2007 McDonald's All-American Game

Did Calathes have a good 2nd half? (gator fans are drooling over his performance) He seemed to struggle a bit when I watched (mostly in the 1st half), and certainly didn't look like a 5-star PG. He seemed like a slightly less gangly Diebler to me.

he had a better second half than first half. he may be the first golden arches aa 2/3 that has (and i'm not joking) no better than a 24-inch vertical. he plays a step behind his opposition. he will always get rebounded over. his shooting form for the last couple shots was downright horrible. seriously bad.

Yea, I don't understand this Calathes guy. They kept raving about how nice of a 3 point shooter he was, and his form looked like a hack player's at the local YMCA.

He has pretty good vision in relation to passing and seemed to be a little stingy on defense. I'm just wondering: Who styles their hair before playing a basketball game?

diebler could have played in tonight's game and probably would have fared very well. edit: to put it most succinctly, calathes is a poor man's diebler.
Agreed, both are sharpshooters (supposedly). Beyond that, Diebler has adequate agility for his position, and much better elevation and inside play. Footspeed will be a big issue next fall, unless he improves in a hurry. Brandon Fuss Cheatham could take Nick off the dribble. Conley/Lawson would be at the basket before he knew what hit him.

There is going to be a steep dropoff from Taurian G to Nick C if UF's mass exodus takes play.

Beasley outplays Mayo as West beats East

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) ? Michael Beasley saw O.J. Mayo pull up at the top of the key, and his heart sank. "I was like, 'Oh no, that's in,'" Beasley said of Mayo's game-winning 3-point attempt in the final seconds of the McDonald's All-American Game at Freedom Hall on Wednesday night.
But Mayo's frustrating night ended the way it began, with a miss. The shot hit the back of the rim, and Nick Calathes' putback went long as the West held on for a 114-112 victory in the annual high school all-star game.

Rivals has KK down for 11 minutes...:!

Lowest on the East squad besides Chris Wright who also had 11 minutes...I understand you want to win, but I don't understand how KK was doing that for them...They built the 5 pt lead out of the gate with him in the game...

As for Caltheses shot, yeah it doesnt look pretty, but when you watch it, he takes his guide hand off the ball so that he basically shoots with one hand, which allows him to not effect his shot with his off hand...I must be in the minority, but to call him a poor mans jon Diebler is a stretch. I am not saying Diebler isnt as good or better, but to say that Diebler is that much better is looking thru some scarlet tinted glasses...

Also guys like Nick Young, Gabe Pruitt, and company at USC aren't going to put up with Mayo taking all those shots...Could be some internal problems next year at USC...If they put it together tho they could be a pretty dangerous team...

That's true. I remember watching LeBron in this game a few years ago and thinking that he was quite a ballhog himself that night.

That is funny because all I can remember from that game was King James running the show by dishing to everyone and letting his points come to him, something Mayo has to learn.

And using Lawson and Jr. as examples isn't really adequate imo. I mean those guys will be in the pros and there aren't many elite guards who can stay in front of them. I agree about Calathes though,it's hard to judge from one game, but he just doesn't look like a PG at the elite D1 level. Forget about the Lawsons, that kid will have trouble staying in front of guys like Jamar Butler.

After watching this past season and the game last night, you really appreciate how good last years PG class was. There are some great pure points like Rose,Lucas and Flynn but this class doesn't compare. I'm not sure if we even know Calathes' name if he was in last years class. Nick has good vision, but the best thing he has going for him is his shot. Without that I think he would be another Greg Paulus,a guy who was supposed to be the ish coming out of HS but is struggling on the next level.(specifically with defense). From that game he looked like Jon Scheyer with better passing ability.

Like eveyone else,I was dissapointed with the minimal minutes that Kosta got,but he did well in the first half. I love how comfortable he is with the ball, can't wait to see some high post plays with him. After 07' ya gotta think the offense will be run through Koufos by getting a touch every time down and letting him make decisions and passes like g-town uses Hibbert.

About the game itself, some players stood out but overall I wasn't that impressed. IMO,none of these games since the Lebron classic have quite lived up to the hype.
