2007 individual awards/ESPN Home Depot Show

I agree wholeheartedly with the observations on Dorsey -- Dorsey is flat out dominant. I would, however, argue that Chris Long has been more dominant, with less talent surrounding him. Long is the defensive player who I think has single-handedly influenced the outcome of games more than anyone else.

I agree on Long completely. Without him UVA is 3-9 this year instead of 9-3.

I haven't watch Chris Long enough to choose between the two, so I'll have to take your word for it.

Well, that and I've asked HtoM to weigh-in on the topic, as I'm sure he has seen more of CL than any of the rest of us.
I'll come back later with a little more due diligence and details on the topic....plus it's lunchtime right now.

But Long should have gotten the nod over Dorsey, for one main reason: UVA exclusively uses a 3-4 scheme which typically relies on linemen to eat up blockers and linebackers to make plays. Long makes the plays himself. 14 sacks - over one per game. Dorsey has six. Long has 19 TFL. Dorsey, 11.5. Long, 75 tackles, Dorsey, 64.

Long dominated Dorsey in the stat column despite being in a scheme that handicaps lineman stats.

And to add to JohnnyCockfight's post about being the difference-maker in games, a specific example. UVA beat Maryland 18-17. Long recorded a safety that game - AGAINST A DOUBLE-TEAM. He blew past one blocker, "disregarded" the next block (the words of Scouts, not my own) and flattened Chris Turner. Watching that play live (it was on ESPN, hallelujah), I remember seeing a good pocket for the QB, then boom, no pocket, safety.

Dorsey won those awards because he's playing for LSU. If he's on almost any other team in the country - even another SEC team like Tennessee - or if Long is playing for a more recognizable program - Long wins.

Yes, his play against Maryland was awesome.

This is a tidbit from his bio on the official UVA site:

DIRECT IMPACT on the ROAD:
? Long has had a direct impact in affecting the final score of Virginia's three road victories
? Intercepted a pass and returned it 25 yards to set up the game-winning field goal in a 22-20 win over North
Carolina on Sept. 15
? Blocked a field goal in UVa's 23-21 win over Middle Tennessee on Oct. 6
? Sacked Maryland's quarterback in the end zone for a safety in the third quarter in UVa's 18-17 win on Oct. 20

He basically saved UVA from two more embarassing losses against UNC and MTSU.

For those not familiar with UVA football, you may want to tune into the bowl game. UVA does not have a secondary, and Texas Tech doesn't do anything but throw, and throw quickly. They might score 100.

The problem that I have with Dorsey winning these awards is that he missed a lot of playing time this season especially near the end when they were playing "quality" opponents. I think a lot of this award-winning for Dorsey is based on his NFL draft stock.

He is a huge impact player on Saturdays, he is going to be a huge impact player on Sundays.

Yea I don't get it either. I looked up the stats and Dorsey had 64 tackles and 3 sacks. Laurinaitis had 103 tackles, 5 sacks, and 2 Ints. Considering that Dorsey was hurt, it must be well deserved.
LB stats not comparable to DL stats.
Besides which, by that token of stat count alone there were other LBs with glitzier tackle total, sack totals or INT totals this year than James pulled down - but that doesn't mean to you, or me, that he is a lesser LBer than than them.

I agree with this statement. I truly think that Dorsey is the most dominant player in college football. But when you miss 25% of your teams defensive snaps on the season, even if it is due to injury, then there is probably another player who is more deserving. If Dorsey wasn't on LSU's team does he win this award? I don't think there is any way.
