2008 Football Rumblings

Re: Asked about the play of OL Steve Rehring, Tressel said he saw limited action for an unusual reason.
"Rehring only got in a dozen or so plays ... he missed an 11-play drive," Tressel said. "He had to go to the restroom, and so he probably would have played closer to half of the time, but he missed an 11 and then he missed like a 10-play drive."
A reporter said, "That's a long bathroom break" to which Tressel responded, "Well, there were multiple."

Ohio State hit hard, still hurting

Re: There were very few changes in the depth chart this week, but there may be one coming soon.
Offensive lineman Steve Rehring is recovering from his ankle injury, and according to Alex Boone, when Rehring returns to action he may cause a bit of a shakeup along the offensive line.

Hopefully he has also recoved from the "JoPa disease".

Rehring is the size of an average Sasquatch. When pinching a loaf, you can only imagine (though I'd rather not)......

As a matter of fact, one recognized trait of a Sasquatch is the reported yells, or screams, which are said to be ear piercing and bombastic in force. Some say it is a mating call, others suggest it is one Sasquatch trying to locate another. Personally, with the size of the loaf being pinched, I think we have a reasonable answer for the high pitched scream.

Luckily, for SR, the crowd was loud at Camp Randal......

Nice.

EDSBS on the case again:

EDSBS ? Archive ? HANG ON, POOPY

HANG ON, POOPY

Ohio State seems to be doing what good teams do after getting their heads kicked in early: regrouping, finding their rhythm, retooling with the extremely un-gay Buckeye Pistol formation. (Fullback! GRRR!!!), and otherwise recovering nicely for a stretch run.

It?s your standard, level-headed Tressel performance, though there?s just some shit a football coach can?t predict or take care of, like say, the shits. OL Steve Rehring, who was supposed to rotate in and see spot duty after missing two games to injury, had a problem with false starts no amount of coaching or scheming could prevent.

...

Hopefully, Rehring didn?t blow a Power O-ring, and will be prepared to assume his proper duties blocking for Mark May?s least favorite player in the universe, Terrelle Pryor. ...

This year's Buckeyes lacking the fear factor

By Doug Harris
Staff Writer

Thursday, October 09, 2008
Ohio State fans shouldn't be too euphoric about that comeback win against Wisconsin last week. I don't like being the bearer of bad news, but this team still has issues.
The Buckeyes simply can't muster a pass rush with their front four, and quality opponents will be able to keep their quarterbacks upright and pick the defensive unit apart.
Even blitzes have been slow, predictable and ineffective. The Buckeyes were ranked first nationally last season in total defense, which makes this year's slump all the more befuddling. Who knew Vernon Gholston and his school-record 14 sacks would be missed as much as they have been?
The defense really looked overrated in the final 52 seconds of the first half against Wisconsin. The Badgers were at their 20-yard line with a 7-7 tie and were so confident in their ability to move the ball that they went with a hurry-up offense.
They blew down the field with ease for a chip-shot field goal and a 10-7 lead.
What's even more problematic for the Buckeyes is that their front four are built for speed, leaving them susceptible to being blown off the ball against a strong ground game. The Badgers exploited that, too.

Buckeyes not where they want to be

By Rusty Miller

What's brewing today with the Ohio State Buckeyes:
Buckeyes buzz
Ohio State's offense looks great at times, then not so great the rest of the time. At Wisconsin, it put together superlative drives on its first and next-to-last possessions. In between, the Buckeyes were just so-so.
Here's what a couple of the offensive players think, offering midterm grades:
Fullback Brandon Smith: "I think a C-plus, a B-minus with the curve. We're doing pretty good. We've faced a lot of adversity with injuries and whatnot, and the quarterbacks changing around, and just people moving around in different roles ... but we finally got our feet on the ground, and we're ready to move forward."
Offensive tackle Alex Boone: "Being honest? Probably a C-minus or a D-plus. We're going to get criticism from everybody, and we know that. But we need to really step it up. I don't know how you do that. You just keep going and pushing guys and working."

Can the flu help Wells' recovery?

By Rusty Miller

What's brewing today with the Ohio State Buckeyes:
Buckeyes buzz
At this rate, the Buckeyes are going to run out of players against Purdue (3:34 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11).
Ohio State is hoping that tailback Chris "Beanie" Wells has no aftereffects to sickness he encountered this week. He's already missed three games due to a foot injury.
"He had a little bout with the flu this week," coach Jim Tressel said. "Hopefully that day's rest because of the flu helps the foot even more. With Beanie, we're hoping that now we're back in the shape where he's a 20-plus carry guy. That would be the goal."
He may have to carry that much because of some other injuries for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State Insider: Flu may strengthen Wells

by Doug Lesmerises Thursday October 09, 2008, 10:29 PM

COLUMBUS -- Beanie Wells missed a day of practice with the flu this week, and maybe that's a good thing.
small_wellsmugmf.jpg
Marvin Fong/PDOSU's Chris Wells.
Ohio State's top running back on Tuesday said he felt very sore after practice, but he knew he'd have to live with the pain in his right foot. On Thursday, OSU coach Jim Tressel said Wells looked as healthy as he's seen him while running for 168 yards on 22 carries against Wisconsin last week and generally projected good thoughts about the key to the OSU run game. "Maybe that day of rest because of the flu helped the foot even more," Tressel said. "We hope he's back in the shape where he's a 20-plus carry guy. That would be the goal."
Wells could be called on even more against Purdue on Saturday since No. 2 back Dan Herron will sit out with a concussion. But the Buckeyes will also need help from running backs Brandon Saine and Mo Wells, who have combined to gain 152 yards on 37 carries this year, a 4.1 yard average. Wells is averaging 7.9 yards per carry.

Line rotation: The Buckeyes seem to have figured out their plan on the offensive line. It's Alex Boone, Jim Cordle and Mike Brewster as starters and a three-man rotation for the two spots on the right side of the line between Ben Person, Bryant Browning and Steve Rehring.
Person is at guard, Rehring at tackle and Browning moving between the spots.
"Between the three of them, we're just working to see what our best combination is," Tressel said, "and maybe our best combination is all three of them."

Ohio State football: Updates on Wells, the offensive line and the young receivers

by Doug Lesmerises Thursday October 09, 2008, 3:46 PM

medium_Spring%20Game%20003.jpg
D.L.With injuries at receiver, freshman DeVier Posey should see more action on Saturday.
Updates from Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel today:
* Beanie Wells missed a day of practice this week with the flu, but Tressel feels good about how Wells' right foot is doing. On Tuesday, Wells said he was experiencing more soreness after a physical game at Wisconsin, but there was no chance it would keep him out Saturday.
"Maybe that day of rest because of the flu helped the foot even more," Tressel said. "We hope he's back in the shape where he's a 20-plus carry guy. That would be the goal."

* The Buckeyes seem to have figured out their plan on the offensive line. It's Alex Boone, Jim Cordle and Mike Brewster as starters and a three-man rotation for the two spots on the right side of the line between Ben Person, Bryant Browning and Steve Rehring.
Person is at guard, Rehring at tackle and Browning moving between the spots, though I think he's more natural at guard.
"Between the three of them, we're just working to see what our best combination is," Tressel said, "and maybe our best combination is all three of them."

Identity search ongoing for Buckeyes
Tressel says struggles on offense can be fixed with better execution
Friday, October 10, 2008 3:11 AM
By Tim May

The Columbus Dispatch

As Ohio State seeks a definitive offensive identity heading into the second half of the season, not even the callers yesterday to Jim Tressel's weekly radio show could agree on which mask the Buckeyes should wear. For example, there were back-to-back calls questioning the Buckeyes' play-calling in the red zone last week at Wisconsin, where they had to settle for field goals in two of three trips inside the 20. A caller named Mike wanted to see more play-action passes to take advantage of the threat posed by power back Chris "Beanie" Wells. Moments later, a fan named Satch implored Tressel to forget about getting fancy and let Wells pound the rock.
Tressel dived on the loose ball. "I think what happened, Satch, is I listened to Mike and tried to throw a play action. So I am going to quit listening to Mike and start listening to you," he said.
It was a funny exchange, but to many OSU fans, the Buckeyes squatting 10th in total offense in the Big Ten six games into the season is no laughing matter. By e-mail and on talk radio, fans have offered advice and/or scolded the coaching staff for an offense that, despite returning nine starters, has averaged a mere 337.3 yards and, more troubling, just 25.7 points (eighth in the league).

OSU football: Makeover makes Buckeyes attractive again

By JON SPENCER ? For The Advocate ? October 10, 2008

The Terrelle Train is taking on passengers faster than the Titanic took on water.
Thanks to Saturday's late heroics at Wisconsin, in front of a national TV audience, college football pundits and couch potatoes from Altoona to Yuma can bear witness to this unsinkable vibe cast by true freshman Terrelle Pryor. If Ohio State's precocious first-year quarterback isn't king of the world yet, he soon will be.
Or so suggests Gregg Doyel, columnist for CBSSports.com, and Teddy Greenstein, college football reporter for the Chicago Tribune.
According to Greenstein, the Buckeyes now flaunt the Big Ten's best quarterback-running back combo in Pryor and Chris Wells. It's the hottest two-week marriage since Britney Spears and ... who's she with now?
"He can't legally order a beer for nearly two more years," Greenstein wrote, "but Terrelle Pryor is a man. If he wasn't before his clutch performance Saturday night at Wisconsin, he is now."

Nader Abdallah of Ohio State sacks Purdue quarterback Curtis Painter.

Saturday: Ohio State 16, Purdue 3 Next game: at Michigan State
Where: Spartan Stadium
When: 3:30 p.m. Saturday
TV: ABC (Ch. 6)
Radio: WBNS-AM/FM (1460/97.1)

Purdue was to be an OSU warm-up for two lay-it-on-the-line Saturdays. Now critics are laying it on the offensive line to stand up.
In the polls

With the upsets in the top five (Oklahoma, LSU and Missouri losing), it should have been a weekend for the Buckeyes to leap. The new top five in the USA Today coaches' poll is Texas, Alabama, Penn State, Southern California and Texas Tech, and the Buckeyes remained No. 11. OSU is looking up at four other one-loss teams (USC, No. 6 Oklahoma, No. 7 Florida, No. 9 Georgia). Poll voters, it seems, reward offense.

Injured Buckeyes play through pain

Wednesday, October 15, 2008 2:58 AM
By Tim May

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
This is the time of the season when players shake off injuries that otherwise would keep them out for a while. Ohio State defensive tackle Todd Denlinger played more last week despite a high-ankle sprain, the only remedy for which is rest. Tight end Jake Ballard played despite a slight knee injury he suffered the week before against Wisconsin.
"I hurt it in camp, and it was getting better until I hurt it again," Ballard said. "Every time I land on my knee, it aggravates it again. I just have to tough it out. I'm not running as fast I was before, that's for sure. But I don't need as much to block."
With starting tight end Rory Nicol out the past two games because of an ankle sprain, Ballard said he had to gut it out, "no question."
Denlinger said he has the same motto.
"Who knows how long (the injury) is going to be, but I am fighting it as hard as I can," Denlinger said. "I'm going to play and do whatever I can to help this team, whether it's a couple of reps a game or it's the whole game. I'm just going to strap it up and go."
