HERSHEY, Pa. (AP) — Dave Williams caught touchdown passes from three different players to lead Pennsylvania to a come-from-behind 61-42 victory over Ohio in the 49 th Big 33 Football Classic last night.
Williams had two receptions in the opposite corners of the end zone during a four-touchdown Pennsylvania streak in the third quarter. Pennsylvania used three Ohio turnovers to rally from a 28-14 deficit.
Williams pulled in a 25-yard pass from Pat Devlin in the left corner of the end zone, one play after Greg Webster’s fumble recovery. The score was the second in 20 seconds for Pennsylvania, but Ohio still led 28-27 after a missed extra point attempt.
Elijah Fields intercepted a pass three plays later, allowing Williams, chosen Pennsylvania’s most valuable player, to score twice in a span of 2 minutes, 9 seconds. Da’Rel Scott’s halfback pass found Williams in the right corner for a 32-yard touchdown and a 33-28 Pennsylvania lead.
Clem Johnson’s interception led to a 13-yard touchdown run by Devlin with nine seconds left in the quarter. Pennsylvania extended the streak to 40 straight points before Ohio added two late touchdowns in the highest-scoring game in the history of the series.
Connor Dixon, who is headed to Michigan State along with Williams, got the comeback started on a 56-yard option keeper. Scott scored two fourthquarter touchdowns.
Williams, a 5-foot-9, 165-pound receiver, totaled 95 yards on three touchdown receptions. Dixon completed 5 of 8 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 44 yards.
Ohio kicked off but managed to score just 57 seconds into the game. Kyle Endicott of Olentangy Liberty returned an interception 35 yards on the second Pennsylvania play. Delone Carter then ran 21 yards for a touchdown on Ohio’s first play from scrimmage.
Pennsylvania fell behind 10-0 when it failed to produce a first down on its first five possessions. Devlin, a Penn State recruit, threw interceptions on two of the first four offensive plays.
Ohio added to a 20-14 lead by scoring after the second-half kickoff. Derrell Johnson ran 41 yards on a quarterback keeper. Johnson, a Youngstown Cardinal Mooney graduate who originally was expected to play receiver in the game, rushed for 143 yards. He was named MVP for Ohio. Carter, a Syracuse recruit from Copley, ran for 194 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries for Ohio.

The officiaiting was awful. PA's A team still would have beat Ohio's C team even with better officiating, don't get me wrong, but there was 1TD that should have been called back due to a hold (And it was pretty obvious) on Dixon's long TD run in the 3Q.

The INT at midfield... clearly interference.

Just to name a couple.

But, like I said, I don't think that putting Pa. back at the Ohio 40 or so on Dixon's run would have meant they wouldn't have scored on the very next play.

The last 4 minutes of the game was some sloppy play, if you ask me.

By the time I turned the game on, they were running plays away from where ever Gibson lined up. I didn't see all of the 1st Q and most of the 2nd. Did they EVER try Gibson's side?

Gibson's meltdown is troubling to me...the game is emotional, but for the incident to carry on over an entire series and then onto the sidelines shows me that Thad has some growing up to do in Columbus. Im not concerned knowing that JT will have a tight leash on him, but the incident was disappointing.

This from the recap on the-ozone.net is telling I think

The Refs (PA) - When you watch the Big 33 game, you have to remember that the refs will make their mark at some point. This game was no different, as there was a no-call on a blatant Pennsylvania pass interference that resulted in an interception, and various personal fouls/unsportsmanlike conduct penalties on Ohio only. Of course the refs didn't decide the game, it just needed to be noted that it was business as usual once the second half began.

Big 33 sticks with Ohio
Wednesday, June 28, 2006
BY MICHAEL BULLOCK
For The Patriot-News

Well, the Big 33 Football Classic's executive board finally has spoken.

Pennsylvania's opponent in next year's game, the 50th anniversary of a long-running series that began in 1957, will be ... Ohio.

During its meeting yesterday, Big 33's executive board voted to extend its relationship with Ohio for one year, an arrangement that sets the matchup for the June 16, 2007, game scheduled for Hersheypark Stadium. Big 33 executive director Mickey Minnich said the vote to retain Ohio "was close to unanimous."

Big 33's vote to retain Ohio came on the heels of Saturday's decision by the Pennsylvania State Football Coaches Association, one that favored Pennsylvania maintaining its relationship with the Buckeye State.

That 14-year relationship nearly was severed since Ohio's popular North-South game was contested in Columbus on the same date (June 17) as this year's Big 33, a 61-42 shootout claimed by Pennsylvania. Minnich and many others in the Pennsylvania camp believed Ohio didn't field its best roster.

Hence, a debate raged that might have resulted in Pennsylvania opting to resume a series with Maryland instead of maintaining its relationship with Ohio. Pennsylvania and Maryland played from 1985-92.

Yesterday, that debate ended -- for at least 12 months.

"I think the big thing was their incoming president [Steve Channell]," Minnich said, referring to the head of Ohio's Football Coaches Association.

"He pretty much said, 'Look, give me the opportunity to work with our association and our selection process,' and he would almost guarantee the best 34 players from Ohio would come down to Pennsylvania next year. We have confidence in him. He's also working to get the North-South game changed."

While Channell would not address specifics surrounding the 2007 North-South game -- speculation has Ohio altering the date, even holding its intrastate contest on the same spring weekend as Ohio State's Scarlet-Gray game -- he was pleased to hear that Pennsylvania wants to keep playing Ohio.

"We're very thrilled that our relationship with Pennsylvania is going to continue," said Channell, who piloted Ohio to a 34-28 victory in the 2005 Big 33. "We're looking forward to celebrating the 50th anniversary of the game with Pennsylvania next year.

"We're looking to make things better. We continue to evaluate our association and how things are being done, and we're looking to make improvements in all areas."

That's positive news for Pennsylvania.

Although resuming a series with Maryland was an option that Minnich said was seriously discussed and even favored by some board members, ultimately the decision was to continue playing Ohio. Following the vote, Minnich said he informed Maryland of Pennsylvania's decision.

One advantage to remaining with Ohio is the ability to maintain ongoing corporate relationships with sponsors such as Waste Management, Sprint and PNC Bank.

"What's a better matchup than Pennsylvania-Ohio?" said Minnich, who added that a three-year contract with Ohio would have been preferred. "The present series is tied 7-7. Everything's positive."

"Both states have a great history of high school football," Channell said. "Like I said earlier, I'm glad we'll be able to get together and continue the series."

Holy s**t!
I knew that I knew that guy in the pictures!
I went to the same HS as Steve Channel. (he was a few years ahead of me) I saw the pics of the game but said, naw, that can't be him. But damned if it ain't.

Hope he can get the games on different dates. heck, all they really need to do is split up the 3 Ohio teams more evenly, and both games would be very competitive.
