Thaddeus must have done something right this spring to get taken #1.

It appears he was the #1 pick no matter what, as Jim Tressel "coincidentally" had Gibsons' jersey under the podium.

I like the idea of having a 'speed' end this year. I can't remeber the last time we had someone in his mold rushing the passer. Under Tressel, it's almost always been bull-rushers or a combination of speed/power.

Thaddeus will take that Dwight Freeney approach. Hopefully he's as good at it.

Gibson drafted first for spring game

Ohio State players respect sophomore-to-be's ability to pressure the quarterback.

COLUMBUS ? NFL general managers are always looking for disruptive speed-rushers at defensive end, and Ohio State's senior football players showed they understand how valuable those players are while serving as GMs for the spring game draft Wednesday, April 16.
First, some quick background: Coach Jim Tressel divvies up his seniors-to-be between the Scarlet and Gray teams and then lets them take turns selecting the nonseniors one position at a time. And it's always a lively affair.

With the opening pick, Scarlet linebacker James Laurinaitis and his mates surprised onlookers by grabbing sophomore Thaddeus Gibson, who has excelled this spring at the "Leo" spot, which is a linebacker-defensive end hybrid whose primary function is to pressure quarterbacks.

A Scarlet and Gray Game primer

Thursday, April 17, 2008
Gibson
A Scarlet and Gray Game primer:
What is it? An Ohio State team scrimmage played over four 11-minute quarters that signals the end of spring practice. It won't tell you a lot about the team, but on a sunny day, it's not a bad way to spend an afternoon.
@StoryAd
When is it? Saturday, 1:30 p.m., Ohio Stadium.
It follows what? Ohio State will play Denver in men's lacrosse at 11 a.m. as part of a spring sports extravaganza. Ohio State hopes to break the all-time lacrosse attendance record of 55,004 and break the OSU spring game record of 75,301.
Cheap day: Tickets are $5 each, with kids 6 and under free. Go to ohiostatebuckeyes.com or purchase them at the north ticket window on Saturday, which will be cash only. Parking is free.
If you stay home: The Big Ten Network will be dropping in live on the game while covering eight conference spring games, then replaying the OSU game in full at 11 p.m. and again on Sunday at 6 p.m.

Ohio State expects record crowds over weekend
Thursday, April 17, 2008
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The black circles painted near the end zones at Ohio Stadium are a dead giveaway that there's more going on there than a football game this weekend.

What used to be a simple scrimmage to conclude spring football practices has turned into a hyped three-day sports extravaganza at Ohio State with a glorified practice as the centerpiece.

"We're hoping for big crowds all weekend long," Head Coach Jim Tressel said Tuesday.

School officials are trying to set a home attendance record (currently 5,360) at the Buckeyes' baseball game against Purdue at Bill Davis Stadium on Friday night. They also hope to break the national record of 52,004 at a collegiate lacrosse game when Ohio State's men host Denver at 11 a.m. at Ohio Stadium ? painted to accommodate them ? leading into the football scrimmage.

Eclipsing the lacrosse attendance mark, set in last year's national semifinals in Baltimore, might be a reach, considering the average attendance at a Buckeyes home lacrosse game last season was 958.

After that, the goal is to also break Alabama's unofficial national record of 92,138 at the Crimson Tide's 2007 spring game. Then on Sunday, Ohio State's softball team hopes to surpass the Buckeye Field record for attendance (1,175) when it takes on Penn State.

Ohio State spring game offering more than football

Buckeyes hold draft for spring game

Wednesday, April 16, 2008 5:48 PM
By Ken Gordon

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Defensive end Thaddeus Gibson was the first overall pick in a raucous spring-game draft the Ohio State football team conducted today. That doesn?t mean Gibson is considered the team?s best player -- hardly. All seniors are split up among the Scarlet and Gray squads beforehand, so players like James Laurinaitis, Alex Boone, Todd Boeckman and Malcolm Jenkins were not drafted.
Also, once a team drafts a player at a position, all other players at the position must be drafted before another position is opened.
So in reality, it?s an exercise in what position has a player who is clearly superior. Solomon Thomas was the only other ?Leo? besides Gibson.
