I, for one, am very glad Jake Ballard finally weighed in on this issue. I have been waiting to hear his opinion since this QB controversy began. (yes, that's sarcasm)
I find it pretty amusing that the pendulum has swung all the way back on this issue, and now, apparently, there are many out there that are positive that if only TB could get back on the field the offense would miraculously be cured. We suddenly would have the downfield passing game that is currently lacking, Beanie would be running through the now massive holes that appear in the line the instant the ball is snapped. Can't you just see it? If you listen to what's been coming out of the Woody Hayes center and if you spend any time on any other board, it just all seems so simple........
Reality is, as has been well chronicled, that the script on beating TB is out there, we all know it. Limit Beanie and when they pass, blitz Todd into submission and wait for mistakes. I admit, I fell for the spring hype that this year would be different, that he was in command, had new confidence, etc, but its just not there. USC anyone? OU? Heck, they even had red zone trouble against YSU. Do I think that OSU would have scored more against Purdue with TB? Possibly. Do I think that he would have led us down the field against Wisconsin in the 4th quarter? I have no hard evidence to go back to to tell me he would have.
Problem is now, there is a script for limiting Terrelle to. LOAD the line of scrimmage, stop Beanie, stretch Terrelle horizontally when he runs, get OSU in third and long, and wait. This is where the coaches have really disappointed me this year, the play calling has been horrendous. I hate to agree with Herbie, but the worst thing that you can do with a young quarterback is run on 1st and second down and put him in third and long where the chances of success drop dramatically. If you want to build TPs confidence, call some safe passes (that hopefully will be caught) on 1st and second down, try to keep the defense honest just a little, put him in managable third downs, let the kid get a rhythm for crying out loud. As has been well documented, the line isn't exactly mid-90s Nebraska, and I think a little creativity would help them quite a bit too. It doesn't just stop with TP, Todd hasn't been the beneficiery of alot of common sense either. Can we please resist the urge to run an option with Todd when he gets in? Please? For me?
Lastly, while you can probably guess that I'm all for TP starting, is there a rule against taking him out for a series or two when things are sputtering? Try something different, calm him down, maybe even do something radical like attempt to coach him a little (has anyone ever seen anyone coaching him during the game?). I know this year it seems that we only substitute for someone when they start to get hot, but I don't think it would hurt.
Sorry about the rant, I normally only lurk, but my wife is getting tired of hearing me complain, and I had to get it out.
