... but BOTH Texas lines and linebackers are fast and tough... and VY may be gone, but I don't think it's going to be Pee Wee Herman calling signals.

Texas loses four or more starters on both offense and defense. They will not be near what they were this past season. They went from Young at QB to either a red-shirt freshman or true freshman, which is like going from a Ferrari to a Toyota Tercel.

RECRUITING REPORT
Buckeyes seize backyard from Michigan

By D. ORLANDO LEDBETTER
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 01/20/06

In five years under Jim Tressel, Ohio State has won four showdowns with hated Michigan.

Now, the Buckeyes are winning battles with their Big Ten rival off the field, too.

Talent-rich northeast Ohio — where Michigan found Desmond Howard, Elvis Grbac and Ricky Powers — appears to belong to the Buckeyes again. Cleveland's Troy Smith and Ted Ginn Jr. starred on Ohio State's Tostitos Fiesta Bowl championship team this month, and Tressel & Co. are set to sign the area's top two prospects on Feb. 1 — Akron Garfield tailback Chris Wells and Cleveland Glenville defensive end Robert Rose.

"It is no longer an area of the country where [the Wolverines] hold sway like they once did," said Duane Long, Scout.com's Ohio analyst.

So the Wolverines have turned to the South to replenish their talent pool. In addition to Statesboro quarterback David Cone, Michigan has commitments from Heard County running back Carlos Brown, Destrehan (La.) cornerback Jai Eugene and Orlando Edgewater wide receiver Greg Matthews.

Brown was down to Georgia and South Carolina before Michigan closed strongly. Eugene was once considered a lock for LSU.

"Michigan had to find another talent base they could draw from consistently," Long said. "In recent years, it has been slim pickings in Ohio for Michigan."

Cone, 6 feet 6, fits the mold of Michigan quarterbacks.

"They've had a good run of quarterbacks of 6-5 or better," Statesboro coach Steve Pennington said.

Cone had offers from Ball State, Eastern Kentucky and Mississippi State when he committed to Michigan in September. He dazzled the Wolverines during their summer passing camp.

"They were impressed football-wise with his mechanics, his footwork as well as his throwing motion," Pennington said. "They like his maturity and I guess you would say h."

Nice work, JWins.

I'd guess that Olson and Schwartz are more likely to redshirt than Rose and Johnson, though.

Once we get past NLOID, I think it'll be time for our bookies to set up the 'Who redshirts?' wagers, so we can all speculate on that.

thanks guys, this was a combined effort between cbfan40 (in case you missed the nearly transparent text ). I really didn't like redshirting rose at all, tho he is a raw DE.
I think Mo Wells will be a better returner than Haw because of the jitterbug factor.
I'm not sure I like the idea of coverage team freaks (ie like how we use D'Andrea, and likely Gibson this year) hitting MoWells at full tilt. Give me a straight ahead burner, with the ability to shed a tackle or two... and I've got a great compliment to Mr. Ginn in the return game.

But you feel ok with them hitting Ginn at full tilt? The good thing about guys like Wells is they don't take a lot of clean shots. Haw on the other hand is fast, but isn't as quick so he is more likely to get hit harder.

I'm "not sure" I like the idea of that happening to Wells... as in I am not confident about using him until I see that his size is not a liability. Ginn is not that big, but I do not remember ever seeing Ginn visibly shaken after a big hit nor lose possession of the ball as a result (it's fielding the ball that is his downfall).

I agree MoW probably can juke well enough to yield only glancing blows. Plus, after a year in the S&C program, who knows how he will look in a year. You make a good case for Wells.

I'd take Haw. Having watched both of them in the backfield last year, Haw is just as explosive and fast, and has far more power. Wells scoots around too much...Haw attacks the first opening he sees, and appears to have better vision which is crucial in rapidly-developing kick returns.

2006 Ohio State football season

How about next years schedule? looks pretty fun. OSU should have some big threats. AJ, Bobby, and Anthony are all leaving. Will that give the Bucks a threat? We have some good LBs coming up. James Laurinaitis and Marcus Freeman. We should have a good season next year.
