Buckeyes Undefeated after First Weekend of Play
By John Porentas
OSU opened the baseball season with three wins last weekend for their first 3-0 start since the 2002 season.
The Buckeyes traveled to Milllington, Tennessee to participate in the Armed Services Academies Classic. They opened the season with a 7-3 win over Arkansas State, then posted a 1-0 win over Memphis before closing out the weekend with a 6-5 win over Seton Hall.
OSU pitching was very effective all weekend. No OSU starter went less than four innings and the starters allowed just three earned runs in 14 combined innings of work. Relievers Dean Wolosianski, Alex Wimmers and Drew Rucinski combined to allow one earned run and one walk while striking out seven in 10 combined innings. Reliever Eric Best pitched two innings of scoreless and hitless ball. The OSU pitching staff has an ERA of 1.33 after one week of play.

J.B. Shuck named Big 10 Pitcher of the Week

Link

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State junior pitcher/utility player J.B. Shuck has been selected as the Big Ten Conference’s initial 2008 Pitcher of the Week for his standout performance in Ohio State’s 1-0 win over Memphis Saturday in the Service Academies Spring Classic in Millington, Tenn. The honor marks the first time since 2000 that a Buckeye pitcher has been honored by the conference to open the season.
Shuck, from Galion, Ohio and Galion High School, earns the first Pitcher of the Week award of his career after recording a career-high nine strikeouts in six innings of work. He scattered just two hits and had only two walks in the effort against a Memphis team that made an appearance in the 2007 NCAA tournament. At one point he retired seven consecutive batters between the fourth and sixth innings and for the game allowed just one Tiger to reach third base

Buckeyes Still Looking for Relief Pitching as Home Season Opens
By John Porentas
The Ohio State baseball team will play its home opener today when the Pitt Panthers visit Bill Davis Stadium. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
The Buckeyes are currently 9-6. Pittsburgh comes to Columbus with a record of 6-11.
Typically OSU Head Coach Bob Todd uses the games before the home opener to look at the Buckeyes and determine what the strengths and weaknesses of his team will be in the upcoming season. This year was no exception, and after 15 games, Todd is still not sure just how good or bad his team is this year.

Hot hitting and young pitching are the key ingredients for Ohio State as the Buckeyes enter Big Ten play.

Baseball: Recovering Todd still has drive to coach

Friday, April 4, 2008 3:17 AM
By Mark Znidar

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

It was 15 minutes before an Ohio State baseball practice, and coach Bob Todd was talking about how quickly time had flown by on him. He wasn't thinking in terms of that day but rather in years. This is his 21st season with the Buckeyes and 25th as a college head coach.
On Jan. 3, 2009, he will be inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association hall of fame. The selection committee is composed of active and retired coaches.
Todd, 59, has earned his place with 938 career victories going into a four-game Big Ten series against Minnesota that begins at 6:35 tonight in Bill Davis Stadium.

Baseball: An ugly win on an ugly night
Hardy Hale hangs in as OSU offense outlasts Minnesota
Saturday, April 5, 2008 3:01 AM
By Mark Znidar

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Let's just say it was good for everyone involved that Ohio State and Minnesota players had nothing to do with setting off the fireworks display after last night's game.
Someone might have gotten hurt.
The teams combined for 14 walks, a wild pitch, two balks and a passed ball in a three-hour, 14-minute mini-marathon that was hard on the eyes.
The Buckeyes defeated the Gophers 11-6 because starting pitcher Jake Hale wouldn't give in to the batters or a raging sinus infection and the offense ping-ponged the ball all over Bill Davis Stadium for 13 hits.

OSU roundup: Dew's homer lifts baseball team

Saturday, April 12, 2008 3:00 AM

From staff reports

Sophomore Ryan Dew's home run in the top of the 11th inning propelled the Ohio State baseball team to a 4-3 win over Michigan State last night in a Big Ten game in East Lansing, Mich. Dew, who was pinch-hitting for designated hitter Ryan Meade, drilled the first pitch for his first home run of the season.
"I figured (reliever Nolan Moody) would throw me a fastball since I had been sitting all game and that's what he did," Dew said. "I knew right away it was out."

OSU baseball: Buckeyes denied sweep of Spartans

Baseball: Bat, arm have Shuck in middle of everything

Friday, April 18, 2008 5:30 AM
By Mark Znidar

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

See J.B. Shuck pitch. See him play the outfield. See him hit. And while he's at it, see him steal bases, bunt and generally get opponents believing there's more than one of him out there. There isn't much Shuck can't do, and that's why Ohio State coach Bob Todd has him somewhere in the lineup every day.
Shuck will be in center field and batting third when the Buckeyes (18-12, 7-4) begin a four-game Big Ten series against Purdue (17-16, 9-3) at 6:35 tonight in Bill Davis Stadium.
He'll also be in center for a doubleheader Saturday. On Sunday, though, he'll be the starting pitcher in the fourth game.
What would Shuck, a junior from Galion, Ohio, do if Todd told him to choose one position?

College baseball: OSU's bats lack ping that Purdue's bring

SHARI LEWIS Dispatch
Ohio State center fielder J.B. Shuck can't track down a ball at the wall in the Buckeyes' 7-4 loss to Purdue.

In those old Nike basketball sneaker commercials, a wide-eyed Spike Lee used to watch Michael Jordan sky for rebounds and get his elbows over the rim to throw down dunks.
What was Lee's deduction?
"It must be the shoes."
Ohio State coach Bob Todd wasn't making excuses for his team's five measly hits in a 7-4 loss to Purdue last night in front of 3,093 in Bill Davis Stadium, but he certainly was envious of the Boilermakers' brand of bat.
