Ohio State, Navy form teams in Charlotte tourney

By Brian Lowe, San Francisco, CA – (February 19, 2006) – #4 Ohio State and #10 Navy proved to be the form teams at the Charlotte Presidents’ Day tournament with OSU beating Navy 15-14 in Sunday’s Final.

On Saturday, the Buckeyes topped Kutztown 27-10, while the Midshipmen downed the University of North Carolina 34-12.

It was the first time in ten years or so that Ohio State and Kutztown had met and it was a humdinger of a game. OSU, who started four freshmen and three sophomores, led narrowly 10-7 at the half. The play of the game came on the opening kickoff of the second half when OSU flanker Jewett fielded the ball and headed up field. He was leveled by a Kutztown player, who then emerged from the bottom of the ruck just as Ohio State’s All-American #8 Jake Legros took the ball off the side. Legros broke a tackle, cut back, and then got drilled by the same Kutztown player. The two big time back-to-back tackles on the same series brought a roar from the crowd.

Among the solid performers for OSU were second rower Eric Shulte, #8 Legros, inside center Phil Nightingale, and wing Nick Bell. Freshman who impressed included tighthead prop Mike Knabb, flanker Matt Altieri, scrumhalf Mickey Franco, and wing/center Tony Dieppa.

“Game was rusty, our lineouts were better, our penalties were down, but continuity is still missing,” Ohio State head coach Tom Rooney told American Rugby News. “Kutztown showed a good pattern and they were absolutely hard hitters. We didn’t put the game away until the last 15 minutes, but what the hey, it’s February and we are playing rugby. Pretty good for a bunch of snowbound Ohio guys.”

In the other main game, Navy dominated UNC and in so doing was able to give a lot of the reserves some much needed game time.

wadc45, first congrats on a great weekend...you guys definitely rock! As for Navy, you think they may actually move up a bit in the rankings with such a close loss to the #4 team? Are the rugby polls as ambiguous as football polls?

There are two major polls...the Goff poll and the Travelcorp poll. We were ranked #7 and Navy was #6 in the Goff poll so I expect us to move up there. In the Travelcorp poll we were ranked #4 and Navy was #10 and I don't expect any movement there. I would not be surprised to see us #5 in the Goff poll and #4 in the Travelcorp poll later this week. Both polls will have Army, Penn State and California ranked ahead of us, which I can't really argue with at this point. But Goff will likely also have Utah also ahead of us, which is purely a matter of opinion. I tend to think the Travelcorp polls are done much more objectively since they are done by a panel, whereas the Goff poll is more or less the opinion of one reporter. It's all pretty moot at this point considering our path to the Final Four has already been laid out and we are probably going to have to go through Dartmouth and Penn State to get there.

Anyone looking for something to do this evening is welcome to joing the OSU rugby team at CBR bar in the brewery district for a meet and greet social event. The cost is $10 with refreshments provided from 7-11PM. Myself, the rest of the staff and all of the upper classmen will be in attendence, so stop by if you are in the neighborhood...

Ohio State Wins in Charlotte

By Alex Goff

February 19, 2006 – Ohio State won the Charlotte President's Day Collegiate Tourney Sunday with a tight 15-14 victory over the U.S. Naval Academy.

"We love playing high-caliber teams," said OSU captain Phil Nightingale. "We have to travel down South to do it this time of year, but it's worth it. We love playing those guys at Navy. They're a good bunch of guys and it is always close."

And so it was this time around. Ohio State's forwards, led by All American No. 8 Jake Legros, kept Navy backpedaling with some hard-charging runs, while the Buckeyes pinned the Middies back in their end much of the time with some probing kicks.

"We were painting the corners pretty well on 'em," said Nightingale.

Legros and lock forward Mike Bubenik both scored tries to pace OSU and wing Andrew Kender added a conversion and a penalty goal.

Still it came down to the final seconds, and Navy had a few chances to win it, including just near then end of the game when they final penalty attempt sailed wide.

It was a game that Navy felt they had let slip through their fingers, and coach Tom Rooney acknowledged that the kicks seemed to go their way.

"I think we dodged some bullets," said Rooney.

Navy plays PAC men's club next weekend, while OSU next plays a month from now at the Savannah, Ga., St. Patrick's Day Tournament.

Surprisingly, we dropped two spots in the latest poll, despite the win against Navy. BYU has shot up the rankings which means they may be playing themselves out of our bracket at nationals. I would be hard pressed to argue that we are better than Cal, Army or Penn State right now, but I highly doubt any of the other teams in the top 10, with maybe the exception of Utah, could hand with us. Especially the bottom half...we would blow Tennessee, Clemson and Dartmouth right out of the water. Right now our bracket features Penn State, Dartmouth and us. We will be joined by the Pacific #4, which won't be determined until the weekend of April 7-8th.

College rankings: BYU big mover while Navy hits the skids

By Brian Lowe, Los Angeles, CA – (February 23, 2006) – There has been frenzied action in the collegiate ranks since our last update and consequently records have changed as teams have either won or lost, and as a result, BYU is the big mover in the latest TravelCorp College Top 25 rankings.

Brigham Young University has been on a roll since coming out of hibernation putting together an impressive series of victories over some decent opposition. In the last couple of weeks, the Cougars have put paid to the likes of Cal Poly and Colorado State, as well as shutting down an out-of-sorts UCLA. BYU’s run of Ws has seen them enjoy a meteoric rise on the depth charts and these guys have Final Four written all over them.

Going in the opposite direction is Navy, who dropped four spots after being edged by Ohio State at the Charlotte Presidents’ Day tournament. Since losing to Penn State in the fall, and then being beaten by Army in the fall classic, the Midshipmen haven’t been able to rediscover their winning form from earlier in the season.

Penn State drops a couple of notches because of BYU’s jump and because of Utah beating them at the Red Rock tournament, but the Nittany Lions stay ahead of the Buckeyes by virtue of their head-to-head victory over OSU early last fall. Other teams on the move upwards include Washington State, who’ve been impressing everyone, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara and St Mary’s. Stanford has fallen out of the rankings altogether after failing to win a game in their last few outings, while Texas A&M checks in for the first time, as does Long Beach State, after completing the mandatory three games that a team must play in order to be ranked. Now, having digested all that information, here is the latest TravelCorp College Top 25.

1 [1] Army (11-0)
2 [2] California (7-0)
3 [14] BYU (6-1)
4 [5] Utah (10-2)
5 [3] Penn State (10-2)
6 [4] Ohio State (11-1)
7 [6] Tennessee (9-0)
8 [7] Clemson (10-1)
9 [8] Dartmouth (9-3)
10 [9] Cal Poly (8-1)
11 [12] Washington State (7-1)
12 [17] UC Davis (6-2)
13 [19] UC Santa Barbara (6-2)
14 [10] Navy (6-4)
15 [22] St Mary’s (4-1)
16 [11] Oregon State (7-3)
17 [15] Truman State (6-1)
18 [16] Wyoming (5-2)
19 [13] Colorado (4-0)
20 [18] Oklahoma (7-3)
21 [20] Arizona (6-4)
22 [unranked] Texas A&M (3-0)
23 [25] Arizona State (4-3)
24 [21] Colorado State (3-5)
25 [unranked] Long Beach State (2-2)

nothing was give this team greater satisfaction than earning the right to play Penn State for a chance at the Final Four...

Actually, not true Wes! Kicking the living daylights out of Penn State and winning the national championship would be far more satisfying. So would a night with the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders but then, that was another era! :slappy:
