2006 Buckeyes Forecast, Recruiting, and The Game (Merged)

He's not the 46th RB prospect, he's 46th overall. There are other players at other positions that are very good too. He is ranked number 8 overall out of the running backs and he is a very good player. In fact we think he could be an impact player, but he does not have the big play ability and make you miss qualities of other backs in this class.

Did Tom Laughingstock even watch Wells play against the best defensive players from the Western US? He both bowled over and ran around some of the very best high school defenders in the country. He was the game's MVP. I'd like to see this moron name the other seven running backs who are better than Wells.

Our Defense for Next Year

With the departure of many great players, including Green, Kudla, Hawk, Carpenter, Schlegel, Whitner, Youboty, Salley, and Everett, our defense is taking a significant hit in both talent and leadership. I have no doubt that we will rebound and come out strong for next year, I would just like to talk about who will fill in at what position, and your outlooks to what we will have for next year as we make a run at the NC.

I remember not so long ago being worried about Winfield leaving and Plummer and Doss and Nickey (ok, not so much about Nickey) and Allen and Fox... Folks, we are tOSU. There is much talent in the pipeline. I am not the least bit concerned about our DBs. Likewise with our linebackers. Wilhelm replaced Kat, Hawk replaced Grant, Carp replaced Reynolds... MDA, Freeman and COmpany will get it done. No question

If the first guys we put out there don't get it done, there is plenty of talent waiting for its shot at the field. Our guys up front will be good and will support our young DBs' development. I think a backfield of Jenkins, Amos, Welch, O'Neal, etc. will be outstanding and I'm looking forward to seeing new Silver Bullets in the making among the DBs and linebackers.

Go Bucks!

Lugginbill would have to do that on one finger.

This one ..

The ESPN recruiting ranking is a clear case of someone trying deperately to go head to head with existing recognized entities that are established - and to a greater extent than ESPN, respected in that field. And the tactic they have chosen is to be "different" the result is that they are wrong.

Let's talk defense. What's our lineup look like?

Linebacker has been beaten to death, but here's the tally anyway:

Laurinaitis - Started the bowl game. He'll be fine.
D'Andrea - Might have been the starter at MLB this year before injury.
Freeman - Many of us have claimed that he'd have started on any other B10 team

I'm okay with that. The drop-off won't be too bad. We go from the nation's best group to what should be still one of the best LB corps in the B10.

On DL, we need some players to move from the "potential" column to "arrived".

Pitcock returns to one DT spot, so that's solid. Then you've got a few guys -- Abdullah, Penton and Patterson, who've seen playing time at DT. Beyond that, there's Cotton, Denlinger and Garnier.

You'd have to think that Patterson will stay at DE, however. Beyond him, there's Richardson, Gholston, Barrow, Williams and Worthington. I think that someone can emerge from that group and do some damage to opposing QBs. We're going to miss Kudla a lot, though.

CB: Malcom Jenkins and...who's left? Andre Amos, unless a WR is converted. No clue about the two-deep...Ginn?

S: Mitchell and JamO. Again, another spot where there's just not a lot of depth returning. Sirjo Welch and Antonio Smith probably round out the two deep.

Youboty and Whitner leaving really puts a kink into the back four. We'd better pray for a healthy season for these guys.

Anyway, the overall picture isn't what I'd expected. We think first of the loss at LB, but the secondary losses are a whole lot deeper, and leave us with a whole lot less to work with. The DL will be roughly as good as it was this year. Green and Kudla played strong senior years, but everyone else in the rotation is back with another year of experience and conditioning under their belts.

In 2006, we're still not going to be a team that you want to run the ball on.

As far as passing D goes, Jenkins will be solid at one corner spot, and Mitchell has played well at nickel and waited his turn at FS. Senior safties have has a pretty good track record here, so I expect that he'll do well. More the issue in the back four is depth. If a starter goes down, things get tough fast.

Anyone feel like starting up the "will Ginn take reps at CB this spring" argument? It wouldn't shock me if he took a few just to be available as an emergency corner.

Of course, I haven't considered any incoming Freshmen in all of this. There are some solid kids in this class who have an opportunity to make the case for early playing time.

Let's talk defense. What's our lineup look like?

Mitchell has 2 or 3 starts under his belt. '04 when Salley went down with a stinger. He has played well and has the smarts to help make the reads and adjustments for the DB's. Jenkins also has a handful of starts (Everett stinger)

Our linebackers are also not all green. MDA had decent game experience before his latest rash of injuries, Kerr is a smart, seasoned player (adds needed depth) And James Laurinaitis has two games of "holy shit I'm out here" wide eyed lessons to fall back on.

Lawrence Wilson laid Quinn out a couple of times at the release. He will be a stud. DL has lots of depth.

So, in my assessment we have cause for concern in 2 new DBs (plus depth issues) and leadership / defensive adjustments from the LB's (slight depth concern here as well)

Shawn Lane was converted to tailback before the season started. But since we have Beanie coming in next year along with returners Wells, Haw and Pittman, I see Lane going back to corner to help out the depth there. And as for D-end although he's young Gholston freaks me out...I've got my fingers crossed on him being a BEAST. Just look at him:

On offense...Smith and maybe even Ginn (he's not a Senior, but he's gonna be a leader, and has 2 years experience)...but if it has to be a senior then maybe Datish.

On defense...Pitcock, and Patterson.

Ben Person is another guy that may be able to contribute to the OL next year.
Anyone know what position Person is practicing at? Last I remember there was talk of him replacing Mangold, but then Cordle was getting high praise at center. I thought he might be able to get some PT at LS, but Drew Norman will be back as a senior next year. Anyone know how Ben is progressing or if Xeniabuck still post anywhere? I was pumped when he committed a couple years ago.
