In the midst of hoops season, football still a hot topic

Columbus- The 18,500 basketball fans who took in Sunday's loss to Michigan State also witnessed the official unveiling of the 2006 football team, even if it was just three guys in sweat shirts.
If the torch wasn't officially passed, the microphone was, as coach Jim Tressel accepted the Fiesta Bowl trophy at midcourt with three faces of next year's team - defensive lineman David Patterson, receiver Ted Ginn Jr. and quarterback Troy Smith. Handed the microphone, Smith led a brief "O-H-I-O" cheer in front of a basketball crowd eagerly anticipating next fall.
If the Buckeyes looked a bit odd to fans without A.J. Hawk and Santonio Holmes front and center, Smith, Ginn and Patterson looked comfortable as the next class of leaders.
"You grow up with these guys and they leave," Smith said, "and then it's your time to step up."
"We lost a lot, but we've got some young guys who can come in and fill their shoes," Ginn said. "I believe that we asserted ourselves last year as leaders playing hard every down."
The loss of 10 senior starters - seven on defense - deepened when juniors Holmes, Ashton Youboty and Donte Whitner left for the NFL.
Asked if losing nine defensive starters was a lot, Tressel's eyes widened.
"That is a lot. When you have good players who are motivated students, that happens, and we have to replace them," Tressel said, pointing out that both Whitner and Youboty arrived on campus early and academically were only one quarter behind this senior class.
Those two would have been the veterans on what will be a young defense.
"They could have been good leaders," Tressel said. "But we've got some guys who can be leaders," as he rattled off the names of Patterson, Quinn Pitcock, Jay Richardson, Mike D'Andrea, Marcus Freeman and Brandon Mitchell.
Tressel said both Whitner and Youboty were classified by NFL experts as expected to go in the second or third round.
"I just hope they can be drafted where I think ultimately they should be," Tressel said. "Our goal is always to be a first-round guy - we want to be the top of whatever we're doing. I hope they have a great combine; that's really going to be the key with Donte and Ashton."
Some national experts are already placing Ohio State at or near the top of their very early preseason ratings. And Smith is gaining mention as a Heisman candidate.
Asked about those Heisman prospects as the crowd, for now, turned back to basketball, Smith, hands in his pockets, just smiled.
"Leave that for the papers," he said.
