Glad to hear it...I'll see if I can't snag you a brand new one next time around. Sorry I missed out on hanging out with the next Mrs. Rugbybuck. If you do come up for the Classic, try and bring some decent weather with you...the last two years have been brutal.

This weekend:

#6 Ohio State @ #18 Purdue

On Saturday, the B-side will be playing at Ohio Wesleyan. Then, on Sunday at 1:00 PM, our A-side will be playing Purdue in West Lafayette. While this game does not really count for anything, we desperately need a competitive game after steamrolling people in Savannah two weeks ago before getting steamrolled in Atlanta last weekend. Anyone in or around West Lafayette is welcome to stop by and support the rugby Bucks.

No need, it looks great with Ohio dirt on it. Melissa lasted exactly one half and then bugged out for coffee. She did meet Rooney, however, and threatened me with death if I agreed to kit up for the second match.

Well, the next Mrs. Rugby and I braved the wind and went to the tOSU v. Life U. rugby match on Saturday. Our boys kept playing and played tough, but it was almost as if the Life U. football team was playing the Buckeyes at Ohio Stadium. The score, I lost track after Life put up 50, may have been 100+ to 5. As a rugby fan it was great to watch. As a Buckeye, not so much, but I hope that our guys will take what they learned and apply it the rest of the college schedule. They (we) lost to one of the better men's teams in the country, certainly in the East. No shame in that. Good luck the rest of the season, Bucks!

RB, you got her to go to rugby in crap weather? Geez, there's a keeper!

Wanna know a definition of a shit day? Going through customs in Hong Kong to have a quick dinner with a friend and seeing everyone going to the Hong Kong Sevens, while you go back and hop onto your connecting flight. Happy to get home but geez, so bloody close!:(

On the good side, I had dinner at Chairman Mao's house and we rugby folk had a table to ourselves. It truly was a great evening. Sitting in Shanghai, talking about the Super 14 and Tri-Nations with Aussies, Kiwis, and a Brit. That's a conversation you wouldn't have heard when Mao was around, eh?

Sorry to hear about Life University. Where are they located and what can we do to pull their accreditation!

tough one Steve...a friend of mine was just there as well and although she had little to no interest in the HK 7's, she did say she thought about how much fun I would have had if I had the chance to go.

Life University, located in Marietta, GA was created as a chiropractic college. If I am not mistaken they now offer degrees in several healthcare fields. They have chiropractic, undergrad and master's programs available and they also field one of the most competitive (at least at the moment) men's sides in the country. Our wing and kicker is receiving strong consideration from Life as he prepares to find a team to play for next year.

On to better news...despite a game that was sloppy at best, we rebounded for a solid 36-12 win over Purdue yesterday. As for collegiate test matches this year, that now ties us with Cal and Army for the nation's longest winning streak at twelve in a row. The back three played especially well, with Doug Olson posting a couple of tries and wingers Andrew Kender and Nick Bell each adding one. Here is an article about the game:

Buckeyes down Boilermakers

By Brian Lowe

Los Angeles, CA – (April 2, 2006) – #6 Ohio State has begun tuning up for the national playoffs with a 36-12 win on the road Sunday against Purdue.

The Buckeyes outscored the Boilermakers six tries to two to post their 12th straight win dating back to early last fall, and in doing so, equaled the longest winning streak in the country. Both #1 Cal and #3 Army went twelve straight.

Purdue got on the board first when they made the most of tardy play by OSU. Ohio State was pressing the goal line early in the piece when they coughed up the ball and Purdue took it back the other way for the opening try of the game. It wasn’t until the end of the first quarter that OSU started to fire on all cylinders. The Buckeyes punched in two quick scores and never looked back. They led 17-7 at halftime.

Purdue was coming off a grinding 31-17 win against Indiana Saturday. Because both Purdue and Indiana had beaten Minnesota and lost to Ohio State last fall, under Midwest rules, a challenge match was allowed for in order to determine the #2 seed for the nationals.

Fullback Doug Olson led the way for OSU by scoring a brace of tries, while wingers Andrew Kender and Nick Bell, eightman Ryan Jewett and flanker Bubba Bleakmore all chimed in with singles.

“It was a hard game,” Ohio State head coach Tom Rooney told American Rugby News. “It was a bit sloppy because of the weather, but the basic skills were there. It’s difficult in the Midwest to come off our spring breaks and get into full swing for the playoffs.”

As a result of the weekend’s games Ohio State, which improved to 12-1 overall, will take the Midwest’s #1 seed into the championship brackets at West Point where they’ll square off against Dartmouth, while Purdue, now 4-5, will carry the Midwest’s #2 seed into pool play at Berkeley.

Next up for OSU is the Cherry Blossom tournament, and then a match against men’s club Scioto Valley the following week.

Life's core is made up of Saffas over here on student visas. I played sevens against them one year at Ft. Benning and they didn't speak a word of English the whole match.

Sounds like a great trip, Steve. Sorry you couldn't lay over for a day or so for the 7s. Keep us posted on RugbyFest down there next month. I'd love to come down to SA for that some time.

Latest Travelcorp poll has us moving up...

College rankings: PSU, OSU movin’ on up

336.jpg

By Brian Lowe

Los Angeles, CA – (April 4, 2006) – As we approach the business end of the college season, regional playoffs have begun, and in some cases have already been decided, and consequently there has been some movement, particularly in the top half of our updated rankings.

Penn State moves up following their victory over Navy in the Mid-Atlantic championship. At the same time, the Midshipmen climbed a spot at the expense of Dartmouth, a team that also finished second in their Conference, based on a better points differential. Another team going up is Ohio State. Even though they clinched the Midwest title last fall, they took on runners-up Purdue at the weekend and beat them to consolidate their position.

Because they’ve been idle, Utah made way for both PSU and OSU, but the Utes will compete at this weekend’s Pacific Coast playoffs and could regain some ground depending on how they go. That said, the season hangs in the balance for several other teams in the Pacific Conference including BYU, Washington State, Oregon State, UC Davis, St Mary’s, Oregon and Washington, and this weekend will either make or break their 2006 campaigns. UC Berkeley has already qualified for the Round of Sixteen by winning the Northern California League.

Further south, UC Santa Barbara has leapfrogged WSU following their unexpected victory over the New Zealand Institute of Sport and will be playing off against San Diego State this weekend for Southern California’s second seed. And over in the West, Wyoming, Colorado, Truman State, Oklahoma and Texas A&M among others will be vying for two seedings for the nationals, so there are no changes to their places this week. Other than that, it’s steady as she goes as we check in with the latest TravelCorp College Top 25.

1 [1] California (13-1)
2 [2] BYU (11-1)

Interesting bit of news for the other rugby fanatics (RB, you might want to hold off on that trip up for the classic)...We will be welcoming Dan Lyle to our practice tonight. He is in town surveying the facilities at tOSU as a potential host site for the North American 4 series. The NA4 will pit two Canadian teams and two American teams against each other in a Super 14-style tournament. It looks as though we have all but locked up tOSU as the host site for this function, which will be in late July. Lyle currently serves on the USA board, but prior to that he captained the US national team for several years. He also captained Bath in England for 7 years, leading them to a Heineken Cup title in '98. He will be spending the day touring Columbus and will be running our practice tonight.
