On yahoo, a writer broke down the Olympics and gave the medal count for non-judged events

If you throw in judged events China has a commanding lead in Gold medals (43 to 26) but still trails the over all medal count by three (79 to 76)

Pretty stupid analysis by that writer. Everybody knew going in that the Chinese strongest sports included gymnastics and diving. Gee, which sports have judging? :roll1:

I must say.... they're gonna drop Softball and yet they are willing to have table tennis and trampoline as Olympic events? Odd.

I won't pretend to know the first thing about gymnastics or diving, but I can say that the once every 4 years that I watch these events, gymnastics credibility gets worse and worse. Diving tends to stay the same, credibility wise. Each dive pretty much looks the same to me, and the chick announcer drives me crazy, but it seems pretty reasonably judged. Gymnastics, on the other hand, seems more and more bizarre. For me, when one chick falls on her face and one chick does not, and the one that did wins a medal and the one that did not does not, there's a problem with the scoring. And the tie break is ridiculous. First, there's no real reason to not issue two golds, especially when you issue two silvers or bronzes. Other sports have no issues giving the same medal in a dead heat, nor should they. Second, in a judged event, the very notion that you can refine the score somehow is absurd. If they're tied, and you'll not accept ties, you should send em out for another go at it. Or... jello wrestling... if it's not too "perpy"

I give this post a 9.150 for execution, but the start value is rather low. I don't think it's good enough for a medal.

If it turns out that tibor is actually a 12 year old Chinese girl though, that score is sure to go up.

Softball isn't being dropped because they somehow think it's more stupid than ping pong. It's being dropped because the USA always wins, and it's not even close. In my opinion, if the rest of the world is tired of losing they should start playing better.

I don't mind baseball being dropped. I'm of the opinion that the Olympics should represent the biggest stage for whatever is being contested over the course of the two weeks. Baseball's biggest stage will never be the Olympics. I think the same goes for soccer and basketball too.

Huh. 12 year old chinese girl. That would explain a lot.

Lolo's poise and class in the post fall interview - rightfully taking all the blame and saying you have to clear all 10 of them to win, even stepping away from the mike to give a brief hug to the silver medalist -was impressive. While she is a great hurdler, I think more of her now than if she'd won the thing. One thing to have speed, another to have character. Better to have the latter than the former in the long run. She'll make millions in pro track either way, but she might be more marketable because of her loss than had she won...Wheaties as a sponsor excepted of course.

That must be why the USA is killing everybody in gold medals.

Softball is being dropped because not enough countries play it well.

The US always wins baseball too, right? That's why baseball is being dropped? :roll1:

What does the gold medal tally have to do with softball being dropped?

And what is the relevant distinction between the US "being too good" at softball and the rest of the world "not being good enough" that made what I posted and what you posted so different?

I never said baseball was being dropped for the same reason. The reason I have read is that the the participating countries aren't willing to field baseball "dream teams" like basketball does.

Agreed. She was refreshingly candid about not getting the job done. Most athletes would make an excuse in that situation (see also: Sanya Richards).

shocking...China out points us on mens high-bar after this Horton kid nailed it and had a better routine.

Eh, Horton doesn't seem to be bothered by it. Good to see him get an individual medal, and even better that he toned down some of the douchebag act that he had going last week.

ya it was close....i don't think he expected to be there, and he was a douchebag last week.

Anything close between China and another country automatically went to China in gymnastics this year. Kind of takes the excitement out when you know if China performs well, it's over.
