2006 Buckeyes Forecast, Recruiting, and The Game (Merged)

I agree putting some of the negative things in the rear view mirror has helped. I think gaining experience of how to recruit at this level has something to do with it. Development of a history of JT's recruits getting good grades and being drafted in the NFL has helped as well.

It's been discussed that winning one game or wining a championship is not going to give a program a huge long term bump. Winning BCS bowl games year after year and a great record against Michigan I believe has a collective positive effect in Big ten country. We are now pulling recruits we want from Pa. In. Mi. Mn

The mods may want to split this thread.

I have to give Heacock and the "D' staff enormous credit for being innovative and seeing the need for a better pass rush. Moving Carp down was "Brilliant!"

I see Heacock doing something similar next season to cover deficiencies in the back 7. If he can pull it, a great pass rush, off a second time, next years team will be very hard to beat.

I agree, I actually like Heacock the most out of Coach D, and Snyder.

Ok with 96 days left till the spring game I am already getting anxious.

I want to know who everyone picks to have a breakout year this year.

I am going to go with D'Andrea or Mitchell. It seems like Seniors always step up under Tress so those are my two.

I thought it was pretty awesome that david patterson was out there (at the bball halftime presentation of the fiesta bowl trophy) representing the team along with troy and ted, and no one else. He came on strong at the
end of the season, and must have done something impressive to be out there.

Nevada still says Amos should be a great one, and that they are expecting a lot of coleman. Man, if whitner had come back, our secondary might have even taken a step forward this year. Either way, it will be good by the michigan game if the hype is true.

Not to get too far off-topic here, but I think Tressel has really improved as a recruiter this year. Not saying that he ever wasnt a good recruiter, but this year it seems he has definantly improved.

The guy's been recruiting for 20+ years...he didn't magically "improve" this year. We can't be in the top 5 recruiting classes every single year. Yeah, we may have gotten a few more "high on the wish list" players than the last year or two, but he's always been a solid recruiter (remember, we had the #2 class in 2002).

So Who Do We Want that is Left?

Coming down the stretch run and things have been fast and furious. I am lost trying to figure this all out. So I ask you this. If we assume for a second we are going to take 21, who do we want that is left?

Commits (16): Browning (OL), Smith (OL), Ballard (TE), Miller (TE), Henton (QB), Wells (RB), Chichester (WR), Rose (DL), Dublin (DL), Larimore (DL), Johnson (LB), Homan (LB), Moeller (LB), Schwartz (DB), Coleman (DB), Chekwa (DB)

90% sure (2): Small (WR), Gibson (LB if he gets grades), Gant (supposedly verballed today but not seeing confirmation

So who do we want that we are in on at this point, since we probably only have room for 3-5 more. I have heard names like Robinson, Bowman, McDaniel, Udell. Who else am I missing? Who do we still want that we are in on at this point? Seems like we have gotten a bunch of guys we wanted very fast so not sure what is left.

Thanks in advance for clearing me up

OHIO STATE

In the midst of hoops season, football still a hot topic

Tuesday, January 17, 2006 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- The 18,500 basketball fans who took in Sunday's loss to Michigan State also witnessed the official unveiling of the 2006 football team, even if it was just three guys in sweat shirts.
If the torch wasn't officially passed, the microphone was, as coach Jim Tressel accepted the Fiesta Bowl trophy at midcourt with three faces of next year's team - defensive lineman David Patterson, receiver Ted Ginn Jr. and quarterback Troy Smith. Handed the microphone, Smith led a brief "O-H-I-O" cheer in front of a basketball crowd eagerly anticipating next fall.
If the Buckeyes looked a bit odd to fans without A.J. Hawk and Santonio Holmes front and center, Smith, Ginn and Patterson looked comfortable as the next class of leaders.
"You grow up with these guys and they leave," Smith said, "and then it's your time to step up."
"We lost a lot, but we've got some young guys who can come in and fill their shoes," Ginn said. "I believe that we asserted ourselves last year as leaders playing hard every down."
The loss of 10 senior starters - seven on defense - deepened when juniors Holmes, Ashton Youboty and Donte Whitner left for the NFL.
Asked if losing nine defensive starters was a lot, Tressel's eyes widened.
"That is a lot. When you have good players who are motivated students, that happens, and we have to replace them," Tressel said, pointing out that both Whitner and Youboty arrived on campus early and academically were only one quarter behind this senior class.
Those two would have been the veterans on what will be a young defense.
"They could have been good leaders," Tressel said. "But we've got some guys who can be leaders," as he rattled off the names of Patterson, Quinn Pitcock, Jay Richardson, Mike D'Andrea, Marcus Freeman and Brandon Mitchell.
Tressel said both Whitner and Youboty were classified by NFL experts as expected to go in the second or third round.
"I just hope they can be drafted where I think ultimately they should be," Tressel said. "Our goal is always to be a first-round guy - we want to be the top of whatever we're doing. I hope they have a great combine; that's really going to be the key with Donte and Ashton."
Some national experts are already placing Ohio State at or near the top of their very early preseason ratings. And Smith is gaining mention as a Heisman candidate.
Asked about those Heisman prospects as the crowd, for now, turned back to basketball, Smith, hands in his pockets, just smiled.
"Leave that for the papers," he said.
