Dolphins negotiating for Jake Long as No. 1 pick

The Miami Dolphins could soon be off the clock.

The Dolphins have formally begun contract negotiations with agent Tom Condon about the prospect of selecting former Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long as the first overall selection in this year's draft.

Condon, who also represents Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan, was in South Florida early this week to negotiate specifically on behalf of Long at the request of the team, The Miami Herald has learned.

The Dolphins would like to have a contract in place with their first pick before the draft on April 26, which would allow them to avoid a potentially ugly holdout like the one that took place in Oakland last year upon the Raiders' selection of quarterback JaMarcus Russell.

Miami is still intrigued by Virginia defensive end Chris Long, but no in-person talks between Chris Long's agent and Miami are believed to have taken place to date. However, the Dolphins are believed to be happy with quarterback John Beck, and they are not considering Ryan as an option with the first pick.

The latest meeting between Condon and the team doesn't necessarily mean the Dolphins have made their final decision to select Jake Long over Chris Long, but it is certainly a major step in that direction.

By selecting Jake Long, the Dolphins would fill a gaping hole along their offensive line. Vernon Carey is currently slated as the starter at left tackle, but selecting Jake Long would potentially allow the team to move Carey back to his more natural position on the right side of the line.

Dolphins begin talks with Jake Long

The Miami Dolphins began preliminary talks Tuesday with a representative of Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long on a contract to be the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft, according to two sources close to the discussions. However, Miami?s early move could be used as leverage to put pressure on Long or one of the other top prospects to get a deal done before the draft.

For now, it appears that Long, the massive left tackle, is tops on the team?s list. Long?s agent, Tom Condon, met with multiple members of the team?s staff at the Dolphins training facility in Davie, Fla. Condon also represents Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan, but the two sources indicated that the Dolphins broached the subject of a contract with Long, not Ryan.

Contd...

Todd McShay just said Lesean McCoy is the most talented runningback in the country outside of Knowshon Moreno.
Yeah, and he said earlier last week that Vernon Gholston was the most overrated player that would be a Top-10 pick in the draft this year.

Todd McShay is an idiot.

I believe in a segment on ESPN this week, McShay argued with Mel Kiper that Derrick Harvey was far and away a better pick than Big Vern. Then he proceeded to claim that Keith Rivers was also highly overrated, and I was forced to turn on the Home and Garden Network to get more accurate football coverage. :roll1:

Mcshay has got to say stupid things in order for people to pay attention to him. The guy has no Idea who is talented and who is not.... He says vern takes plays off and doesn't play to his ability all the time right? I've never seen anything but hustle outta 50. I also think its funny how everyone talks about Jake Long being the next great left tackle, and he's going no doubt #1, he's a stud, he's the man.... Oh yeah but Vernon OWNED HIS ASS for 2 years straight.... somethings off here.

back to beanie, I'll keep it simple this time, he's the shit....

I think Vern may be the biggest reach in the top-10 (which may be what McShay is driving at), but his upside makes it worth the gamble. You could also argue McFadden if he goes before five (just because of the shelf-life of RBs and the production you can draft later in the draft), but that's more based on position than McFadden himself.

Honestly I have no idea how he has been exalted to THE go-to guy for both CFB & NFL scouting, but I can at least stand watching him talk. Kiper's overdose of enunciation and inflection makes watching him nearly unbearable, imo.

Keep seeing this more and more, and do not understand it at all. There was absolutely no domination by Vern vs Long last year. At best it was a wash, but I'd give a decided edge to Jake. Got dominated by Jake vs the run, but he made some plays vs the pass.

As for this year, he rarely faced Long. He did beat him for a sack of Mallett, and Heyward made some plays vs Long, but the 'domination' was vs Schilling.

First part is a bit absurd imo... second part I can agree with a bit.
