2008 tOSU Special Teams discussion (official thread)

Smalls had a TD called back against Michigan...

so the threat of him is a legit thing on special teams, we just need
to make it more of the norm.

I guess we weren't able to see the real Small last year partly because the blocking on special teams last year was atrocious. And I think if he can have a good return consistently along with holding onto the ball, I have no problem putting him back there.

If Hartline or Wells are returning any types of kicks.. it's a sign we're being way too conservative, and valuing merely securing the ball as the goal of kick returns, not making plays..

Ask Kent State what they think of Hartline's punt returning ability...

Personally, I think the blocking could use more work than the return man. I think there was a dropoff after the 05 season in that department.

What the deal with this new freshman we got? Is he supposed to be any good?
Flash Thomas? Very explosive, question will be reliability with veterans currently manning the depth chart for returners.

I was talking about Ben Buchannon but yeah I guess we can touch on both. Well I think you should give everyone a fair shot at the return position and go from there. I don't care about how old one guy is to another. It's about production.

Not-So Special Teams

What has happened to the return game that was a terror? NCAA rank 117Th (can that be right?)
And the field goal kicking-4 blocks last year.
And the punt return game is mediocre at best.
On a team with this much talent, how is this possible?

i'm not going to search for the articles/links but it sounds like last year the sacrificed some talent on special teams, for stamina health reasons among 1st and 2nd teamers.

I remember one coach saying they would address that his year. I think we'll see more athletic blockers this year, and a re-emphasis on that part of the game.

It was deplorable last year.

The KR game was pretty bad last year, but I think 117th is misleading. So many teams kick the high pop-up to the side against tOSU now. If they based it on average starting field position after the kickoff (which is what really matters), I don't think the ranking would be nearly so poor.

The blocking of placekicks was a real problem, and I'm sure the staff will address that. The punt returns were OK (an 88-yard TD really helps the average), but not up to what tOSU fans have been used to with Ted Ginn, Jr.

Agreed with all of that, but the blocking on kick-off returns was pretty brutal. The lanes weren't there last year.

Not buying it. This can't possibly be an excuse for a team with this talent. Clearly, something changed more than Ted Ginn Jr leaving. There's more going on here. I just can't put a finger on what. Maybe Tress picking up the slack for Daniels being sick?
