2006 Heisman Discussion (merged all)

A few thoughts...

- It seems as though Meyer doesn't believe Leak is the best QB on his team. That alone should eliminate him from consideration.

- Quinn threw 17 more times than TS yesterday for only an additional 41 yards. 2.x yards per passing attempt.

- Thank you Texas for preventing Peterson from going off in his most important game of the season.

- 85% completion rate is awesome.

I have to concur. If Florida's most electrifying plays are happening with ball in hand of Tebow there is no way in which Leak can overshadow Quinn, let alone Troy Smith. Probably he doesn't care about the Heisman hype (much in the same manner that Ginn Jr. is being the team player) valuing instead the "W" over the trip to NYC.
And we should officially consider Peterson's candidacy over. The Heisman voters do recall one thing, performances on nationally televised games. Particularly, they tend to give greater value to performances that cement a win over those that simply bolster the chances for a win in a losing effort. Not fair that last part, but history pretty much proves it out.

Troy's has not run much this year, but at least 2 runs that come immediately to mind were runs that picked up first downs on third and long. Yesterday's 34 yard run on third and 25 would have been a Heisman moment if it had been a bigger game.

Still, as was stated (by grad21) in the game thread, it'll look great on his Heisman Highlight Reel.

The Heisman race is almost an exact parallel to the NC race this year.

Maintain the next 5 weeks then have a great game vs scUM and its over.

I expect the media to try and build some drama over the 2nd half of the season while we are in the weak part of our schedule and build someone as a legit "comer". Probably will be Brady Quiff.

I don't believe Urban Meyer believes that at all. He knows Leak is his best QB right now, that's why he is playing. Don't think for one minute that Meyer would play his second best player at the most important position on the field. Coach Meyer will put his best 11 on the field.

Yes, Tebow is an electrifying player with mad skills. But he isn't ready yet and Meyer knows it. Leak is a seasoned veteran and a good QB.

When Tebow comes in, Meyer can talk things over with Leak without using a timeout. I'm surprised you guys haven't picked up on this. While Tebow is on the field, Meyer and Leak are scripting the next few plays. Tebow, right now is a stunt double.

Its genius.

It sounds like Meyer disagrees with you.

Said Meyer: "I want the ball in his [Tebow's] hands right now. I know he's going to hang onto it."
Would you feel that Smith was the undisputed QB of tOSU if Zwick came in and scored all of the TD's while JT was scripting the next few plays with TS on the sideline? I sure wouldn't.

Do you think Beanie is our best tailback because Pittman is on the sideline on third and one?

I belive that quote may have been referencing the running game only.

True it does means that he is best for that situation, and that, I believe, is the argument in relation to the Heisman race. If Leake is the QB, but not the best QB on his team in every situation (especially these recent scoring situations), then how can he be a Heisman (best overall player in all of college football) candidate?

When it boils down to it, if they aren't winning, the point is moot. Tebow is a better runner, so he comes in to run a few a QB draws and sweeps. Leak has played his fair share in goal to go situations this year, and even ran a sweet 40+ yard run against LSU (or was it Tennessee?). Point is, Leak is good. Meyer is grooming Tebow very strategically.

This is true. At any rate, I think it will be an interesting situation to watch and see how it develops--whether it is just planning for the future or something else.

Tonite Wolfe ran for about 170 on about 30 carries against 0 and 5 Miami. What does that do for him. I don't think it helps him. They also showed a graphic about, outside of Iowa, all of NIU's remaining games are against teams rated very low in run defense. And they claimed that to beat Sander's ncaa rushing record Wolfe has to average 208 per game. Which he didn't do tonight.
