2008 Depth Chart Discussion

Other depth charts news to note:

OFFENSE

None of the three freshmen linemen are listed on the second team. But OSU did go three spots deep at their three positions - left tackle, center and right tackle - and not at left guard or right guard, to make sure that Mike Adams, Mike Brewster and J.B. Shugarts at least made the depth chart.

With the injury to Kyle Mitchum, Scott Sika is Steve Rehring's backup at left guard.

Rory Nicol is listed first, but both he and Jake Ballard are indicated as starters at tight end.

Only four receivers made the depth chart. Brian Robiskie is one starter, backup up by Dane Sanzenbacher. Brian Hartline is the other started, backed up by Ray Small.

Brandon Smith is listed as the starting fullback, backed up by Ryan Lukens.

DEFENSE

Lawrence Wilson and Cam Heyward are the starting defensive ends, with Thaddeus Gibson and Curtis Terry behind Wilson and Rob Rose behind Heyward.

Nader Abdallah and Todd Denlinger are the starting tackles ahead of Doug Worthington and Dexter Larimore.

With Donald Washington serving a two-game suspension, Chimdi Chekwa is the starting corner opposite Malcolm Jenkins. Andre Amos and Shaun Lane are the backups, with Devon Torrence on third team.

Behind Kurt Coleman and Anderson Russell, Aaron Gant and Jermale Hines are the backup safeties.

SPECIAL TEAMS

As Jim Tressel said Friday, Saine and Herron are the kick returners, with Ray Small and Brian Hartline the punt returners.

The main thing that I'm taking from this that our depth gives us luxuries that most teams can't dream of. One of the sarting CBs is suspended? Just put in the nickel package CB, who would have been starting if Jenkins had left. Mr. Football Ohio 2006 RB has a sore hammy? Good thing we've got a Heisman candidate, a yeoman senior, and a redshirt frosh, who the coaches moved up to #2. There aren't enough slots on the spreadsheet for all of the stud LBs, even with the position changes.

Of course, this is just the depth chart for the YSU game. Some things will change over the season, and the spots on the chart may not reflect the actual playing time. I think Saine's spot is an indication that they want to ease him in to game situations while keeping an eye on his injury. Herron got a ton of reps in camp, and got a leg up as far as the play book goes. It will be interesting to see how the D-line formations resemble the chart. I'm thinking that since Heywood and Rose may be used at any position, they listed them as DT, even though the rotations and formations may get a lot of different looks.

Good job Abdallah. I'm glad the light switched on for him last year. If he is starting over Larimore that means he is impressing....

I'm not sure that a lot of people noticed how many quality minutes he logged last year. IMO, he was probably our most consistent DT a year ago with Denlinger's injuries.

I've heard a few "insiders" say that the D-line is going to be a strength this year. With so many "new" players (Wilson, Gibson, Terry, , Rose, Thomas) adding to last year's core that started off very green, but gained lots of experience, I think that's very possible. Solomon Thomas is said to have stood out in camp. The big knock on last year's line was lack of aggression and toughness. With guys like Gibson, Terry, Rose, Worthington, Larrimore, and Thomas coming in fresh off the bench, there should be a good push throughout the game. If the D-line can control the line of scrimmage, it will be a very long season for opposing teams.

The DL info seems to have been corrected.
Some highlights:

- Herron as 2nd team RB - past MoW and Saine
- Abdallah over Worthington at DT - I wonder how long that will last.
- Checkwa as BC - Amos backing up Jenkins (this was a question I had anyway)
- Curtis Terry is almost absent (3rd team DE) - seems to align with the "rumblings" of his ill-fated return to defense.
- Brandon Smith starting FB
- Maybe I missed this, but Kurt Coleman is listed at SS, Anderson Russell at Free - seems opposite vs. last year.
- Andy Miller as the backup Left Tackle is interesting to me...didn't see that coming.

Everything else seems as expected.

Do you guys think Boom will be the true No. 2, or will we still see M. Wells as a third down back with Boom spelling Beanie on running downs?

I'm glad that M. Wells is on this team and has hung in there as a Buckeye even though he never became the featured back. However, I'm more glad that it seems that Herron will be getting more of the meaningful carries behind C. Wells. We're gonna need him to be ready next years in what will likely be a Wells-less backfield.

Boy that's a good question. I think a more relevant is whether Boom will be number two ahead of Pryor in the running department. I know that Boom is the #2 tailback. But before some of you guys pounce on me again like last time, remember the reports about Tressel planning to put Pryor and Boeckman on the field at the same time.

In any case, I'm not advocating Pryor be used for a lot of runs, because I rather have him focus on learning the QB position and give Boom and Zoom a shot. But the question is what will the coaches do, and we'll have to wait and see.

I have a hard time really saying, but I think it's telling that he's listed there. Nothing against MoW, he's a good back and is a great Buckeye, but this seems to indicate all the raves about his performance in camp are the real deal and Boom is just the better back at this point. Like I said, we may have another Pittman-type sleeper on our hands here.

Kurt coleman started at SS and Anderson Russell started at FS last year. However IMO i think Russell would be a better choice to play SS because he plays the run very well and tackles well in space. I think Coleman would be better suited as FS because he's a playmaker and is better in coverage. Russel would have more tackles for loss and Coleman would have more int. I think that would result in more turnovers and big plays for our defense. JMO. :oh::io:
