OC as Krenzel did, Boeckman could in fact have a better season than Krenzel.

It's a tough call. I would give Boecks the edge in the passing category. Sometimes Krenzel couldn't hit the side of a barn, watch the KSU Fiesta for a prime example. CK definitely gets the nod in the running and decision making categories. CK's heroics in '02 still amaze me to this day. If not for him, we may not have been a top 25 team, let alone NC. But it's interesting to speculate how TB would have done on that team. I would put Jenkins, Gamble, and Vance slightly above what TB is working with. The current guys are just fine, but Jenkins was the best WR since Boston, and Gamble's speed isn't matched on the '07 team. The '07 O-line is better than '02, which could make a difference, since TB needs a long time to make decisions. RB goes to '07 as well, based soley on the games that MoC missed. I would venture to say that the increase in completions and yardage if TB was on the '02 squad would lessen the need for late game heroics. The times when TB would have struggled are the games where MoC was out and the running game was ineffective, that's precisely the situation where the "Bad Todd" could emerge. But given the strength of the D in '02, there would have been plenty of second chances. I could see TB in '02 having the same results thru 13 games, but without the close calls. The NC game could only have been pulled off by CK. On the other hand, I don't know if CK could have led the '07 team to 11 wins. TB was a big part of our early season success in '07. In the end, you have to go with Krenzel. It's really an unfair question, like asking a christian whether they'd chose Jesus or David.

This is truly an unfair comparison and I can't say who is better.

But I have always been impressed by Krenzel's ability to feel the pocket and navigate it with precision while keeping his eyes downfield. The many times he stepped up in the pocket looking like a convincing runner only to pass the ball must have frustrated many a defense. Here's hoping that Boeckman can just consistently step up in the pocket this year.

Craig was indeed clutch and tough, and he did lead us to a national championship, and he'll own a place in buckeye lore for that for sure.

Playing devil's advocate....some people might say we won is spite of him.

The Defense was impenetrable, and MoC converted every short yardage play put before him.

I remember that season being very hard to watch, we rarely looked good, but managed to squeek by in every game.

Tressel asked Craig to do very little, we played a field position game and won with defense.

If we add Krenzel's intangibles to Boeckman's size and arm....we'd have a heisman candidate

It's hard because we have yet to see what Todd can do his senior year. His junior year was better than I expected for a first year starter. On the flip side I think Todd will have a few more (healthy) weapons on offense.

Had this been asked before the last few games of the season I would have said Boeckman. After? Krenzel.
.....here is to Boeckman proving me wrong though.

I will add that Boeckman is many leagues ahead of Krenzel in the passing department IMO.

Then I would say those people didn't see the UC, Purdue, Illinois or Miami games.

MoC played very little in the second half of that season or at all in the UC game. The Holy Buckeye was on 4th and short with MoC watching from the sidelines.

You are only remembering half the games. We put the smack down on nearly everyone early when we were firing on all cylinders.

Tressel asked Craig to do very little, we played a field position game and won with defense.

4th quarter vs UC pass at the goal line turned into a scramble for the TD
4th quarter winning drive vs Wisky had two huge pass plays
4th down vs Purdue
3rd and longd OT scramble vs Illinois
4th and 14 in OT vs Miami
4th and goal in OT vs Miami

Just off the top of my head when Tress clearly asked CK to do quite a bit for him and he came through every time.

Indeed
