Buckeye Jeff See Named Co-Big Ten Cross Country Runner of the Week

Courtesy: OhioStateBuckeyes.com
Release: 09/04/2007

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Jeff See, a junior on the Ohio State cross country team, was named the co-Big Ten runner of the week Tuesday and shared the award with Penn State's Brian Fuller.

See, from Middletown, Ohio, led the Buckeyes to the team title at the Short Course Open Friday on the campus of Kent State as he took home the individual winning time of 15:14.5. It is a collegiate career best mark for See at on a 5-kilometer course.

"Jeff has really jumped up to another level," Robert Gary, Ohio State head coach, said. "After last spring and some great 1,500-meter and mile races and just missing the finals at USA's, he really is running with a great deal more confidence."

The award rounds out a solid summer for See as he became the first Buckeye to break the four minute mark in the mile, competing unattached June 2 during his redshirt season at the Music City Distance Classic.

The award is the first career runner of the week honor for See and the Buckeyes' first R.O.W. since Alex Bailey took home the honor Oct. 10, 2006, following the All-Ohio Championships. See is the eighth Big Ten R.O.W. the Buckeyes have claimed in the over the past four seasons - more than any other Big Ten team in that span.

Ohio State will take this week off and then head to Marysville, Tenn., for the Tennessee Twilight Invitational Sept. 14.

Taylor Candella (right) was eighth overall at the All-Ohio Friday.

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Ohio State's men?s cross country team took third among NCAA Division I teams Friday at the All-Ohio Championships in Delaware, Ohio. The Buckeyes posted the Top 3 showing despite not entering their Top 5 runners.

After a long road trip to Oregon last week, head coach Robert Gary decided to rest his Top 5 in the 90-degree heat. Gary also brought a majority of the track and field team to support.

?This is a big team-building exercise,? Gary, also in his second season as track and field head coach, said. ?We started doing this last season and it really brings the team closer together.?

Jeff See won All-Big Ten honors Sunday.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State men's cross country team placed third at the Big Ten Championships Sunday at The Ohio State University Golf Course. The Buckeyes have finished in the Top 3 at the conference meet in four of the last six seasons.

Ohio State finished behind Big Ten Champion No.6 Wisconsin (33) and No.22 Minnesota (65) and ahead of No. 10 Michigan, who finished fifth. The Buckeyes point total (91) was the teams lowest since finishing second at the championships in 2002.

Senior co-captain John Ealy earned second-team All-Big Ten honor with an 11th-place finish in a time of 24:08.22. Fellow senior and co-captain Alex Bailey grabbed second-team All-Big Ten honors as well with a 13th-place finish coming in with a time of 24:08.22. The last Buckeye to earn first-team all-league honors was Brian Olinger in 2004.

The Buckeyes will take a week off and then head to Bloomington, Ind., for the Great Lakes Regional Championships, Nov. 10.

I went to the meet Sunday and the Buckeyes ran superb... couldn't ask for anything more. Wisconsin won it going away (5 runners in the top 10) as was expected. Pretty good time differential from See to Balyo (less than 1:00) but if they want to make it to Nationals Candella and Balyo need to get their times closer to 24:00. As always, it was great to beat Michigan. :)

Hey, BKchmoc, thanks for keeping this thread going. As a former track and CC coach I love to see the Buckeye distance program moving up and gathering kids like Jeff See. Too many good CC programs in the state to not have a better program at OSU.
