2008 tOSU QB discussion (official thread)

It's becoming clear the players in general, but especially on offense, have lost some faith in the coaches. A lot of comments questioning the decisions of the staff and by players who are usually non-controversial. This season is still teetering on the brink of disaster, IMO.

couldn't agree more. this could crumble like a house of cards if they aren't careful.

I am shocked that statements like Ballard's are even being made. You've got a freshman QB who, IMO, didn't even play that bad of a game and who still led his team to a double digit victory. From my vantage point in the Shoe on Saturday, subpar playcalling and o-line play was at least as much to blame for the poor offensive performance as was Pryor's play. I hate to say it, but this smacks of players being upset at Boeckman's demotion from the beginning, yet waiting to say something until the slightest hint of less than stellar play from Pryor.

I, for one, am very glad Jake Ballard finally weighed in on this issue. I have been waiting to hear his opinion since this QB controversy began. (yes, that's sarcasm)

I find it pretty amusing that the pendulum has swung all the way back on this issue, and now, apparently, there are many out there that are positive that if only TB could get back on the field the offense would miraculously be cured. We suddenly would have the downfield passing game that is currently lacking, Beanie would be running through the now massive holes that appear in the line the instant the ball is snapped. Can't you just see it? If you listen to what's been coming out of the Woody Hayes center and if you spend any time on any other board, it just all seems so simple........

Reality is, as has been well chronicled, that the script on beating TB is out there, we all know it. Limit Beanie and when they pass, blitz Todd into submission and wait for mistakes. I admit, I fell for the spring hype that this year would be different, that he was in command, had new confidence, etc, but its just not there. USC anyone? OU? Heck, they even had red zone trouble against YSU. Do I think that OSU would have scored more against Purdue with TB? Possibly. Do I think that he would have led us down the field against Wisconsin in the 4th quarter? I have no hard evidence to go back to to tell me he would have.

Problem is now, there is a script for limiting Terrelle to. LOAD the line of scrimmage, stop Beanie, stretch Terrelle horizontally when he runs, get OSU in third and long, and wait. This is where the coaches have really disappointed me this year, the play calling has been horrendous. I hate to agree with Herbie, but the worst thing that you can do with a young quarterback is run on 1st and second down and put him in third and long where the chances of success drop dramatically. If you want to build TPs confidence, call some safe passes (that hopefully will be caught) on 1st and second down, try to keep the defense honest just a little, put him in managable third downs, let the kid get a rhythm for crying out loud. As has been well documented, the line isn't exactly mid-90s Nebraska, and I think a little creativity would help them quite a bit too. It doesn't just stop with TP, Todd hasn't been the beneficiery of alot of common sense either. Can we please resist the urge to run an option with Todd when he gets in? Please? For me?

Lastly, while you can probably guess that I'm all for TP starting, is there a rule against taking him out for a series or two when things are sputtering? Try something different, calm him down, maybe even do something radical like attempt to coach him a little (has anyone ever seen anyone coaching him during the game?). I know this year it seems that we only substitute for someone when they start to get hot, but I don't think it would hurt.

Sorry about the rant, I normally only lurk, but my wife is getting tired of hearing me complain, and I had to get it out.

Stuffing the run while simultaneously getting good pocket pressure is an adequate script for stymieing any quarterback.

I've certainly seen Tressel talking to him at many points during the game. I obviously don't know what he's saying, but I'd speculate they're not discussing the presidential election. What do you want to see, Pryor running wind sprints and performing drills between series?

A couple of points that upset me during the last 2 games were that a interception occurs on the 30 going in and 2 run plays are called to the same side same style of run at that, no attempt to bury them by hitting a PA pass over the top on first down. Ohio State has been running on first down somewhere around 70-90 percent of the time and just recently started adding in more PA passes. Priors issues seem to come in his youth, still not many, but decision making plays(inexpirience). A missed option read and a two-sided coin in not wanting to give up on every play with it turning into a worse result. His teammates ARENT helping him by ranting about play calling and wanting TB in there. He needs confidence boosting and you would think with his fourth quarter drive he would have gotten that but he instead has a freshman type game, again not terribly played, started getting down when he couldnt move the ball and then comes into a much bigger week with the guys he will be in battle with throwing him under the bus. One play showed me who the bucks should have at qb and it occured in the USC game.... TP recieved a bad snap fumbled the ball(on a 3 and long) picked up the ball calmly made a guy miss and hit a ten yard first down. I'm sorry but Todd would have jumped on the ball in a fetal position and accepted his failure. TP needs these expiriences if not just for this year but more importantly for next season He is our future for 2 years and we will need his growth that he will recieve playing at MSU, against PSU, at ILL and at home against Mich. The rest of the team needs to grow up stop finger pointing and gel so they can try to win the big ten.

Main problem is not the QB it's the play calling right now. As been harped on you can't just hand the ball off 2 times straight and expect a freshman to feel fine and dandy throwing for first downs on 3rd and 5. If they're going to do that to him I'd like to see Pryor just say, alright fine, then I'll just run for the damn first down.

On one side the play calling has got to get more aggressive. I understand they dont' fully trust Pryor yet, but at some point you're going to have to go no holds bared and just let him learn with trial by error. The onl thing Pryor has to do is remember what got him here. His feet is wether he likes it or not his best weapon. I'm not saying run every passing down but if nothing is open remember you're the most talented running QB in college! Get up field and get what you can because no one has the talent Pryor does. Pryor is rare in that he doesn't turn the ball over so thats extremely good, but IMO if he just took more chances with his feet he would have no problems. Vince Young for example, while an improved passer through his time, always reverted to beating teams with his legs no matter what. In every game Vince made his impact with his feet, and I believe Pryor should be the same way. The thing is I think Pryor wants to prove everyone he's a passer while ignoring his god given speed and strength running the football.

One thing is clear though this is PRYORS offense, and taking him out IMO would crush Terrelle. If Todd get's any time it better be because we're losing 49-0 or winning 49-0
